Today’s Scripture Reading:

Romans 8:1-2 (ESV)1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.2 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you[b] free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.

Pastor’s Notes:

1. WE ARE FREE FROM SIN’S POWER

Romans 8:2

“For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death”. – Romans 8:2 (ESV)

Think of the power of sin on your life. It is trying to drag you down, trying to get you to follow the opposite of God’s will for your life – and it would

appear that it controls you. But through the power of the Holy Spirit we can pull away from the sin that has dominated our lives. We are free from sin’s power both in the sense that we can control it, and when we don’t control it we are still forgiven for it. God expects us to live by His standards, He equips us to live by His standards. But like any good Father, even when we fall short of the standards He shows us the way to get back on track again and He makes us whole.

2. WE ARE FREE FROM SIN’S PENALTY

Romans 6:23a;

“For the wages of sin is death”. – Romans 6:23a (ESV)

The penalty was paid, but not by us.

Romans 3:23-24;

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus”. – Romans 3:23-24 (ESV)

Romans 5:8-9;

“God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God”. – Romans 5:8-9 (ESV)

Romans 8:1

“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus”. – Romans 8:1 (ESV)

Our lives have been saved by God and there is no way we can pay Him back for that – the price is beyond anything we will ever have to offer. But what we can do is change the way we live to please Him.

3. WE ARE FREE TO LIVE BY THE SPIRIT

Romans 8:3b-4

“By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit”. – Romans 8:3b-4 (ESV)

Before becoming a Christ Follower we had no choice – we were enslaved by the sinful nature and had no real power to overcome. As Christians we now have a choice – we can either follow the sinful nature or we can follow the Holy Spirit. It is up to us to choose what we will, but we know that only one choice is acceptable to this great God who has given Himself completely on our behalf.
