Task: You will be tasked with writing a 5 paragraph essay about one of the following topics – political assassinations (JFK, MLK jr, Lincoln), slavery, or the events of 9/11/2001. You have participated in a 2 week integrated unit, and you have learned about all of these previously mentioned topics. Hopefully, you took and kept your notes as instructed because they will be of great use for this assignment. This assignment has a twist. You are to select a writing format – expository, informative, or persuasive. Here’s the twist, you will have the power to change history as you see fit, but you must include in your paper the ramifications/consequences (if any) of your actions (you must address these consequences in 1 of your 3 body paragraphs!!!). When the time to write your final draft comes, it must include 1) A brainstorm using a graphic devices to explore your ideas (clusters, idea trees, observation and charts) OR one of the graphic devices that we used to (Idea-and-Details Charts, Story Maps, Classification Frame, Compare-and-Contrast Charts, and Venn Diagram) 2) A Rough Draft that includes the use of COPS Strategy to revise your work 3) A Final Copy of your Essay… Below are specific instructions as well as guidelines [ASK QUESTIONS!!!]

GUIDELINES (requirements for assignment):

A minimum of 5 paragraphs

Assignment can be written or typed. If written, needs to be legible as well as in ink (black or blue). If typed, use 12pt Times New Roman font, double spaced, 1 inch margins, proper headings.

Use of proper grammar (use COPS strategy to correct your work)

You must choose a writing format (informative, expository, or persuasive)

If you select informative, include the 5 W’s. If you select expository, use compare/contrast or a cause & effect angle to investigate. If you select persuasive, persuade us as to why you changed history.

Your essay must include an introduction paragraph, 3 body paragraphs, and a conclusion (5 paragraphs)

One of your body paragraphs MUST address the ramifications/consequences of your choice, so choose wisely! *Remember when you changed one thing, eeeeverything changes* (be creative)

Turn in the following: brainstorming, rough draft, and final draft

Grading Rubric will be used to grade assignment (see in class example)
