Admin Team Notes

Denis

I am particularly jazzed about the Soundings concerts coming up in a few days (Saturday and Sunday - info in this newsletter). It would be so great to see lots of you there! Tickets are easily (and safely) available on-line here

Stay warm, everyone!

Weather permitting - we’ll be singing together for one more week and then off for the Christmas break. It feel like the songs for the January concert are all coming together and sounding good. There will be posters to put up in January and of course, tickets to buy for our friends and families. Some of you have asked how long concert tickets will be available and the answer is….right up until the days of the concerts – unless we are sold out.

See you all next week.

New:   corrected Fiddler On The Roof Singers Needed! (GHC goes off-Broadway)

Last year, a sing-along Fiddler on the Roof was put on at the Synagogue on Blanshard Street.

The show was sold out, and was a big hit!  This year, it is happening again, on Sunday March 27 26, afternoon, and Monday March 28 27, evening.

Director Zelda Dean approached the choir, with the invitation that we provide 20 strong singers for the 2 shows, who could learn the 7 main songs, and sing them with confidence from one of the balconies, as a way of supporting the audience to sing along as well.  One half of the proceeds from both shows will be donated to The Caia Connection, the local Charity that supports our projects in Mozambique.

Cathy Roper Baker and I (Shivon) will be leading several rehearsals over the next few months, and there will be one or two rehearsals at the venue with the band (The Klez) closer to show time. The songs are easily learned from YouTube versions, especially if you are already somewhat familiar with them.

Please email [email protected] to let me know if you are interested.

MUSIC SAMPLERS

I will be selling my seasonal music compilations again at every GHC practice from now until the break.  I am a Yuletide music historian and folklorist. These are compilation CDs with detailed interpretive liner notes focused on various seasonal themes.  Some of them feature songs about the birth of Jesus, the angels, shepherds etc, while others have songs related to the secular celebration of the Christmas holidays.  Some, like this year’s new sampler, celebrate the Winter Solstice, not Christmas.  See detailed descriptions here.  Each 78 minute (or longer) CD features a wide variety of performers and styles of music, carefully selected and organized to reward active listening. The musical selections are drawn from my extensive collection of recordings (many of which are out-of-print).

I request a donation of $15 each – $5 for people on low income.

ALL of the proceeds are donated to the Power of Hope and to the Vancouver Island Marmot Recovery Foundation.

GHC Home Sectionals

For fun and practice…Host A Home Sectional!  (During our holiday break or in January)

Next week’s Community Issue is the last newsletter before the holiday break. If possible it would be excellent to have your home sectional listed in it!

Sectional = Participants from one sectionCross Sectional = Members of all 4 sections in relatively equal numbers per section (8 to 20 total) is best.

Sectionals, and Cross Sectionals, hosted in members’ homes (or residential buildings’ social rooms) are a very enjoyable ways to practice our parts and to get to know each other better. Including a finger food, or full meal deal, pot-luck as part of a social time also goes down well.

Usually sectional hosts extend an open invitation and usually a half dozen to a couple of dozen singers will participate. If space is limited a first responder maximum number can be specified.

Cross sectional hosts usually specify 3 to 5 people per section to get a good balance and to maximize the ability of everybody to hear all the parts clearly.

Denis and Shivon will get to as many of the sectionals as they can but the cross-sectionals are usually directed either by a capable member volunteer or co-operatively by the participants.

If Denis or Shivon are not participating you can either:

use a keyboard, guitar or other means of giving starting notes if you, or you have someone, who knows how (if you don’t know how ask around in your section for someone who does).~ or ~

sing along to the appropriate parts files from our web site played either via a computer or downloaded to a suitable device or played using one of our Practice CDs.

Just pick a date and time that works for you, let me know and I will:

1. add your sectional to the “Home Sectional Invitations” list in the appropriate issues of the newsletter

2. post your invitation in our site’s Choir Life: Calendar

3. email a special advance announcement (for sectionals but not cross sectionals) to everyone in your section and email you a call list of names and phone numbers for members of your section who are not on email.

Our last choir night before the holiday break is Thursday Dec. 15 and we start up again Jan. 2

If you are interested but want some questions answered, or concerns addressed, feel free to call me at 920-4160 (9 to 9 weekdays).

~ Bill
