A Letter from the Editor:

It is nice to finally have some more temperate weather here in Saskatchewan. That harsh cold was getting to a lot of people, and now we have some temperatures in the single digits, which feels almost tropical by comparison.

We have some awesome events coming up in the next week or two, so do check out the upcoming events this month. We also have some valuable information shared by our Rock Lady, Ave, regarding Blue Lace Agate and the benefits of having it. Have you ever heard

of Jun Shin Jyutsu? No? Well, check out the article by Rod Kaminski and learn how you can incorporate it into your personal healing regime. Are you a mentor or are you looking for a mentor? There is an article about that by yours truly in the Reflections from the Shaman's Hut segment. Also, I did not know that snow could be various colors due to algae. That was news to me!

Thank you to all my contributors. You make this newsletter fascinating every month. If you would like to receive this newsletter you can get your free subscription by emailing a request for it to [email protected] and I will make it so.

Enjoy the read!

Deerhorn Shamanic Services Floating Drum Circle

The Floating Drum Circle will now be available!

What is a Floating Drum Circle? It is a Drum Circle that is able to move from one location to another.

How does this work? Invite a minimum of 10 friends over for a drum circle in the privacy of your own home. Trent brings the supplies for the Drum Circle and the Ceremony.

Ceremony? Yes. As you all know, Trent's Drum Circles are Ceremony/Ritual based, which makes them both spectacular and unique. These celebrations can be in accordance to the phase of the Moon, or the Season, or whatever you choose to celebrate.

Who is in charge? You are in charge of the space and the people you invite and the number of people you can comfortably accommodate. Trent is in charge of the circle once it begins.

What if I don't have 10 people? It is important to have the minimum of 10 in order to be financially feasible for Trent to lead the circle. Upon your request in advance of the registration date, Trent can share the date and time and contact number with his contacts who can then contact you to see if there is enough space.

Who pays? Each person pays their fee ($20) ahead of the date of the Drum Circle. If the fee is not paid 3 days in advance of the circle, the spot goes to the next person in line on the waiting list. The host/hostess collects all fees and pays Trent before the circle begins on the date set. Hosts/Hostesses get the Drum Circle free of charge.

Children in attendance must be strictly monitored by their parents.

Any damaged supplies must be paid for or replaced by the one who damaged it (or parents if it is a child) by a similar article of equal or greater value.

What is the method of payment? Cash only. This makes it much easier for the host/hostess to collect.

To arrange for a Floating Drum Circle in your home, please contact Trent Deerhorn at [email protected] or at (306) 978-5300.

Rock Talk by Ave Riddler

BLUE LACE AGATEThis agate is easily recognized by a lacy banding of blue and white. It has a strong connection to air elementals, including flight, and elevated spiritual beings. It also works best with the throat chakra, but can support work involving the heart, third eye and even crown. A

very inspiring mineral, that can help one reach higher levels of attunement, it also has a higher vibrational energy helping one connect to energies in those high vibrational realms. Even though it has such a strong high vibration, it shares the more subtle energies of agates, and lends a gentle bridge into these higher levels.

If one struggles with speaking their mind working with blue lace agate can help them find their voice; by helping one articulate and clearly speak their truth, with confidence and clarity. This agate can help reduce the fear of speaking that truth, and even ease self-doubt that could be silencing that voice. It can also help clear the mind so that the one working with it can better hear their own inner voice. Blue lace agate would be a good support to focus with when working with affirmations, strengthening and amplifying the meaning of those words. There is a harmonizing energy found when working with this agate that would make it a good tool when one needs to be diplomatic in their daily life, or business ventures. Because of the clarity and confidence blue lace agate can help one find, this would be a good support when having to do any public speaking. It is also useful to those who need to speak as part of their job, a teacher, a workshop facilitator, any time that the words being spoken are a truth, blue lace agate would be a support.

The slow steady energy of the agate means the changes and improvements that can be gained by working with blue lace agate will be gradual, and accumulative, which can make it feel like it’s not really helping, but it can also mean the changes brought forth are more sustainable.

Physically working with blue lace agate may help with treatments of arthritic conditions, including hereditary bone deformities. (I highly recommend wearing a piece as jewelry on an area affected by arthritis if possible) It can also be used to help strengthen and mend damages to the bones, and skeletal structure. If you have weak nails, working with blue lace agate may help promote healthy growth. It may help support treatments of blockages within the nervous system, and digestive system. An elixir using blue lace agate may help balance the fluid around the brain providing relief from those conditions. Blue lace agate elixirs may also promote healing to the eyes and irises. Because of its connection to the throat chakra, it may also help with treatments of throat based illnesses like laryngitis, soreness or inflammations. Jin Shin Jyutsu: A harmonizer for a hectic world !

by Rod Kaminski

Page 11: deerhornshamanic.com · Web viewFlight: A Living, Breathing Document of Consciousness Volume 9 Issue 92, Febr uary, 2020 Articles and excerpts that will inform and inspire! A Letter

The first question that I usually get is what kind of martial arts is this? The answer can be found in the translation of Jin Shin Jyutsu which means, “ The art of the creator through the person of compassion and knowing ”. There is no physical component beyond light touch on various points on the body. If you are familiar with modalities like Acupuncture or Reiki, then you probably have a basic understanding of what Jin Shin Jyutsu is.

Relatively unknown in the West, Jin Shin Jyutsu is thousands of years old and a Japanese man named Jiro Murai studied this art for fifty years until his death in 1961. Jiro met a young woman in 1942 named Mary Burmeister who worked with him for many years and is responsible for bringing this art to the West. She enhanced the material and formed the basis of the texts so that everyone could learn this life art.

The simplicity and complexity of Jin Shin Jyutsu is what draws people to this modality because no matter what your skill level, motivation or intention with this art is, ANYONE CAN DO THIS!It can be as simple as holding a specific finger to harmonize a flow (emotion) or using a elaborate sequential flow pattern that digs deeper into an issue. This is much like peeling back the layers of an onion until you get to the core of the project and that is where true resolution with an issue can be achieved.

A session consists of the client lying on the table ( fully clothed ) and the practitioner determines which flows to use through observation, listening and a person's pulses. There are 26 Safety Energy Locks on the right side of the body and 26 Safety Energy Locks on the left side. When a safety energy lock closes ( either partially or fully ) this can cause a dam like effect ( or stagnation ) which causes the flow to start travelling backwards. By connecting the safety energy locks through light touch, one can unburden the damming effect and initiate a higher level of health and get the energy flowing in the proper direction. Self-help holds are also given at the end of a session so that the client can continue the work on their particular project. What drew me to this art was the aspect of using self-help holds on my own ( self empowerment ) and if I need to go deeper, I utilize the expertise of a practitioner. Doing self help holds is equivalent to a dusting while a session with a practitioner is like a thorough vacuuming. Both come with great benefits!

The best place to start with self help is with Main Central Vertical . It is energy that flows down the center of the body and up the back and is the birth place of all flows.

MAIN CENTRAL VERTICAL FLOW

Page 12: deerhornshamanic.com · Web viewFlight: A Living, Breathing Document of Consciousness Volume 9 Issue 92, Febr uary, 2020 Articles and excerpts that will inform and inspire! A Letter

(Notes: It is helpful to do this exercise while lying down with the support of pillows or cushions. The Main Central can be done just before bed or upon awakening and do not worry if you fall asleep as the flow will finish on its own.)

Step 1. Place the fingers of your right hand on the top of your head (where they will remain there until step 6.) Next place the fingers of your left hand on your forehead between your eyebrows and hold that position for 2 to 5 minutes or until the pulses you feel at your fingertips synchronize with each other.

Step 2. Now move the left fingertips to the tip of your nose. Hold this position for 2 to 5 minutes.

Step 3. Now move the left fingertips to you sternum (center of your chest between your breasts) and hold for 2 to 5 minutes.

Step 4. Next place your left fingertips on the base of your sternum (center of where your ribs start) just above the stomach and hold for 2 to 5 minutes.

Step 5. Move your left fingers to the top of your pubic bone and hold for 2 to 5 minutes.

Step 6. Keep your left fingertips in place and move your right fingertips to cover your coccyx (tail bone) and hold for 2 to 5 minutes.

In the next article I will explain what we refer to in Jin Shin Jyutsu as the“ depths “ and how you can harmonize each depth by simply holding a finger or toe.

Even before we practice it, enlightenment is there. But usually we understand the practice of zazen and enlightenment as two different things: here is practice, like a pair of glasses, and when we use the practice, like putting the glasses on, we see enlightenmnet. This is the wrong understanding. The glasses themselves are enlightenment, and to put them on is also enlightenment. So whatever you do, or even though you do not do anything, enlightenment is there, always. This is Bodhidharma's understanding of enlightenment.

Reflections from the Shaman's Hut

Can You Mentor Me?

By Trent Deerhorn

I have had this question asked of me so many times throughout my career as a shaman. I always have to ask what they mean by "mentoring?" Because for some, it simply means having them tag along in my sessions and home visits. Well, that is not happening because my clients value privacy. Some think that it has to do with going for coffee and doling out all the medicine teachings that I have had passed down to me. That is not happening either. This is how I make a living. I am not training anyone for free. Some contact me on social media and indicate that they intend to have me mentor them...intend...and then start asking questions that fall under the category of mentorship and think that this is okay. It is not. We have not yet established you as a person I wish to teach and your intention of mentoring under me is not a contract in and of itself. And some expect me to be putting on classes just like one would attend in University, but with much less of a dollar value placed on those classes. Laughable, really.

All of this stems from misconstrued belief systems of what it means to mentor under a shaman. First off, it does not take a weekend. It does not take a week. It does not take a month. It does not take a year. It takes YEARS to begin to grasp the magnitude of what I do as a shaman. It took me years of study to be able to do this. It will, of course, take others just as long, or longer, depending upon their aptitude.

Page 15: deerhornshamanic.com · Web viewFlight: A Living, Breathing Document of Consciousness Volume 9 Issue 92, Febr uary, 2020 Articles and excerpts that will inform and inspire! A Letter

Also, I have to want to mentor a person. I am not going to do so just because they want me to. That is not what it is about. It is about wanting to invest my time and energy into that particular person because I can see potential. If I am not feeling it, then it is not happening. And I do not feel any amount of guilt or shame in saying "no."

Once this is established and both of us are committed to the mentorship, I refuse to call a person my "student" or me their "teacher." We are equals, plain and simple. I just have a lot of knowledge and wisdom from my many, Many, MANY years of experience. And the person I am mentoring has fresh new perspectives. Each are very valuable.

And yes, there is a fee. Of course there is. We live in the twenty-first century, after all. I am not paid in chickens and child brides or anything like that. I am paid in money, just like everyone else. And yes, we begin by working on YOU, the one I am mentoring. We all have to begin with addressing our own healing, so that is where we start. Don't think that it will be all academic theory. No, we dive in and hit the ground running. This scares off most potential learners, because they are afraid of what starts bubbling up.

This is why I very rarely will take on a person to mentor. I don't like to waste my time on people who are not going to follow through. I would rather invest my time in those who are committed to their own personal healing journey and, no matter how scary, are going to look into the looking glass and see themselves for who they truly are. This also means dealing with their shadow self, which is scary to say the least. But it is a necessary part of us, and as long as we are at odds with it we will remain broken and weak.

And although, once mentoring, I do not mind questions regarding various subject matter, if a question then leads the person into projecting their inner imbalance onto myself, we are done. The fact that I have been willing to invest time in a person does not give that person the right to project their issues onto me, and I have no patience for that type of behaviour. It I were to do that to my shamanic teachers they would have skinned me alive. One needs to be grateful that all I will do is end the relationship, because I have also learned how to skin one alive.

Really it is about respect of the process, and that process also includes me because I am mentoring someone, but it also includes that person, which is why I never call them my "student." Those terms indicate a hierarchy that I do not buy into. And we should not need that in order to have respect.

Over the years there have been a few people who have said to others, "The only problem I have with Trent is that he is not willing to teach anyone." Most of these people have never even asked me. A couple of them I have said, "no" to. That does not mean that I don't teach anyone. It means that I choose those I am willing to invest my time into. That is my choice to make, not anyone else's.

HOME FOR THE SOLSTICESBy Ave Riddler

For three years now I have been blessed enough to spend both the winter and summer solstices at a very magical place, Ancient Spirals Retreat Center. I have gathered with people that are healers, witches, seekers, spiritualists, artists, and so much more. There’s music, laughter, food, sharing, connecting, and being fully present with others.

The summer visit is when we dance and sing, gathered outside in circles to honor the longest day and shortest night. While the winter visit tends to be more a meditative retreat about inner journeying, where we gather mostly indoors to warm our spirits, share our songs, in honor of the shortest day and longest night. The people may not be the same, and the focus of the events are drastically different, but there is something to this…there is just something magical and right about coming to this sacred space, holding a place in those circles, on these special times of the year.

Toon Town’s Pagan Summer Fest has been going on for 17 years, will be 18 this summer, and only FIVE of those years were hosted at different locations, places other than Ancient Spirals. I feel like Fest is home there. Fest is my baby, there is a lot of planning and laboring involved, I tend to be a whirl of activity once there, but it is absolutely one of the greatest blessings in my life. I have met some of the most amazing people, and gained some wonderful friendships because of this festival. It has faced its fair share or trials, and has only improved as a result. A lot happens at Fest, though we do try to remain outside for much of the event, dancing under the vast and open sky, then gathering around the fire pit as the sun sets, sharing with each other.

The winter event is not one of my labors, and has been going on for longer than I have been attending. The first time I went, was only three years ago, I really shouldn’t have made the drive there, hadn’t planned on going, knew the event was happening, but had to work in the morning. Yet as I started heading home, I found myself taking the turns and roads that led me to the home of fest. I didn’t stay long that year, the next year though I made it part of my plans for the night, and went out knowing I would stay over. I was able to be more present, but again

Page 17: deerhornshamanic.com · Web viewFlight: A Living, Breathing Document of Consciousness Volume 9 Issue 92, Febr uary, 2020 Articles and excerpts that will inform and inspire! A Letter

had to work the next day, so left well before those there woke, heck some were still AWAKE! This year I was able to attend more, stay longer, and the vibe was restive and restorative. Meditations and dancing inside a room with a fire in the fire place, but this year we gathered outside by the fire pit and danced as the sun set. Magic.

I am grateful for that magic, those circles, the connectivity and community. And that sacred space where if you listen closely you can hear the echo of all the other circles that call it home.

The word "inspiration" means to fill with spirit. Spirits are always trying to communicate to us. They do so by imposing their thoughts into our consciousness. I call it mind-to-mind communication. Many times we are inspired by spirits to take a particular action. When our psychic centers are open, we become clearer channels for spirit transmission.

Ask the Shaman: With Trent Deerhorn

Q: I have a fiancé who is wonderful in many ways. I have noticed, however, that often with a compliment he will say something like, “You are doing really well with that, and there is still some room for improvement to make it even better.” This drives me crazy because I just feel that men too often dictate what women can and cannot do and how we should and should not feel about ourselves. I am curious about your thoughts on a behavior such as this?

A: You may not recognize this, but you actually have quite the gem there for a fiancé. If the roles were reversed, would you not want to know that you trust him enough to be able to encourage him to

continue to grow and improve? Well, he is trusting you enough to know that he can encourage you to grow and improve. This has NOTHING to do with men dictating what women can or cannot do or how they should feel about themselves. This has EVERYTHING to do with a man who is wanting to support you and lift you up, encouraging you to be the best you that you can possibly be. He is not just blowing air up your skirts with praises and flattery. He is being REAL. I would like to suggest that you marry that man NOW before someone else scoops him up!

I liked your personal explanation about being a Shaman and your name etc. I love the energy of your name Deerhorn (which is why I call you that rather than Trent).

It is hard for some people to understand that Spirit names are not something we just choose but they are given to us, that it is something beyond the physical (thus it being a Spirit name duh! LOL).
