Task 3:

Orthodox Verses Reform

Read through the sources of information and complete the T diagram about Orthodox and Reform Jews.Judaism is a very old religion. Abraham, the father of the Jews lived almost 4000 years ago! The Jewish Bible was finished almost 2000 years ago, and much of it was written 1000 years before that! Jews have a hard choice to make. How much of their old religion should they keep? How much should change in line with society? Some Jews follow all of the teachings in the Torah and worship in the traditional way. Orthodox Jews hold very firmly to the teachings of the Torah, or the Law, which was given to Moses by God on Mount Sinai. In the UK, nine out of every ten Jews are Orthodox. However, in the 19th century, some Jews began to think differently and these became

known as Reform or Liberal Jews. Reform or Liberal Jews believe that some rules in the Torah are out of date, and that Judaism should “adapt” its practices to reflect modern society. There are 3 important differences between Orthodox and Reform Jews:Their attitude towards the Torah is very different. Orthodox Jews believe it is God’s greatest gift to humankind. It is God’s word that cannot be altered in any way. Reform Jews believe that it was God’s word when it was first given, but parts of the Torah no longer apply today. The way in which the Sabbath Day is kept is very different. On this day, orthodox Jews do

not prepare or cook food, use their own cars or light a fire. Reform Jews do not keep these laws. The way that women are viewed is very different. In orthodox synagogues, only men can read from the Torah in public, take part in services, or become rabbis. In Reform synagogues, women can take part in services and there are women rabbis.

The three main differences:

Move with the times?
