Carbon Monoxide

Fit a detector/alarm in each room that has an appliance that produces a flame, e.g. gas or oil fired central heating system, coal or wood fire, gas fire

Bath seat

This is not a safety item – always stay with the child if used

Adult bed – child alone

Don't leave a baby young/child – risk of fall, getting stuck and suffocation

Bathing

An adult should always stay with the child

Bathwater

Fill with cold water first and check (with elbow) before putting child in. Alternatively, plumb a thermostatic mixing valve (TMV) into the hot water system to control the temperature

Blind cord

Fit a cleat (special hook) high on the window frame and tie up so it's not within reach of a child

Button batteries

Keep loose ones locked away out of reach. Make sure a child cannot reach products that use them if the battery compartment isn't secured with a screw

Candles

Never leave them burning unattended, in a draught or anywhere near curtains or under shelves. Put them out before going to bed

Cigarettes

Check none are still burning before going to bed

Cleaning products/household chemicals

Store in original containers and keep in locked cupboards or out of reach (at or above eye level)

Climbing/garden play equipment

Ensure suitable for age, properly supervised and not on a hard surface

E-cigarette

Keep them and refills well out of reach of children. A few drops of the liquid can harm a child

Kettle

Use at the back of a work top. Do not carry around when full of hot water

Fires – open/gas/electric/woodburners

Ensure they have guards

Whole grapes

Cut into quarters

Highchair

Ensure the child has a five-point harness and always supervise

Hair straighteners

Use away from children. Cool down in a safe place out of reach – use a heatproof pouch if possible

Hot drinks

Ensure out of reach of child. Don't leave on low table or floor. Don't use when holding/feeding a child

Clothes iron

Ensure cannot be touched when it is hot. Place out of reach to cool down

Laundry and dishwasher tablets – liquitabs

Store securely and do not leave around when doing the washing

Lighters and matches

Store well out of reach

Nappy changing

Best done on the floor

Nappy sacks

Store well out of reach

Paddling pool

Empty immediately after use

Pans on stove/cooker

Use rear burner and/or turn handles away from the front of the cooker

Medicines/tablets

Keep in a locked drawer/cupboard or out of reach (at or above eye level). Take care about the contents of handbags – including those of visitors

Pillow in cot

Don't use for babies (under one year) – there is a suffocation risk

Carrier bag

Knot and recycle or store safety

Plugs – multiple in socket

Using a multi-way bar extension lead rather than a block adapter. Check rating of the extension lead before plugging appliances into it

Garden pond

Fill it in, fence it off or securely cover it. Make sure your garden is secure so that your child can't reach a neighbour's one

Prop-feeding a baby

Don't do it!

Socket covers

Not needed. Plug sockets are safe. Electrocution is extremely rare

Stairs

Ensure free of clutter. Fit safety gates to prevent access to top and bottom (for children under 24 months). Site carefully and fit properly

Top bunk in bunk bed

Best avoid for children under six

Trampoline

Only use a product designed for age/size. Locate on soft energy-absorbing ground or use safety netting. Supervise – one person at a time

Windows

Ensure restrictors and locks are fitted and used. If locked, keep keys where adults can find them

Smoke inhalation

Fit a detector/alarm on each floor of your home and test them regularly. Have an escape plan and practice with the family

Clutter

Keep stairs and escape routes clear

Baby walker

Don't use, or supervise at all times if baby is in one

Storage furniture

Secure to the wall to prevent them tipping over

Co-sleeper cot

Read the instructions. Don't leave the baby unsupervised with the side down

Baby positioner cushion

Unnecessary, don't use

Car seat/travel system

Don't leave baby to sleep in one of these
