Hello everyone! We just concluded our fourth golf tournament of 2005 at the beautiful Summitpointe Golf Course in Milpitas. Most of our players participating in this golf outing were exposed to the uneven terrain and fast putting greens throughout the course. If your drives weren’t in the fairway you had great difficulty in scoring well at this golf course! This led to many high scores for the majority of our players.

Thanks go out to Santi Arrieta for sponsoring this tournament and the 50 golfers who participated. Congratulations go out to the following winners:

Our Match Play tournament is going forward with many exciting and close fought matches. Congratulations to all of the winners! As a result of Tony’s net score (68) he will also receive a bye at our next Match Play tournament scheduled in August. Great job Tony!

During this golf tournament someone (identity unknown) improperly signed the name of another player on two of the Par 3 holes. This led to some confusion especially when the player had not even reached the Par 3 hole to play. In future tournaments please refrain from “joking around” and signing someone else’s name to the Par 3 marking sheets. Your consideration in this matter is greatly appreciated.

Our next golf tournament will be the Dr. Mario Borja Memorial/Seven Lakes tournament scheduled for Sunday, June 12, 2005 at 1:00 p.m., which will be held at the Monarch Bay Golf Course in San Leandro. This will be a shotgun start! We expect over 100 players participating in this annual golf tournament. It will include lunch and dinner. We always have a great time at this golf event.

The Mabuhay Golf Club has a total of 93 active members as of April and this column will continue to monitor voluntary postings of scores by the members until we can encourage other members to do the same. The USGA/NCGA Handicap System requires the posting of ADJUSTED scores by every member in accordance with the Equitable Stroke Control. For the benefit of all members and especially those who asked why their scores posted and reported to the NCGA are lower than their actual tournament scores, section 4-3 of the USGA/NCGA Handicap Manual provides:

"The Equitable Stroke Control (ESC) is the downward adjustment of individual hole scores for handicap purposes in order to make handicaps more representative of a player's potential ability. ESC sets a maximum number that a player can post on any hole depending on the player's course Handicap. ESC is used only when a player's actual score exceeds his maximum number based on the table below:"
