7. ACADEMIC PARTICIPATION :
a. Teaching – Taught English Linguistics and Literature at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in various Institutions including Pune University Department of English for 32 years. Presently teaching Pragmatics and research methodology at M.A. and M. Phil levels in the Institute of Advanced Studies in English, Pune. As a teacher developed some innovative teaching techniques and unconventional learning teaching material and participated in evaluation, examination reforms and syllabus designing at the college, university and state level. Earned the reputation of an innovative and dedicated teacher with a large number of successful students working in good positions within and outside India.
b. Seminars and Conferences – Participated as a Resource Person, Chairman of Sessions, Panelist or as the Chief Guest for Inaugural or Valedictory functions of more than 350 University/State level, 103 National level and 28 International level Seminars/Conferences on different areas in English Language and Literature.
Organized four International, three National, two State and ten University level seminars/conferences (Annexure I). Unique organizer in India of national and international conferences in the area of humanities.
c. Speeches and Presentations – International Level: Made twenty Presentations/Speeches as Resource Person, Panelist or Chairperson in International Conferences. Made eight Speeches in different universities in Thailand and South Korea as invited speaker. (Annexure I)
National Level: Gave more than 300 Keynote, Inaugural or Valedictory Addresses at International, National and State Level Seminars/ Conferences organised in different universities in India. As a Resource Person for UGC Sponsored Refresher and Orientation Courses, addressed senior college teachers in more than 350 sessions in different universities in India. Made over 30 Presentations on different aspects of Higher Education on prestigious occasions like Executive Development Programs for Principals, Centenary, Diamond or Silver Jubilee Celebrations of academic institutions, Memorial Lecture Series and similar important academic occasions.
The main topics of speeches/ presentations are: Digital humanities, Pragmatics; Teaching English in India; Teaching and Reading Literature; Doing Research; Syllabus Designing and Materials Production; Language and Society; Language, Technology and Culture; Role of Teacher in the 21st Century and; Higher Education.
d. Syllabus Designing – As the chairman, Board of Studies in English (1995 –2000 and from 2005-2010) and Linguistics (2000–2005) in the University of Pune, played the central role in rationalizing the syllabi of English from the first year

B.A. to M. Phil. in English. Known all over Maharashtra as ‘Pune Pattern’, different universities have been trying to emulate this pattern. Several Ph D and M Phil students have done or are doing research on these experiments. Participated in designing the syllabi of several Certificate and Degree Courses in Pune University like the six-month Certificate Course in Environmental Awareness, Certificate Course in Communication for Teachers and Bachelors of Education (English) (An Innovative Program). In addition to these Pune University courses, designed and implemented more than 10 need-based courses in English including Teacher Enrichment Program for schoolteachers teaching English in Pune Municipal Corporation schools. Made major contribution in designing syllabi and producing materials for UG and PG Courses in English in Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University, Nasik, Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University, North Maharashtra University Jalgaon, Shivaji University Kolhapur, Solapur University, Solapur and Mumbai University, Mumbai.
8. RESEARCH, PUBLICATIONS AND MATERIALS PRODUCTION :
a. Research – Carried out doctoral research for four years on Pragmatics, the latest development in linguistics. The thesis was published by Macmillan Publishers and ran into three editions. CUP is now publishing the revised fourth edition. Completed two UGC sponsored Research Projects on Nativisation of English in India and Stylistics, respectively.
b. Research Guidance – Successfully guided Thirty Three Ph. D. students in English and eight students are working for Ph. D. These students represent different nationalities and their topics range from Pragmatics to Natural Language Processing. Successfully guided Thirty Three M Phil students in English. Most of these Ph. D. and M. Phil. Students are working in coveted positions within and outside India. (Annexure II)
c. Publications – Authored, Co-authored or Edited six textbooks and seven
reference books. The reference book on ‘Discourse Analysis’ is a unique book written by an Indian author and has been widely referred to by research scholars within and outside India. Prof. Jacob Mey, Professor Emeritus of Linguistics and the leading Pragmaticist has written an introduction to the fourth edition being published by the CUP. Thirty-nine research papers have been published in Journals (national & international) and reputed books (Annexure IV). Working as the Chief Editor (also Founder editor) of widely circulated and reputed journals titled ‘Asian Journal of Contemporary Issues’ and Asian Journal of English Studies. The first Journal has recently completed twelve years.
d. Materials Production – Wrote six textbooks of English, which are prescribed in about eight universities in India including Pune University. Wrote seven reference books, three of them, i.e. ‘Discourse Analysis’, ‘Spectrum of Criticism’ and ‘Research Methodology’ which have been prescribed in various universities run into the third edition each. Produced an Interactive Course in English for

beginners in the form of six CDs and twenty-four cassettes, which are being distributed in different countries in Asia and Africa by Acoustic Engineers, Pune. Edited two books as a part of the Self-Instructional Material produced by Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University, Nashik. The book entitled ‘Towards Better English’, specially designed for Teacher Training Programmes is in the print.
9. ADMINISTRATIVE PROFILE :
a. Contribution as a Principal – Worked as Principal for Nineteen years, initially of Shri Shahu College, Pune and now of the Institute of Advanced Studies in English (Affiliated College). As the Principal of Shahu College, secured substantial development and research grants from various sources including the UGC. Established well equipped Computer, Geography, Psychology and Language Laboratories. Started new courses like B.C.S., M. A. English & Economics, Geography and Psychology Special, Vocational Courses like Functional English and Computer Applications. Successfully completed the procedure of assessment and earned B++ Grade of NAAC for the college. Introduced several innovative courses, programs and administrative policies. By bringing in automation, transparency and professionalism changed the work culture of the college, which helped the college build an unprecedented image.
As the founder of the Institute of Advanced Studies in English, Dr Thorat has been successfully playing a pioneering role in the field of self-financed education. Under his leadership, the Institute has emerged into a source of inspiration for English teachers all over India and a favorite academic destination for students from various countries. The alumni are successfully working in different parts of India and in more than twenty countries. In a short span from its inception the institute has emerged as a leading research institute in English in the Asian continent. It is the only institute in English in India regularly organizing National and International conferences and workshops in the emerging areas in the humanities.
b. Contribution as the Dean – Performed the central role in rationalizing syllabi of
different subjects and in instituting degrees like Ph. D. in Music, Dance, Drama and Painting. Played a pioneering role in textbook production in different subjects and in introducing innovative courses like B. Ed. (English), M.A. (Buddhist Studies) and M.A. (Sanskrit Linguistics and Epistemology). Played the major supportive role in establishing the Department of Performing Arts in the University of Pune and in the establishment of B. V. College of Fine Arts, the first College of Fine Arts affiliated to the University of Pune. Drafted the widely discussed, researcher friendly and quality oriented rules governing the processes from registration to the award of the Ph. D. degree in Pune University and introduced courses in effective communication for the administrative staff of the university. Worked as Chairman or member on almost all the important bodies and committees of the University of Pune like the Senate, Academic Council,

BCUD, BOE, Extra-Mural Board, Student Welfare Board, Library Committee, Publications Grant Committee, Research Stipend Committee, Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma Gold Medal Committee, Committee for Chancellor P. C. Alexander Elocution Competitions, State Level Best Teacher Award Committee, Standing Committee for Reservation Cell, Lapses Committee, Unfair means Committee, Foreign Student Advisory Committee, EDUSAT Committee, Admissions Committee, Eligibility Committee, various Research & Recognition Committees and many more. As a result of a long duration (11 yrs) and academic and administrative contribution of a high quality, is known as one of the most successful Deans of the University of Pune.
c. Contribution as the Director, IASE – Established the Institute of Advanced Studies in English (IASE) at Aundh, Pune. It is the only Institute of its kind solely engaged in the post-graduate studies and research in English. As the Founder Director of the Institute, introduced innovative managerial practices, maximum automation and an effective system of teaching. IASE is the only Institute regularly organizing International Conferences in the field of humanities. Within the twelve years of its existence, the Institute has emerged into one of the biggest research Institutes in India attracting students at the national and international levels. Developed links with colleges all over Maharashtra by way of promoting and providing concrete help in organizing conferences, teacher training programs, various need-based courses, designing syllabi and teaching modules. The Institute has been collaborating with several reputed Institutes within and outside India like US Education Institute South Korea, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune, Pune Municipal Corporation and several colleges in Maharashtra.
As a result of highly innovative and challenging programs undertaken by the Institute, the academically fruitful relations/collaborations, and sound student-teacher relations as well as student-friendly administration, the Institute has emerged as a favorite academic destination of students from within and outside India. The Institute has maintained an excellent tradition of examination results at M A, M Phil and Ph D levels. The students pass out with good grades and 90% pass outs of the Institute are well placed and feel proud of their association with the Institute.
d. Contribution as the Director, CDH – Played a key role, along with Dhanashree Thorat - Ph. D. student at UF, USA- in founding the Center for Digital Humanities, Pune. Meticulously developed the concept and structure of the center. Organized the first-ever Workshop on Digital Humanities in India in December 2013. Persistently endeavoring to develop awareness about nature, development and methodologies of DH among the humanities scholars all over India through interactions, lectures, and formal/informal collaborations. Reorienting the research in humanities through the Institute of Advanced Studies in English, Pune by enabling researchers to focus on the intersection of humanities with digital technology. The first ever Winter School in Digital Humanities organized in India by the center was fruitfully concluded on

December 20, 2014 in Pune. The school has helped envision several DH projects and to enlarge the DH network in India. The Certificate Course in Digital Humanities designed by the Center has been approved and instituted in the Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune. It is also under the active consideration of Deccan College Deemed University, Pune and Shivaji University, Kolhapur.
10. EXTENSION WORK :
Apart from regularly delivering speeches on a wide range of subjects ranging from higher education to the role of communication in fostering peace and harmony, designed and implemented a few novel programs in different schools and colleges. The most effective and noticed was the Teacher Enrichment Program. Specially designed for schoolteachers teaching English in Marathi Medium Schools, the program was initially implemented in the schools managed by the Pune Municipal Corporation. Over 2400 teachers in PMC schools were trained under this program. Subsequently it was implemented in different places like Shirpur, Dist. Dhule, Solapur, Amravati and Majalgaon, Dist. Beed. Organised a program for the development of communication skills in English for jailors from Maharashtra from 20 February to 20 June 2008. Has been regularly participating as a resource person in the officers’ training programs organized by the NABARD and the Reserve Bank of India. Designed and implemented one-semester course in communication skills in English for IISER students in Pune for two years in 2006-7 and 2007-8.
Organized four Workshops on NET/SET, a Special Training Program in Communication Skills in English for Section Officers in the Finance and Accounts Department of Pune University in July-August 2001, and an Intensive Orientation Program for Pune University Officers from 20 December 2001 to 19 March 2002.

13. NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS :
Known as the pioneer of Indian Pragmatics as a result of the seminal work done in this field in the form of valuable research work (including guidance) and publications and organization of national and international conferences in Pragmatics.
Established a self-financed Research Institute named Institute of Advanced Studies in English (www.iasepune.org) imparting instruction/ guidance for the courses of M. A., M. Phil. and Ph. D. in English of the University of Pune. Within a short span of three years of its existence, the Institute enjoys the status of one of the biggest Research Institutes in English in India with over 225 successful research students representing more than 18 nationalities.

Established the Center for Digital humanities, Pune (www.cdhpune.com) that aims at networking DH scholars in India and at developing DH projects and DH scholarship by providing awareness, methodology, know-how in DH tools and partial funding. The Certificate Course in DH proposed by the Center has been instituted by the SPP University, Pune from the year 2015-16.
Enjoyed the rare privilege of holding the position of the Dean, Faculty of Arts & Fine Arts, University of Pune for 11 years (1995-2005) Elected unanimously, enjoyed the full trust and confidence of the entire faculty. Also worked as the Chairman, BOS for 18 years. Introduced several courses, reforms, innovations and practices that are still upheld as excellent quality steps.
Member Pune University Senate for 20 years, Academic Council for 18 years and Chairman, Board of studies for 15 years.
Worked with eight Vice-Chancellors as Chairman or Member of various important committees in the University of Pune, won their confidence and appreciation. Most of these Vice-Chancellors are internationally known scientists.
Drafted the widely discussed and recognized Ph. D. Rules and the Perspective Plan (2002-2007) of the University of Pune. The new Ph. D. rules are looked at as a new leaf in the field of research at the university level.
Substantial contribution in the Master Plan for Pune University from 2002-07 and then Vision Document for twenty years from 2007 onwards.
Gave more than 350 speeches in UGC Refresher and Orientation Programs, more than 200 Keynote or Inaugural Addresses in State/National/International Conferences.
Launched two International Journals titled ‘Asian Quarterly’ and ‘Asian Journal of English Studies’. The journals have earned high reputation and are being distributed in about eight countries.
Appointed as a Special Expert by the University Grants Commission of India for the assessment of proposals of research projects and conferences/seminars received in the Western and South Regional Centers covering the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry.
