Dear Friends of St George’s,

September is a summer month, but it gently leads us into Autumn. There are still warm days, but the light is beginning to fade and the temperature begins to fall. Children return to school and the focus begins on the long dark days ahead. Unfortunately, we are reminded of it earlier and earlier with Halloween and Christmas decorations already in the shops. Selfridges caused a storm by opening their Christmas shop in July during the heatwave and 149 days early! It begs the question about the meaning of such important events when commercialism taints everything and often the meaning is lost. Interestingly, as more and more people start to question where things come from, the impact on the environment and on the people who produce the goods and even their need for whatever it is that they are buying; will this be the shift from the need to own more and more and to refocus on the simple pleasures, to experience and to live rather than to work and to own. Making a life should come before making a living or to quote Winston Churchill “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give”. Quite an apt quote when you consider the church and our Christian community. For many of us the life of St Georges is as much about what we receive as what we give and perhaps that’s the balance that keeps us involved.

Church News – your Church Wardens had a meeting with Archdeacon Elizabeth in August and we are awaiting comments on our parish profile. A new joint post has been proposed, and the PCC will discuss this at length at their next meeting on Monday 9th September. It still involves the church receiving ‘half’ a priest, but it could mean that we can advertise soon and hopefully have a priest in post by the spring of 2020. However, considering the church is a slow moving monolith, let’s not get too excited just yet. We will as ever, keep you informed of progress.

Whatever September has in store for you, whether it is new beginnings or a continuum of the existing, may God bless you as you go through your life’s journey.

Best Wishes

Carolyn and BeverleyChurch Wardens

handicrafts, candles. Help will be needed to put up tables and on the day run stalls and games.

As the new school year is beginning- a reminderSchool Applications.

We have had several queries about C of E school application forms since Fr Jenkins retired. The process remains as it always has, but the Churchwardens now have the responsibility of completing the paperwork. Applications run on a points system and priority will be given to parents and children who regularly attend church. The priority list for St Thomas of Canterbury School is displayed in our church porch and states that those who have attended St George’s twice a month for the past 2 years will be considered first. Other local C of E schools follow a similar criterion and also ask questions about the contribution the family make to church life, e.g. helping with Sunday School and fundraising events. We keep an informal register of attendees each week as we see lots of different faces and would never be able to remember everyone.

St George’s has always welcomed parents and children through its doors, and we hope you will enjoy being part of our church family regardless of school applications. Like any family or friendship, the more you put in, the more you get out of it – come and worship with us and help us keep St George’s
