It will contribute to your portfolio which will form the basis of assessment for this module. Context This project is intended to develop your making skills and your ability to transform materials from 2D to 3D form. The project should also develop your sensitivities in handling the subtler qualities of products – in this case the quality of light. Assignment You will be given a sheet of semi-translucent polypropylene (PP). PP has been used in the design of lamps because sheet material can be transformed into 3D forms through simple means – cutting, folding and combining elements. The material also works well to diffuse light. Using this material and a simple, switched light fitting you should create a lamp, which focuses on the following: - The transformation from 2D to 3D through clever manipulation of the material – cutting, folding and fastening (if needed, you may use mechanical fastenings but no glue) - The quality of the light and shadows produced by the light. Although we will reward the aesthetic qualities of the lamp itself, and, in particular, the quality of making, the primary focus of this project is on the quality of the light and shadows produced by the lamp. As part of developing your final design, you should carry out multiple experiments (using, for example, paper, card and a torch). Shadowplay This project is one of several assignments that makeup this module of study. It will contribute to your portfolio which will formthe basis of assessment for this module.

Context

This project is intended to develop your making skills and your ability to transform materials from 2D to 3D form. The project should also develop your sensitivities in handling the subtler qualities of products – in this case the quality of light.

Assignment

You will be given a sheet of semi-translucent polypropylene (PP). PP has been used in the design of lamps because sheet material can be transformed into 3D forms through simple means – cutting, folding and combining elements. The material also works well to diffuse light.

Using this material and a simple, switched light fitting you should create a lamp, which focuses on the following:

- The transformation from 2D to 3D through clever manipulation of the material – cutting, folding and fastening (if needed, you may use mechanical fastenings but no glue)

- The quality of the light and shadows produced by the light.

Although we will reward the aesthetic qualities of the lamp itself, and, in particular, the quality of making, the primary focus of this project is on the quality of the light and shadows produced by the lamp.

As part of developing your final design, you should carry out multiple experiments (using, for example, paper, card and a torch).

Final Hand-In

The completed lamp;

3 x A3 development boards. These should show, in photographs, the numerous experiments you have carried out as part of the development work. You should also show the steps involved in transforming the final concept from the 2D sheet to the assembled lamp. One board should be dedicated to photographs of the final lamp and the shadows it casts.

A brief description of your concept can be included. This should be no more than 100 words (Note: one mark will be deducted for each word over this limit).

Research and idea generation (25%)

Ingenuity and creativity as evidenced in your final design (25%)

Quality of making (25%)

Quality of presentation and communication of concept (25%)
