Baking Tools Used In Commercial Kitchens

Types of Baking Tools and USes

There are a wide variety of baking tools used in domestic, commercial

and industrial kitchens. The core equipment of baking is the oven. This is

where all the magic happens. Listed below are different tools and equipment

used in baking:

1. Oven: this equipment is used to provide heat which is transferred to food

items allowing them to cook. Stoves have gauges that are used to cook

food at different temperatures.

2. Electric mixers: these can be hand-held or standing. They are convenient

as they eliminate time consumption and mix ingredients to different

consistencies.

3. Mixing bowls: these are of different sizes and they are used to hold

ingredients that are being combined for different mixtures.

4. Measuring cups: they two types are dry and liquid cups. As suggested dry

cups measure dry ingredients and liquid cups measure liquid ingredients.

5. Measuring spoons: these are used to measure ingredients of small

quantities whether by teaspoons or tablespoons.

6. Wooden spoons: these are used to combine large quantities of ingredients.

7. Whisk: this utensil is used to mix ingredients of small quantities as well as

for whisking.

8. Commercial Half-Sheet Pans – Heavy-duty aluminium pans, typically 18

x 13 inches, used for cookie sheets, large-batch brownies and sponge

cakes; for protecting the oven from dripping pies; as a tray to catch

ingredients you are sprinkling on cakes or cookies; for carrying

ingredients from here to there, etc.

9.  Parchment Paper – these are cut to fit cake pans, make parchment cones

and, of course, to line cookie sheet pans (half-sheet pans), making for easy

clean up. It is also handy to sift dry ingredients onto it; you can then pick

up the paper and pour ingredients right into a bowl or measuring cup.

10. Oven Thermometer – Without an independent oven thermometer, you do

not really know what temperature your oven is heating to. Poorly

calibrated ovens are pretty common and can wreak havoc with your baked

goods.

11. Rolling pin: these pins are usually made of wood and they are used to roll

dough to different measures of thickness in pastries.

12. Cake pans: there are many different types of cake pans and they are of

different sizes. Types include spring pan, 8 and 9’ baking tins, angel cake

pan and others. These are used to bake cakes of different sizes and forms.

They have taller sides which can be round, square, rectangular or have

special shapes primarily used for preparing cakes and other desserts.

13. Pie plate: this is a metallic or glass or ceramic pan shaped slightly larger

at the top than the bottom for easier removal of a fruit filled pastry.

14. Pudding pans: these are of different sizes as well and are used to bake

puddings.

15. Metal spatula: small utensil like a knife but used often to spread frosting,

level dry ingredients when measuring or slice butter.

16. Cookie scoop: size of scoop used for making drop cookies, mini muffins

or cupcakes.

17. Pastry brush: this tool is used for basting baked goods with melted butter

or brushing on glazes.

18. Casserole dishes: these are glass wares that are used to bake and serve au

gratins, casseroles as well as other dishes.

19. Pastry blender: this utensil is used to cut frim pieces of butter or

shortening so that it can be mixed with flour for pastry or dough.

20. Pizza cutter: this is used to cut pizza and similar items into attractive

slices.

21. Baking tray/sheet: these are used as platters on which one may bake items

such as cookies, meats, pizza and other items.

22. Piping bag and nozzles: these are used to provide assistance when

applying frosting or icing on cakes, muffins or cupcakes.
