WITH “JERSEY BOYS” TRIBUTE

On Friday, November 20th, it was the 50th day at Wilson School.  Students in Mrs. Puzzo’s class celebrated by dressing up as if life were back in the nifty fifties.  Students participated in a “Phonics Study” using lyrics to a popular song “Rag Doll” by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.  To begin the lesson, students and teacher discussed the importance of phonics.  Going into deeper discussion regarding knowing our letters and sounds and what happens when sounds blend together.  Some patterns learned in First Grade were –ll, -ss, -tt, ch-, sh-, th-, gl-, and oo.  Sight words learned in First Grade were should, could, always, say.  First Graders also practiced contractions such as I’d, won’t, she’s, and can’t.  Before listening to the song, students read each lyric.  After reading it in its entirety, students were able to sing along.  Following the song, teacher and students identified rhyming words and discussed words they knew rhymed.  To close the lesson, students proceeded back to their seats to create their “Jersey Kids Jukebox”.  Students glued lyrics onto one side of the jukebox.  On the other the other side, students demonstrated word knowledge by correctly writing 50 words.  “Oh What a Day” it was in Mrs. Puzzo’s class.

The SUES Student Ambassadors are currently in the process of organizing a fall food drive to benefit both the Sayreville Care and Share and St. Vincent DePaul food banks here in town. All of our elementary schools are again able participate in collecting food with SUES. The food drive will run from October through November 15th with a tentative pick up date for the week of November 16th.

We are proud of our Wilson students for their contributions and service to the community. Character begins at home. At Wilson we also believe that “Education plus Character is the real goal of Education.” Martin Luther King.
