Marc Brew company pull back the sheets on exhausted embraces and near misses in the night. Inspired by JM Whilstler’s Nocturne, an exquisite contemporary dance quartet draw you into the unseen dreams of cities at dusk.

Nocturne was conceived and created by choreographer Marc Brew in collaboration with designer-dramaturg Luke Pell. With original music from composer Gary Lloyd which features recording of cello performed by Luke Moore and prose (written by Luke Pell) spoke by Iain Banks, author of the Wasp Factory.

InformationNocturne was commissioned for Liberty Festival in Trafalgar Square 2008 as a short outdoor duet. In 2009, it was developed with thanks to commissions from Greenwich and Docklands International Festival and the Without Walls Street Arts Consortium.

Four dancers perform this dynamic work with two specially built double beds. The day to day of couples and domesticity, unfolds into an evening of restless dreams with original commissioned music by composer Gary Lloyd (recently collaborated with writer Iain Banks).

Touring across the UK, Nocturne brings inclusive high quality performance to new audiences. The work has been created to be versatile for viewing in unusual spaces and as such is suitable for outdoor courtyard spaces, indoor atrium spaces and theatre spaces with raked seating.

The DancersMarc Brew

Marc Brew has been working in the UK and Internationally for the past 17 years as a dancer, choreographer and teacher; with the Australian Ballet Company, the State Theatre Ballet Company of South Africa, Infinity Dance Theatre in New York, and for 5 years with CandoCo Dance Company. He was a guest performer and media spokesperson for the London Handover Ceremony for the Beijing Olympics and Paralympic Games Closing Ceremony 2008.

Since 2001 Marc has been dedicating time to his own choreography with Marc Brew Company and was featured by Time Out Magazine as the best of the new breed of London’s Rising Dance Talent. Recent works have included commissions by DadaFest International, Velcro Dance Company, Candoco Dance Company, Scottish Dance Theatre, Without Walls Consortium, Greenwich and Docklands International Festival for Liberty Festival at Trafalgar Square, East London Dance for The Big Chair Dance as part of Big Dance 2008, London Contemporary Dance School Graduation Dance Season, and a new series of site specific interventions Turning the Inside Out for the InTransit Festival 2008 in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. Marc was also choreographer for the fashion industry's ultimate night of celebration the British Fashion Awards 2009. Theatre credits include; Graeae Theatre Company’s The Rhinestone Rollers, National Theatre of Scotland’s Mary Queen Of Scot’s Got Her Head Chopped Off and Our Teacher’s a Troll, Dundee Rep Theatre’s productions of Elephant Man and their 2010 Christmas show Sleeping Beauty.

He attended DanceEast’s international Rural Retreat for future leaders in January 2008 and subsequently received a bursary for a placement with Scottish Dance Theatre through the Cultural Leadership Programme. In 2010 he was the Associate Director Fellow with Scottish Dance Theatre, where he co-directed NQR, currently touring around the UK as a part of active repertory. Marc’s recent Unlimited Commission Fusional Fragments was in partnership with DanceEast. The creation of this work has been funded by the Unlimited programme that is part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

Corey Baker

Born in Christchurch, New Zealand, Corey took to the stage at a young age performing in many West End shows including Cats, the southern hemispheres premier of Witches of Eastwick, and A Chorus Line. He began his classical training at the International Ballet Academy of New Zealand, graduating in 2008 from the Ballettschule Theater Basel in Switzerland, Corey completed with a Diploma in Dance. In 2009 Corey danced for the Theatre Basel Ballet Company under the direction of Richard Wherlock in Basel, Switzerland- repertoire includes work from Christopher Bruce, Cathy Marston, Patrick Delcroix. In January 2010 Corey joined “BalletBoyz Dance Company under the direction of Michael Nunn and William Trevitt, repertoire from choreographers Russell Maliphant, Freddie Opoku Addaie, and William Forsythe. Corey is now working with Choreographer Darren Ellis with Springs Dance Company on a New Production touring 2011/2012. Corey is also dancing with Justine Reeve and the Marc Brew Company for performances and touring during 2011

Bettina Carpi

Bettina was born and grew up in Bern where she began her dance training with Edith Langer Tolnay. Taking part in the yearly dance- and musical- performances instilled a big love and passion for dance, theatre and performance and for communicating ideas through movement and play.

In 1996 Bettina left to train in London at the London School of Contemporary Dance. Since graduating she has worked with various choreographers and companies, amongst them Arthur Pita, Annie Lok, Jasmin Vardimon, Felix Ruckert, Bread Dance Theatre Company, Neil Fisher, Marc Brew and Joe Moran and dancers. For the last 8 years Bettina has been a member of CandoCo Dance Company, performing, teaching, creating and touring work with numerous choreographers. Bettina is now a freelance dance artist and teacher living in London

Rebecca Evans

Rebecca began her training in the United States with the Rochester City Ballet. She furthered her Ballet and Contemporary training at the University of Iowa. She then hopped the pond and completed her final year at the Laban Centre, gaining a Professional Degree in Dance Studies and a BFA with honors from University of Iowa . Since graduating Rebecca has been busy performing in London for numerous companies, including IJAD Dance Company, Korsnes Kompani, Sentient Dogs, Ffin Dance and in Berlin dancing for Patrick King in ‘Ambrosia’. She participated in Dancelines 2011 and recently spent the last couple months exploring dance in South Korea. Spending time with Korea National Contemporary Dance Company and teaching at Seoul Tanz Station. She is excited to be joining Marc Brew Company for a second season.
