Breaking Open The WordSeptember 8, 2019

Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary TimeFirst Reading: Wisdom 9:13-18bThis reading acknowledges that people have had a difficult time attempting to know God’s wishes. At times we have difficulty understanding the things that happen on earth. Therefore, learning of things in heaven would have been impossible, except that God sent us wisdom and the Holy Spirit to help us understand Him.Second Reading: Philemon 9-10, 12-17Paul writes to Philemon regarding Onesimus, a slave who ran away and encountered Paul. Although Paul wished Onesimus could remain with him, he did not want to violate Philemon’s wishes. Paul asks that Philemon receives his friend Onesimus as a beloved brother, not as a slave. He closes by saying, “Welcome him as you would me.”Gospel: Luke 14:25-33Jesus warns people who wish to follow Him that they must abandon everyone else first. A person calculates the amount of money needed to complete a project before they begin it. In the same way, Jesus warns these people to consider exactly what is involved before they make a commitment to follow Him. Consider and ReflectPope Francis notes in Evangelii Gaudium that listening will always challenge us and call us to change ways of thinking, living, and viewing the world. St. Francis de Sales counsels that hearing God’s voice requires making time to pray with the scriptures, reflect on the liturgy, and study Church teaching. And we need to reflect on personal and communal life events, at home and afar, whether they comfort or challenge us. When we turn an ear to all these sources, we can meet God in that intersection between teaching and life. There we discover what is useful and what is not, where God is present and where God is not. There we can find God and God can find us. There we can glimpse the minds of God

and deepen our relationship with Jesus, who shows us God’s face. Take time to listen each day.

HEARING LOOP SYSTEM

For those of us living with hearing loss, it is often difficult to understand the words spoken during Mass due to the challenging acoustical listening environment. In an effort to improve clarity and understanding, we have received a donation and installed an induction loop listening system. To benefit from this system, you will need to select a seat in the 2 sections of pews (when facing the Altar), to the left of the Baptismal Font and switch your hearing aid, cochlear implant or other

“LIVING THROUGH GRIEF”SUPPORT GROUP

TuesdaysBeginning October 8, 2019

3:00 PM - 4:30 PMSt. Theresa Faith Formation Center

Facilitators: Gwen Nolan and Rosemarie Martelli

The death of a loved one is certainly one of life’s most difficult moments. A time of grief and mourning is a normal, natural response to loss of someone you love. Your grief journey is just that, yours. There are no rules or normal time frame. Grief is not a sign of weakness. We respond to grief with all that we are: physically, emotionally, and spiritually. The intense reactions of grief can cause pain to the person of even the strongest faith. Though difficult, the journey through the grief process is a necessary one. We believe that when shared, our burdens are lightened. We offer a place to share your concerns and experiences, support others and be supported by others who are going through, or have gone through, this painful journey.

We are offering a support group at St. Theresa’s. This group will meet a total of six sessions to share experiences of loss. These will be held on: Tuesdays 3:00-4:30 pm beginning October 8, 2019 at St. Theresa’s Faith Formation Center, 450 Radio Road, Little Egg Harbor. If you have any questions and /or would

like to be part of this group, please call Gwen

at 609-335-5252.

Food Pantry and place in the specially marked collection boxes in the Gathering Space and in the vestibule of the Daily Chapel or mail to 450 Radio Road, Little Egg Harbor, NJ. Of course, cash is always accepted. Thanks.
