Course Description— Introductory Spanish taught through TPR Storytelling®. A beginning Spanish course aimed at the rapid achievement of a beginning level of proficiency through interesting reading, engaging storytelling and personalized discussions. Students can expect to acquire the 100 highest frequency words in Spanish through stories and action. There is no pressure to speak or perform. This class is popular with tourists, travelers, elementary school teachers, health professional, natural health care practitioners, business professionals and people who took Spanish in high school years ago but can't speak a word today. Students are invited to take this class more than once because although the curriculum changes each time, the pace will always stay comfortable so that your experience is effortless and fun. Students with previous Spanish exposure are guided through the process of reactivating latent vocabulary. True beginners are guided through the process of beginning language acquisition in a low pressure, low-stress environment.Course Objectives—Students will be expected to participate, ask questions, answer questions, apply higher level thinking skills to the reading of a reader and oral stories, co-create live stories and write and tell stories in Spanish. 15 hours of reading and study outside of class is required.

Course Content—Beginning, high frequency vocabulary, action words, complex sentence structure in the present and past tenses combined in stories. Reading material based on the 100 highest frequency vocabulary words in Spanish and 100 English cognates. Course content includes multiple stories using this set of vocabulary words and common grammatical structures.

Course Activities—1. TPR (Total Physical Response) – responding to oral commands physically, non-verbally and with one word answers2. TPRS (Teaching Proficiency Through Reading and Storytelling)Storytelling involving questions regarding the plot and details that are answered by the students. Personalized, informal questions regarding the students in the class.Reading short readings, extended readings and Las Aventuras de Isabela, a 10 chapter simple reader using discussion, translation and independent reading. Returnees to the class are provided with A Carlos no le gusta México, a second simple reader in the same series.Writing stories in Spanish based on the vocabulary and grammatical structures taught in the class.Telling stories to classmates. Free Voluntary Reading of children’s books. Reader’s Theater

Required Texts, Readings, and Instructional Resources—Handouts from Fluency Fast Language Classes; Las Aventuras de Isabela novella

Expectations—Students will be expected to listen, participate, ask questions, take notes as necessary, act in stories, participate physically, demonstrate comprehension and apply their acquisition of the language to the reading selections and book. Students will be expected to complete a pre and post test and a writing assignment as well as to read the novel. For credit based on 30 hours of contact time, additional work is required.

Evaluation—Students will complete a pre-test, a writing assignment and will keep a reading and listening log. Students will be given opportunities to practice speaking. . Participation = 50%, writing assignment = 10%, reading = 30%, post-test= 10%.

Notes on class differentiation: This class can be taken multiple times. Each curriculum is entirely different.

Each class uses a different set of stories, vocabulary, structures and readers. Students can take the beginning courses up to 4 times, at which point they will want to begin our intermediate series.

What YOU must know about acquiring a language through TPRS in order to be successful:

1. There is no such thing as a person who isn’t good at learning languages.

2. If you’ve taken language classes before, you may have been forcing your brain to function in a way it was never designed to. That was not the fault of your brain.

3. The trick to acquiring another language is ridiculously simple:You must hear a lot of the language and you must completely, entirely, totally, 100% understand what is being said. In fact…. if you’re doing it right… it feels effortless. It feels involuntary.

4. You must be relaxed and not feel pressured to speak or perform. There’s no need to try to repeat what you hear. Just concentrate on trying to understand. Stop me and ask for translation or to slow down.

5. Turn off the part of your brain that wants to turn this into work…. wants to memorize… wants to study… wants to analyze…. wants to cram information into the short term memory instead of the long-term memory….

6. To do that you must :A. Have fun.B. Listen. Be aware of when your attention wanders and think of ways that you can contribute details to the story.C. Stop and signal me whenever you don’t understand even one word.D. Laugh. It releases endorphins that contribute to long term retention. Plus… it’s supposed to be funny.G. Take breaks and move around. A little physical movement makes the brain dump feel-good chemicals into the body that also increase long-term memory.H. Read, read and re-read. As you read you’ll understand more and more. Use the vocab list, but don’t look everything up in a dictionary.
