Lutterworth u3a AGM 202118th Annual General Meeting

Agenda and meeting details on back page of this newsletter

As you have heard, the lockdown has been extended until July 19th. We had hoped to hold our delayed AGM on June 30th but have had to change the date.

We hope that you will still be able to join us on the revised date of THURSDAY July 22nd in the Wycliffe Rooms from 2 pm. Naturally, we are hoping that we shall not have to change this date again.

Other dates to put in your diary are Friday 30th July when we shall be going to Elton Hall for a Garden Group outing. There are still spaces on the coach if you are interested. Our annual picnic, which takes the place of our monthly meeting each August is on Tuesday August 10th, please see the newsletter for details or contact Linda. There is a New Adventure Group event arranged for Wednesday August 18th; you can try abseiling and either canoeing or kayaking. Another Garden Group outing has been arranged for Thursday August 19th to Newby Hall.

We shall return to our usual monthly meetings in the Wycliffe Rooms from 10 am on Tuesday September 14th with a really entertaining speaker and we hope that there will be no further disruptions thereafter.

YET ANOTHER FRAUD WARNING

Fraudsters tried, once again, recently to obtain money from our members' accounts. Luckily, they were not successful. Bill Tomkins supplied the following advice to try and thwart them if they contact you by email, text etc, which you will find useful.

"It's worth reminding everybody that almost always these scams contain language errors - misspellings, use of a word that isn't quite correct. However, it takes very attentive reading to spot these errors! In general, follow my father-in-law's advice, regarding driving a car: if in doubt, don't!

Page 2: u3asites.org.uk€¦  · Web viewEach room is packed with treasures and porcelain, magnificent furniture and fine paintings from the Old Masters to remarkable 19th century works

As an extension of this, there is NEVER ANY NEED to act swiftly to these messages, so don't do so. Always leave any action untill you've had time to think about it, and, if possible talk about it with someone you know and trust.”

Lutterworth u3a Day Out to Crich Tramway Village on Tuesday July 13th.

I am very sorry but as the Lockdown does not end until July 19th, I have had to cancel the Days Out trip to Crich for the second year in succession. I have refunded the money to all those who had booked and paid and hope to be able to arrange another Day Out for later in the year.

Lutterworth u3a Picnic 2021

Instead of our normal monthly meeting in August, we have a picnic. Two of our members, Liz and David White, very kindly invite us to use their lovely garden for the event. This year the picnic will be on our normal monthly meeting date of 10th August, the second Tuesday in the month. It will be held at Greenlea, Workhouse Lane, Burbage, Hinckley and we can arrive from 12 noon on that day. In order to reach Greenleas you need to go along the A5 towards Hinckley from Lutterworth and turn right where it is signposted Burbage. Workhouse Lane is a mile from the A5 on your left and Greenleas is then immediately on your right. There will be a sign close to their driveway. There is plenty of car parking in the field beyond the house. Please bring your picnic, table and chairs and prepare to be entertained. There will be games and quizzes with prizes and a large marquee in which to eat your picnic. At the end of the afternoon there will be free tea and cakes. This is open to all our members so please come along and have a lovely afternoon

BRIAN FOWLER’S JUNE EXPEDITION 2021

On the occasion of my 20th birthday last year (I was born on 29th Feb) my 3 children (Eric, Alison and Neil) presented me with a gift and that was an opportunity to take part in an event known as The Snowdonia Challenge.  They would be joining me as a team of 4 and we should have travelled to Wales in April 2020.  Covid lockdown caused the event to be knocked on to April 2021 and then with restrictions still in place at that time it was not until the weekend of June 19th that we made our way to LLanberis.  Team briefings at the hotel on Saturday night prepared us for the start early on Sunday morning 20th June.  At 8-30 we were on our marks on our bikes for the cycle ride, up some steep hills, around Snowdonia.  The bikes were discarded at the foot of Snowdon and we donned boots to ascend the mountain via the Rangers Track, warm early on but then cooler as low cloud swallowed up the mountain.  We paused briefly at the summit for photos before descending via the LLanberis trail to the village.  We shed the boots that had carried us up, over and down again for a distance of some 9 miles.  A short walk to the edge of the lake known as Llyn Padarn before donning life jackets and clambering into kayaks for a 5k paddle around the lake to the finish.  We crossed the finish line some 35 minutes inside the competition cut off time having been on the go for nearly 7-1/2 hours.  The sparkling wine in plastic cups provided by the event organisers was well received.  It was noted by them that I was by far the oldest person who had ever taken part.!!!!

Page 3: u3asites.org.uk€¦  · Web viewEach room is packed with treasures and porcelain, magnificent furniture and fine paintings from the Old Masters to remarkable 19th century works

I had to admit to be being mad and said I caught it from my children.

At our family meal that evening we toasted each other with further wine and looked back with pride on our achievements.

Two days after returning from Wales I set off to Melrose in Scotland from whence on June 23rd I started my 140 mile walk along St Cuthbert's Way that took me along the Scots/English border until dropping down into Northumberland and then on to Lindisfarne to the end of that leg of my walk.  From Lindisfarne I walked further down the coast following St Oswald's Trail ending at Craster where I enjoyed Crab and beer at The Fisherman's Arms whilst enjoying the aroma of smoked kippers from the Smokery opposite the pub.

INTEREST GROUPS AND EVENT REPORTS

Always check online for possible timing variations. Check with the group leader if you are not sure. A number of groups have room for more members. If you wish to join any of them, please contact the Group Coordinator

PETANQUECoordinatorsSue Sharp and Rae Flowerday

The first meeting of the Petanque Group took place on June 24th with 10 members turning up for a most enjoyable morning in the gardens of Pesto. The restaurant is not charging the group to use their Petanque Court and it would be appreciated if members would buy a drink whilst there. They may also decide occasionally to lunch there after the play finishes. The next meeting will be on Wednesday July 7th at 11 am. You will be very welcome to join us.

TOPICAL/CURRENT AFFAIRS GROUPCoordinator: Richard Whittington

June meetingIt was a lovely sunny day, so we met outdoors.Topic 1You have to have one new friend. Will it be Dominic Cummings or Martin Bashir?A quick Google revealed the following qualities for a friend.

I am trustworthy. I am honest with others. I am generally very dependable. I am loyal to the people I care about. I am easily able to trust others. I experience and express empathy for

others. I am able to be non-judgmental. I am a good listener.

Do either of these people measure up to any of these characteristics. We thought that this was doubtful. The qualities they possess may make them good in political circles or as journalists but not people to invite round for a meal. Both men are intelligent and very capable at their professions but not necessarily good friendship material.

Topic 2

How much aid should we give to other countries, and should we cancel the new Royal Yacht to help the Aid budget? Is the Aid budget for Aid or political considerations, this is often the case as some of the countries are far from poor e.g. the space programme in India?Possibly the aid should be more targeted, e.g., infrastructure, health services, increased ability to fight the pandemic etcWe compare reasonably well with other countries, but the Netherlands often give more than one per cent. But is one per cent enough, should we be giving 5 per cent? The new Royal Yacht. Is anybody interested? Possibly not!Topic 3 Should Colin Pitchfork have been paroled after having been given a life sentence?A topic close to anybody from the Enderby area. Many of the details of the horrendous attacks were not revealed at the time. Anyone who knows any of the parents involved know the anguish they still suffer.Has he really showed the improvements mentioned.? Is he still a risk to the public?  If he was sentenced now, the punishment would possibly have been more severe. There are many other prisoners guilty of similar offences so when should they be released?

We continued our discussions for another few hours, at the local hostelry!!!

The next meeting will be on July 7th.

Richard Whittington

GARDEN VISITS GROUPCo-ordinator: Linda Patton

I have booked two trips out so far this summer to visit some beautiful gardens:

On 30th July you can join us for a trip to Elton Hall near Peterborough. The group will be met at Bosworth's Garden Centre in the walled garden by guides who will lead us along a pleasant tree-lined walk. There will be a guided tours of the Hall in groups of about 15

Page 5: u3asites.org.uk€¦  · Web viewEach room is packed with treasures and porcelain, magnificent furniture and fine paintings from the Old Masters to remarkable 19th century works

and plenty of time to look around the gardens. There is a cafe within the grounds.Elton Hall is an enchanting house that has evolved throughout the centuries culminating in a fascinating amalgamation of styles. Each room is packed with treasures and porcelain, magnificent furniture and fine paintings from the Old Masters to remarkable 19th century works. The Library is the largest in private ownership and possesses wonderful treasures including Henry VIII's prayer book.

Formal gardens, first laid out in the 1730s, have been lovingly restored over the past 40 years. It is now acknowledged as an RHS Partnership Garden, it has mature topiary, a Gothic Orangery, a flower garden with herbaceous borders, a sunken garden, shrub garden and box walk. The cost is £28 per person, which includes the coach, entry and the guided tour.

Please contact Linda if you would like to join this day out. The coach will leave at 10.30 am from outside the Wycliffe Rooms and from Elton Hall for the return journey at 4.15 pm.

On 19th August I have arranged a trip to Newby Hall near Ripon. Newby Hall has been featured this year on two occasions on the Antiques Roadshow and the gardens and Hall both looked lovely.

The cost of £31 per person for this trip includes the coach, entry to the gardens and exhibitions and either a free-flow tour of the ground floor of the hall or a guided tour (Newby Hall staff have not yet decide which of these two options will apply). There is a lovely restaurant there with quality food.

The coach will leave from outside the Wycliffe Rooms at 8.30 am for this trip and we shall have a 20-30 minute comfort stop on the journey. We shall leave Newby Hall for the return at 4.30 pm. Although a fairly long day, I am sure that you will have a lovely day out. Please contact Linda if you wish to join this visit.

BIRD WATCHING GROUP

Co-ordinators: Rita Nichols Ann Fletcher

Despite an iffy weather forecast, our June visit to Brandon Marsh turned out to be very pleasant with good weather. As well as enjoying the birds, we had good views of a muntjac deer, a minute toad and a variety of attractive flora. We watched many birds in action including lapwings mobbing a grey heron. We missed our two female experts, on whom we rely to identify the difficult breeds such as the almost indistinguishable (at least for many of us) warblers. Our next outing will be on Friday 23rd July meeting at the Recreation ground car park at 9.30 a.m. with our pack ups.

READING GROUP Co-ordinator: Linda Patton

Only five of us met for the July Reading Group meeting but we had a really good meeting. We all loved the book as did most of the other members who kindly emailed me their reviews.

Maggie O'Farrell had waited until after her son had passed his eleventh birthday to write this book which tells of a playwright from Stratford whose son Hamnet died at the age of eleven from the plague having fooled death by taking the place of his twin sister. The book was really well-written and we could put ourselves in Stratford and the lives of the playwright's family. Although it is called Hamnet, it is believed to have been the reason why we can now enjoy one of Shakespeare's greatest plays, "Hamlet". The main character is Hamnet's mother and Maggie O'Farrell paints her really well whereas previous writers have tended to treat Shakespeare's wife with disdain. We all agreed that this was a five star book and would recommend it to others.

Our August meeting will take place on MONDAY August 2nd in Bitteswell Village Hall if I am able to book it. If you are not currently a member of the Reading Group, please email me to check this as I shall let all current members know the venue for sure. At the August meeting, we shall discuss "Midnight Library" by Matt Haig and at our September meeting, "Shuggie Bain" by Douglas Stuart.

HISTORY GROUPCo-ordinator: Linda Patton

A cold and drizzly afternoon saw seven members of the History Group meet in Linda's garden under the gazebo for the first face-to-face meeting of the History Group for over a year.

We were here to learn about James I.

Previously all we really knew was that he was the first Stuart king, the first King of Great Britain and that he upset the Catholics, some of whom decided to blow up the Houses of Parliament as a result.

Today we learnt much more about this very complex person who, if he had not been a king, would have liked to be "a University man". We have the James I Bible to thank him for although it took seven years, fifty four translators and six committees to produce, but which was eventually one which could be understood by everyone and used only eight thousand words.

Page 7: u3asites.org.uk€¦  · Web viewEach room is packed with treasures and porcelain, magnificent furniture and fine paintings from the Old Masters to remarkable 19th century works

I can email notes that I put together for this meeting to anyone who missed the meeting and would like to receive them.

I am not available for a meeting on the fourth Monday in July and shall contact all members about the whereabouts of our August meeting nearer the time. Any new members who wish to join our next meeting can email me their details and I shall let them know where and when we shall meet in August.

NEW ADVENTURE GROUPCoordinator: Ken PattonFirst of all to let you know we had an extremely interesting and competitive day Clay Shooting at Kibworth at the end of May. We were on the range for nearly 2 hours with an instructor at first making sure we didn't shoot each other, and then setting up 6 different targets to develop our skills! The end result was a joint victory for first place with Lewis Freeman and Roy Maiden taking the honours. A really enjoyable adventure for us all.

Our next adventure is booked for Wednesday August 18th at the Leicester Outdoor Pursuits Centre, Loughborough Road, Leicester, LE4 PN. Activities booked are Abseiling from 10.00 to 11.30 am and Canoeing or Kayaking from 12.30 to 14.00 pm. Cost per person for both activities is great value for £24.00

SHORT WALKS GROUPCo-ordinators:Lyn Foxwell and Fay Goodwin

This month only 7 walkers started from The Wheatsheaf pub in Crick village. We followed the road out of the village and then picked up a bridleway along which we passed meadows filled with an abundance of wild flowers, a wonderful sight. According to the walk leader, on a previous visit to this area they’d heard that a circle of trees had been planted at the request of a young woman, instead of her having an engagement ring. It was decided that as this was quite a while ago, the trees must have overgrown the ring and therefore we were unable to spot them. We returned via Crack’s Hill on a downhill path to the Millenium Bridge and then followed the towpath via Crick wharf, returning to the pub for a welcome drink and nice lunch.

Date of next walk: Tuesday 27 July Meet at 10.00 a.m. at the Recreation Car Park, Coventry Road, Lutterworth

19th May Walk Report.

17 walkers met at The Friendly Inn, Frankton on a bright spring morning, and after ordering lunch (a first for some months) set off on a fairly easygoing 4.1 mile walk, following village pavements, field paths and disused railway line. Early on we were granted a magnificent view of Draycote Water from the top of an incline, although many, catching up with gossip, failed to spot. Further on, we were treated to a forest glade of bluebells, where we paused to take in the scene. The walk finished with 12 enjoying a well-earned lunch and drink. Thanks to Peter Moore for organising the walk.

9th June Walk Report

16 walkers met at the Brampton Valley Way car park at Maidwell on a beautiful summer morning. Heading south for a few hundred yards, we left the disused railway line to head back into Maidwell village and crossed the A508. Walking between two recently built houses we took a narrow, well-hidden alleyway, to emerge at the start of a field path. From here, we followed a country lane for about a mile, where amazingly, no traffic was encountered. We then turned east across fields to pick up the disused railway line for the flat walk back to the start.

Future 2nd Wednesday Walks

As one of our walk coordinators is temporarily incapacitated, we have decided to cease the 2nd Wednesday walks for the rest of this year, and jointly continue to run the 4th Wednesday walks.

The next walk will be on 28th July.
