StomachHolds food and churns it with contractions of smooth muscle tissues. Lining contains cells which produce enzymes and acids. Has a rich supply of sensory nerves which signal when we have had enough to eat.

EsophagusMuscular tube connecting mouth to stomach. Lined with epithelial tissue including goblet cells which secrete mucus. Smooth muscle tissue contracts in waves of movement of called peristalsis move food down this tube. Peristalsis contractions are controlled by nerve tissue.

MouthDigestion begins here, both mechanically and chemically. Mechanical digestion uses the tongue and teeth to grind and rip food into smaller pieces. Chemical digestion is the breaking up of molecules of food using digestive enzymes that have been secreted by epithelial tissue in the salivary glands.

Salivary Glands

Secretes enzymes which start chemical digestion in the mouth.

PancreasThis accessory organ produces insulin which regulates the concentration of glucose (sugar) in the blood. Insulin signals muscle, fat and liver cells in the body to absorb glucose from the blood stream to be used for energy.

Liver This accessory organ produces bile which helps breakdown fats in food.

Gall Bladder

This accessory organ is about 10 cm long and shaped like a pear. It stores bile produced in the liver and fluids, fat and cholesterol. If this organ is removed your body will deliver bile directly from the liver into the digestive tract, and living without this organ is not terminal.

Small Cells lining this part of the system have cells that produce mucus. Contain smooth muscle which contract to move food substances through this 6m long section of the digestive tract. Lining is covered with many blood

Intestine

vessels to absorb vitamins, minerals and iron.Partially digested food is further digested by three enzymes which break down carbohydrates, proteins and lipids. These enzymes are secreted by the pancreas. The inner lining is composed of up to five million tiny projections called villi which increase surface area of the intestine and rate of absorption. 90% of the digestion and absorption of food occurs here. It is mainly responsible for the absorption of nutrients and minerals from food.

Large Intestine

A 1.5 m long section of the digestive tract also known as the colon. The lining of this part of the tract absorbs water from food that cannot be digested.

Although it is shorter than the small intestine, this section is called “large” due to the greater diameter of this section of tract compared to the small intestine.

Rectum Stores fecal matter(waste) before it leaves the body through the colon. This 10-15cm part of the digestive tract ends with the anus.

AppendixThis accessory organ is a thin tube, approximately 10 cm long and shaped like a worm. It is located in the lower right part of the torso, near the junction between the large and small intestine (but is not a part of the tract). In adults is thought to be related to immune functions, and has recently been related to hormone control in young adults. Removal of this organ will not result in death, but an infection and rupture can be terminal.

Anus Where waste is excreted from the body. The end of the digestive tract.
