GROUNDWATER

Page 13: stjohnsnarraweena.weebly.com · Web viewPlease complete 1 English box, 1 Maths box and 1 Other activity box from the grid each day. Share your work from each activity with your teacher

When water falls as rain or hail or snow, it falls into oceans, down mountains, into rivers, lakes, lagoons, ponds, billabongs and streams.

The water you can see sitting on top of the ground is called surface water. It is sitting on the surface of the land.

Water also seeps down into the dirt, past the rocks, pebbles and leaves, deep into the soil and becomes groundwater. This is because it is under the ground. It has soaked deep below into the ground where we cannot see it.

Sometimes you may see water spurting out of the ground. This is called a ‘spring.’

Animals sometimes dig tunnels and burrow deep down under the ground to find this water. Plants grow long roots to find groundwater. People dig big wells to find this water too.

We should always protect our water supply and keep it clean for all people, animals and plants to use.
