Hipswell Parish (www.hipswellparish.org.uk ) St Cuthbert’s, Colburn & St John’s, Hipswell, both aim to be: A warm, welcoming church; open to the wider community; confident in Jesus’ love and presence.” January 5 th , 2020: Epiphany Sunday Today we celebrate the arrival of the Magi – the Middle-eastern astrologers, who had travelled from Central Asia, possibly for months, following the special star that would finally lead them to Jesus the Christ child. The fact that they were willing to risk everything, to take on such a dangerous journey, is pretty amazing. Wonderfully, though, their search is fully rewarded, and they are granted the life- transforming privilege of meeting the Saviour of the world. As has been said on so many occasions, faith could readily be spelled ‘RISK’. How often, though, even as Christians, we prove to be pretty risk-averse. Often we’re afraid to step out into new ventures, even when we sense that Jesus might be inviting us to ‘get out of the boat’ and walk towards him. I wonder… What might Jesus be calling you into this year? How willing will you prove to be in taking risks in order to follow him? For many of us, this next year looks set to be an ‘exciting’ one, with plenty of challenge! But our loving Father goes before us, and He promises that He will see us through! Ring out, Wild Bells (Alfred, Lord Tennyson) Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky, The flying cloud, the frosty light: The year is dying in the night; Ring out, wild bells, and let him die. Ring out the old, ring in the new, Ring, happy bells, across the snow: The year is going, let him go; Ring out the false, ring in the true. Ring out the grief that saps the mind For those that here we see no more; Ring out the feud of rich and poor, Ring in redress to all mankind. Ring out a slowly dying cause, And ancient forms of party strife; Ring in the nobler modes of life, With sweeter manners, purer laws. Ring out the want, the care, the sin, The faithless coldness of the times; Ring out, ring out my mournful rhymes But ring the fuller minstrel in. Ring out false pride in place and blood, The civic slander and the spite; Ring in the love of truth and right, Ring in the common love of good. Ring out old shapes of foul disease; Ring out the narrowing lust of gold; Ring out the thousand wars of old, Ring in the thousand years of peace. Ring in the valiant man and free, The larger heart, the kindlier hand; Ring out the darkness of the land, Ring in the Christ that is to be.
