Monster Noir is a web comic written and illustrated by Third Year Animation student Jalen Rose. The web comic follows the story of three characters living in a Neo Noir 1950’s New York setting, the twist being the world is inhabited by monstrous creatures of all different shapes and sizes, some friendly and others not so much. Our heroes are none other than the Detective Duo Jalen Rose (Persona of the author/writer) and James L Buxton VII (Persona of the author’s friend and co-writer) and their informative friend Hollie C (Persona of author’s friend and co-writer.)

The web comic aims to look more into the ‘anti-hero’ side of comics, our protagonists might be fighting villains that are truly evil but they themselves, do not follow conventional heroic qualities such as morality. We see our protagonists delve into Black Market dealings, Impersonation of an Officer of the law and a few other underhanded and unconventional ways of overcoming issues.

Jalen has worked hard to attempt to create a believable world and begin to build a prologue to his characters meetings within his first fifteen pages. He aims to continue the series into many different chapters that will introduce even more weird and wild characters and develop his current characters and their bond even more.

Monster Noir is a web comic written and illustrated by Jalen Rose and is set in a neo noir 1950s world in which monsters from our dreams and nightmares came to life and lived beside us. We follow the stories of a Detective Duo Jalen Rose and James L Buxton VII and their informative friend Hollie C. Constantly on the run from all manner of dangerous, disturbing and disgusting monsters, Jalen and friends attempt to save their city from a dark underground crime syndicate all while attempting to make friends with the local law enforcement in between their multiple arrests.

Jalen Rose Illustrator and Writer

Jalen grew up in East Ham, London and then moved when still young to Hadleigh, East Anglia. While studying at Highschool Jalen found his passion for art and was constantly doodling over everything he could find and no matter what the lesson Jalen would somehow find a way to fit drawing into it. After Highschool Jalen went on to study Fine Art, Graphic Design and Film Studies at Suffolk One College in Ipswich. Even though Jalen still enjoyed illustration and artistic media, he did find it hard to adjust to the college and suffered grade wise due to this. Even though he suffered slightly Jalen was able to progress to University and decide to focus on animation as he had a broad range of ideas he wanted to bring to life. Chosing The University Of Wolverhampton to study at, Jalen started in 2013 and is now in his final year and has taken a completely different path then originally expected.

Througout his years studying at Wolves University, Jalen discovered his artistic talent shone brighter when focusing on character design and storyboarding work. Deciding this was where he would be able to expertise in, Jalen took the path of becoming an illustrator/storyboard artist and would create a portfolio of work based on this element. However whilst working on his animation work Jalen had been creating a small side project which he wanted to come to fuition. This project was Monster Noir and with a little help from his tutors he was able to create a porfolio revolving around this project.

James and Jalen met in highschool over eight years ago and became fast friends through their interests. They would usually come up with silly stories together and then Jalen would doodle them out, this is how they would eventually come out with ideas for Monster Noir. James has always been a huge inspiration to Jalen’s work and will continue to be as Monster Noir continues on.

Jalen met Hollie while in the process of creating Monster Noir, they spoke online daily with a few other friends and Jalen drew a lot of inspiration from their converstations. Just like James, Hollie continues to be a huge inspiration to Jalen and Monster Noir.

1. How long does the process take between thinking up a page and bringing it to life?

When it comes to creating a page from scratch, I go through a few different stages of scripting, roughing out the panels, sketching, line work, colour and then the lighting/shading. This can either a minimum of a few hours or up to two days, it really depends on what is included on the page e.g. how many panels, how many characters to be drawn etc.

2. How did Monster Noir become an idea?

Monster Noir has always been an idea of mine in some shape or form. It originally took form of a small series I wanted to create called ‘RooMMates’ which was to be a weekly animation series telling a story about personas of friends and myself. As I continued working on ideas for that series, it kind of just spawned this series which I feel is more thought out and understandable.

3. What software’s do you use for your web comic?

Originally I used a mix of Paint Tool Sai and Photoshop, I then found it easier to focus using only Photoshop. I also use a mix of texture packs for some of the clothing and the film grain over the comic itself.

4. What inspired you to do a web comic?

Well I have always loved comics and have collected them for quite a few years now and I guess it’s a mix of my love of comics and my illustrator skills that really just brought it to life in that way. I would love to have comic printed in a physical form someday though.

5. What inspires you about the setting and time period of Monster Noir?



Read Monster Noir here: monsternoircomic.tumblr.comWell I really like the 50’s noir era of film and always have admired the idea being taken into different media such as comics and games. I also really love the detective theme and what I can do with it, along with the idea of reinventing a few things from that time period such as what sort of machinery would be around or maybe what sort of weapons people could have.

6. Are there a lot of changes made to the pages while designing them?

Of course, I don’t think I have ever gone through a creation process of a page without changing it a few times. Sometimes I tweak one or two little things like a characters position or what they are saying and other times it’s been as serious as re doing the whole page.

7. How many Chapters are planned for the series?

At the moment I have roughly ten. I hope to get all ten done before I plan anything else, but I would love to do more after those.

8. What inspired/inspires your art style?

Well my art style came from me just doodling the things I love. I have always been heavily influenced by characters with thick line work and over exaggerated features and I try to portray that as much as I can. When it comes to artists that inspire me, I would have to say Skottie Young and Beast Pop. Both awesome artists that have some amazing work that seriously drives me to work harder.

9. Do you feel your skills have progressed as you have worked on this project?

Definitely. I have also felt much more confident in my work than I used to. I feel that I can continue to improve while working on this project as well as others. It has also motivated me to draw things I have never been proficient in drawing, such as buildings and cars.

10.Who is your favourite character in the series so far?

Based on the current pages that have been launched: Bombzai. I really enjoyed designing him and his personality and there is so much more of him to come.
