Classic literature is such because it has withstood the tests of time, being recognized for artistic greatness and with a universal message throughout the generations. The reason that we read the classics is because they still matter, they’re still relevant, and they’re still making connections.

That being said, it doesn’t meant that the classics are the most accessible as they’re typically about times and concepts that no longer exist and in language that is not current. Additionally, the classics were written by adults, for adults.

William Shakespeare is amongst the least-accessible of these classic writers, but placement amongst the greats is not in question due to his contributions to the English language, mastery of literary devices, ability to captivate audiences hundreds of years later, and writing the most referenced stories. In class, we will be focusing on his writing and language in his play Romeo and Juliet. At home, you will be reading a book of your choosing that incorporates one of the universal themes found in his play.

The purpose of this assignment is to construct concrete examples of how and why classic literature is still relevant: the themes, conflicts, and social commentary are still present in modern literature.

Attached is a list of books that have either direct, obvious connections to Romeo and Juliet or share a thematic element. You will select one of these books to read on your own outside of class and base a comparison project on for the end of this unit. Many of the books could fit into two or more categories, so focus more on their descriptions that their classifying category. If there is a book that you think should be on this list but is not, bring it to my attention and we can discuss whether or not you can use it for this project. You can exchange your book for something else on the list at any time, but do so carefully so as not to run out of time. No more than two people may read the same book: the challenge is to pick the book that you like and that matters to you as opposed to reading the same book that your friends are.

You will be responsible for pacing yourself and identifying main ideas, characterization, literary devices, and so on in the book that you select. There will be small assignments along the way to help keep you on track and to give you the opportunity to discuss the book, but you are otherwise on your own.

At the end of this unit, on __________________, you will be turning in a project that explains why your book can be paired with Romeo and Juliet and how reading it enhanced your understanding of the play. Your project can be anything you like: a PowerPoint presentation, an essay, a video, a collection of photographs or paintings, a poem, a piece of creative writing, a song, community service or advocacy, a newspaper…you’re limited only by your imagination!A project proposal is due on __________________. You will not be held to your initial proposal in case you start working on it and discover you want to go in a different direction, but you should inform me of any changes you make so that I can help you achieve success with this assignment.

Your project should be accompanied by a rationale and a reflection, addressing what you did and why. For example, if you paint the scene where Romeo and Juliet first met, but using the characters of R and Julie from Warm Bodies, explain why that scene stood out to you and why the characters can be exchanged without compromising the meaning. A ballpark minimum for this is 600 words.

On the day that this project is due, you will present a brief summary of your project, or your complete project if it can be shown in under five minutes. Your grade will not be affected by your presentation, but that doesn’t mean you should plan ahead and practice it!

Creativity is abundant! The project is unique and fascinating. Thought and consideration of the format and genre is evident.

A multitude of thinking levels of present, focusing on higher level thematic, global, and personal connections.

Focus and Clarity

The focus shifts rapidly and without order, leading to confusion OR the focus is heavily weighed on one text and barely touches on the other.

The focus is fairly balanced, paying equal attention to both texts and transitions between the two are understood and easily followed.

The focus is perfectly balanced with clear transitions between the two texts, as well as incorporation of additional texts, media, or information.

Romeo and Juliet characters and times reimagined Juliet Immortal by Stacey Jay

o Juliet Capulet didn’t take her own life. She was murdered by the person she trusted most, her new husband, Romeo Montague, who made the sacrifice to ensure his own immortality. But Romeo didn’t anticipate that Juliet would be granted eternal life as well, and would become an agent for the Ambassadors of Light.

For seven hundred years, Juliet has struggle to preserve romantic love and the lives of the innocent, while Romeo has fought for the dark side, seeking to destroy the human heart. Until now:Now Juliet has found her own forbidden love, and Romeo, O Romeo, will do everything in his power to destroy their happiness.Secrets unfold and surprises about in Stacey Jay’s powerfully dark romance, which reunites literature’s most tragic couple.

Romeo’s Ex: Rosaline’s Story by Lisa Fieldero Rosaline won't let anyone or anything get in the way of her future as a healer.

That is, until she meets Benvolio. Where Romeo's words had been hollow and unfounded, Benvolio's are filled with sincerity and true love. Now Rosaline finds herself caught between her feelings, her ambition, and her family's long-standing feud with the Montagues. When Romeo turns his affections toward Ros's cousin, Juliet, their relationship brings the feud of the two houses to a new level. Rosaline and Benvolio hatch a plan to bring peace to the two families. But will they succeed?

Still Star-Crossed by Melinda Taubo Romeo and Juliet are gone. Will love live on? Despite the glooming peace that's

settled on Verona after the recent tragedy, Montagues and Capulets are brawling in the streets. Faced with more bloody battles, Prince Escalus concludes that the only way to truly marry the fortunes of these two families is to literally marry them together. Everyone is skeptical, but none more so than the pair selected, for the most eligible Montague bachelor is Benvolio, Romeo's best friend, still anguished by the loss of his companions, and the chosen Capulet maid is Juliet's older cousin Rosaline, the girl Romeo first loved and whose refusal of Romeo's affection paved the way for bloodshed. Contrary to their late cousins, there's no love lost between Benvolio and Rosaline, yet they forge a bond to end the renewed feud not only to escape their forced betrothal, but to save their lives and the city of Verona itself.

Juliet’s Nurse by Loid Leveeno An enthralling new telling of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet—told from the

perspective of Juliet’s nurse. In Verona, a city ravaged by plague and political rivalries, a mother mourning the death of her day-old infant enters the household of the powerful Cappelletti family to become the wet-nurse to their newborn baby. As she serves her beloved Juliet over the next fourteen years, the nurse learns the Cappellettis’ darkest

secrets. Those secrets—and the nurse’s deep personal grief—erupt across five momentous days of love and loss that destroy a daughter, and a family.By turns sensual, tragic, and comic, Juliet’s Nurse gives voice to one of literature’s most memorable and distinctive characters, a woman who was both insider and outsider among Verona’s wealthy ruling class. Exploring the romance and intrigue of interwoven loyalties, rivalries, jealousies, and losses only hinted at in Shakespeare’s play, this is a never-before-heard tale of the deepest love in Verona—the love between a grieving woman and the precious child of her heart.

Modern Romeo and Juliet The Juliet Club by Suzanne Harper

o Kate Sanderson inherited her good sense from her mother, a disciplined law professor, and her admiration for the Bard from her father, a passionate Shakespeare scholar. When she gets dumped, out of the blue, for the Practically Perfect Ashley Lawson, she vows never to fall in love again. From now on she will control her own destiny, and every decision she makes will be highly reasoned and rational. She thinks Shakespeare would have approved. So when she is accepted to a summer Shakespeare symposium in Verona, Italy, Kate sees it as the ideal way to get over her heartbreak once and for all. She'll lose herself in her studies, explore ancient architecture, and eat plenty of pasta and gelato. (Plus, she'll be getting college credit for it--another goal accomplished!) But can even completely logical Kate resist the romance of living in a beautiful villa in the city where those star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet met and died for each other? Especially when the other Shakespeare Scholars--in particular Giacomo, with his tousled brown hair, expressive dark eyes, and charming ways--try hard to break her protective shell?

Warm Bodies by Isaac Mariono 'R' is a zombie. He has no name, no memories and no pulse, but he has dreams.

He is a little different from his fellow Dead.Amongst the ruins of an abandoned city, R meets a girl. Her name is Julie and she is the opposite of everything he knows - warm and bright and very much alive, she is a blast of colour in a dreary grey landscape. For reasons he can't understand, R chooses to save Julie instead of eating her, and a tense yet strangely tender relationship begins. This has never happened before. It breaks the rules and defies logic, but R is no longer content with life in the grave. He wants to breathe again, he wants to live, and Julie wants to help him. But their grim, rotting world won't be changed without a fight...

Romiette and Julio by Sharon M. Drapero Like Shakespeare's famous star-crossed lovers, Romiette Cappelle and Julio

Montague face strong opposition to their budding romance. In their case, a

dangerous gang's disapproval of their interracial relationship puts the two in mortal peril.

Saving Juliet by Suzanne Selforso Manhattan meets Verona in this time-bending twist on Shakespeare.

When Mimi is magically thrust into the middle of Shakespeare’s Verona, she must find a way to help Juliet fight for her future happiness. Will she be able to give this classic tragedy a happy ending?

Juliet by Anne Fortiero Twenty-five-year-old Julie Jacobs is heartbroken over the death of her beloved

Aunt Rose. But the shock goes even deeper when she learns that the woman who has been like a mother to her has left her entire estate to Julie’s twin sister. The only thing Julie receives is a key—one carried by her mother on the day she herself died—to a safety-deposit box in Siena, Italy. This key sends Julie on a journey that will change her life forever—a journey into the troubled past of her ancestor Giulietta Tolomei. In 1340, still reeling from the slaughter of her parents, Giulietta was smuggled into Siena, where she met a young man named Romeo. Their ill-fated love turned medieval Siena upside-down and went on to inspire generations of poets and artists, the story reaching its pinnacle in Shakespeare’s famous tragedy. But six centuries have a way of catching up to the present, and Julie gradually begins to discover that here, in this ancient city, the past and present are hard to tell apart. The deeper she delves into the history of Romeo and Giulietta, and the closer she gets to the treasure they allegedly left behind, the greater the danger surrounding her—superstitions, ancient hostilities, and personal vendettas. As Julie crosses paths with the descendants of the families involved in the unforgettable blood feud, she begins to fear that the notorious curse—“A plague on both your houses!”—is still at work, and that she is destined to be its next target. Only someone like Romeo, it seems, could save her from this dreaded fate, but his story ended long ago. Or did it?.

Letters to Juliet: Celebrating Shakespeare’s Greatest Heroine, the Magical City of Verona, and the Power of Love by Lisa Friedman

o The enduring legend of Shakespeare’s pair of star-crossed lovers draws millions of visitors to Verona, Italy, each year. But that is just part of the story. Every day, letters, frequently addressed simply, “Juliet, Verona,” arrive in the city. They come by the truckload, in almost every language imaginable, written by romantics seeking Juliet’s counsel. Most of the missives talk of love, of course —love found and love lost, love sought and love remembered. And, amazingly, not one letter goes unanswered.Letters to Juliet tells the story of these letters and the volunteers who have been writing responses for more than seven decades —volunteers who first acted privately, and who are now sanctioned by the city of Verona as part of the Juliet Club. Featuring more than seventy-five heartfelt letters, this poetic book retraces

the history behind Shakespeare’s tale and tours the monuments that have fueled the world's enchantment with Juliet and her Romeo.

Star-crossed lovers and tragic romance The Invisible Wall: A Love Story that Broke Barriers by Harry Bernstein

o The narrow street where Harry Bernstein grew up, in a small English mill town, was seemingly unremarkable. It was identical to countless other streets in countless other working-class neighborhoods of the early 1900s, except for the “invisible wall” that ran down its center, dividing Jewish families on one side from Christian families on the other. Only a few feet of cobblestones separated Jews from Gentiles, but socially, it they were miles apart. On the eve of World War I, Harry’s family struggles to make ends meet. His father earns little money at the Jewish tailoring shop and brings home even less, preferring to spend his wages drinking and gambling. Harry’s mother, devoted to her children and fiercely resilient, survives on her dreams: new shoes that might secure Harry’s admission to a fancy school; that her daughter might marry the local rabbi; that the entire family might one day be whisked off to the paradise of America. Then Harry’s older sister, Lily, does the unthinkable: She falls in love with Arthur, a Christian boy from across the street. When Harry unwittingly discovers their secret affair, he must choose between the morals he’s been taught all his life, his loyalty to his selfless mother, and what he knows to be true in his own heart.

Daughter of Smoke & Bone by Laini Tayloro Around the world, black handprints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by

winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.In a dark and dusty shop, a devil's supply of human teeth grown dangerously low.And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherwordly war.Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real; she's prone to disappearing on mysterious "errands"; she speaks many languages--not all of them human; and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color. Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and she's about to find out. When one of the strangers--beautiful, haunted Akiva--fixes his fire-colored eyes on her in an alley in Marrakesh, the result is blood and starlight, secrets unveiled, and a star-crossed love whose roots drink deep of a violent past. But will Karou live to regret learning the truth about herself?

The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenggero Audrey Niffenegger's dazzling debut is the story of Clare, a beautiful, strong-

minded art student, and Henry, an adventuresome librarian, who have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was thirty-six, and were married when Clare was twenty-three and Henry thirty-one. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: his genetic

clock randomly resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity from his life, past and future. His disappearances are spontaneous and unpredictable, and lend a spectacular urgency to Clare and Henry's unconventional love story. That their attempt to live normal lives together is threatened by something they can neither prevent nor control, makes their story intensely moving and entirely unforgettable.

Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte o Wuthering Heights is a wild, passionate story of the intense and almost demonic

love between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, a foundling adopted by Catherine's father. After Mr Earnshaw's death, Heathcliff is bullied and humiliated by Catherine's brother Hindley and wrongly believing that his love for Catherine is not reciprocated, leaves Wuthering Heights, only to return years later as a wealthy and polished man. He proceeds to exact a terrible revenge for his former miseries. The action of the story is chaotic and unremittingly violent, but the accomplished handling of a complex structure, the evocative descriptions of the lonely moorland setting and the poetic grandeur of vision combine to make this unique novel a masterpiece of English literature.

Deft the Stars by Stephanie Parento Julia Cape: A dedicated classical piano student just trying to get through her last

semester of high school while waiting to hear from music conservatories. Reed MacAllister: A slacker more likely to be found by the stoners’ tree than in class.Julia and Reed might have graduated high school without ever speaking to each other…until, during a class discussion of Romeo and Juliet, Julia scoffs at the play’s theme of love at first sight, and Reed responds by arguing that feelings don’t always have to make sense. Julia tries to shake off Reed’s comment and forget about this boy who hangs with the stoner crowd—and who happens to have breathtaking blue eyes—but fate seems to bring the two together again and again. After they share an impulsive, passionate kiss, neither one can deny the chemistry between them. Yet as Julia gets closer to Reed, she also finds herself drawn into his dark world of drugs and violence. Then a horrific tragedy forces Julia’s and Reed’s families even farther apart…and Julia must decide whether she’s willing to give up everything for love.Defy the Stars is written in an edgy free-verse style that will appeal to fans of Ellen Hopkins and Lisa Schroeder; however, the writing is accessible enough to speak to non-verse fans as well. The novel’s combination of steamy romance and raw emotion will appeal to fans of Gayle Forman, Simone Elkeles, Jennifer Echols, and Tammara Webber. With a story, language and form that both pay homage to and subvert Shakespeare’s play, Defy the Stars is much more than just another Romeo and Juliet story.
