At 7:00 we will gather in our groups and get acquainted or reacquainted with our small-group members and start our journey into our book study. I am very excited about this year’s book! With help from Kathy Stockdale I think we have a fantastic book and video study picked out for this year. It is called “Love Does: Discover a secretly incredible life in an ordinary world.”

In Love Does, a five-session video-based small group study, you will discover the whimsy of New York Times best-selling author Bob Goff through a sometimes humorous, thought-provoking, meaningful lesson that makes faith in God simple and real.

As a college student, Bob spent 16 days in the Pacific Ocean with five guys and a crate of canned meat. As a father, he took his kids on a world tour to eat ice cream with heads of state. He made friends in Uganda, and they liked him so much he became the Ugandan consul. He pursued his wife for three years before she agreed to date him. His grades weren't good enough to get into law school, so he sat on a bench outside the Dean’s office for seven days until they finally let him enroll.

Bob Goff has become something of a legend, and his friends consider him the world's best-kept secret. Those same friends have long insisted he write a book. You will discover the paradigm shifts, musings, and stories from one of the world’s most delightfully engaging and winsome people. What fuels Bob’s impact? Love. But it's not the kind of love that stops at thoughts and feelings. Bob's love takes action, just like Jesus did. Bob believes Love Does. When Love Does, life gets interesting. Each day turns into a hilarious, whimsical, meaningful chance that makes faith simple and real. Each chapter is a story that forms a book, and a life. This is one life you don't want to miss.

Light and fun, unique and profound, the lessons drawn from Bob's life and his attitude just might inspire you to be secretly incredible, too.

Video Sessions include:1. I’m With You2. Free to Fail3. Audacious Love4. Be Not Afraid5. Follow Me

It has been a joy to journey with Bob Goff as he lives out Love and inspires me to do the same. I hope you will join me on this great journey of love in action during our Lenten book study.

WORSHIP VOLUNTEER UPDATE:

“It Takes a Village” This was quoted in a book with reference to raising children. I think we can relate this saying to service at Bethany as well. With this season of Snowbirds, the Flu running rampant and just general, overall, everyday busy schedules; WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!!!! I am asking you to prayerfully consider helping at our worship services this year.

If you are not sure of what needs to be done or how to do it; we are here to help you. You can volunteer via the phone, email or text. You can contact our Church office, Monday through Friday during daytime hours of 8:30-2:00. If you are able to help with the 11:00 service you may also contact Robin Sampson or use the sign- up sheet in the Narthex. If you are able to help with the 5:30 Saturday Service or 8:30 Sunday Service you may also contact Peg Bushore or use the sign- up sheets in the Narthex. (Sign-up sheets are on the table outside the Church Secretary’s door.) PLEASE consider volunteering, and if you are contacted please respond as soon as you are able.

We need Greeters to stand by the front doors as members and guests enter. Sometimes you will need to reach over to the entry from the Fellowship Hall to say hello as well.

We need Ushers to help pass the collection plate and guide members to communion on the appropriate Sundays.

We need Communion Assistants to help with dispensing the communion bread.

We need Lectors to read the First Reading, responsively read the Psalm and the Second Reading. The readings are available by email or in paper version prior to when you need them and are printed and waiting on the podium the day of service.

We need Coffee Hosts to make and serve coffee and lemonade. COOKIES ARE PROVIDED BY THE COUNCIL, YOU DO NO NEED TO BAKE. You can bring your own treats if you like.

If you have any questions you may contact Pastor Tim, Robin Sampson or Peg Bushore. Thank you for your consideration.

RECYCLING:“How do you handle the sometimes-overwhelming generosity of others during the

holiday season? I sometimes joke that I was born recycling. I remember getting boxes and bags of hand-me-downs as a child. Unless it was worn out, when it no longer fit, it kept going to the next one to use. These days, instead of going to relatives, sometimes we do garage/rummage sales, donate it to the resale shop, which turns it around to use profits to help the community. Those items that are too worn out end up being made into other things, like quilt squares or rag rugs. I like what my brother and sister-in-law do; after merging two households into one, they have the policy if they want to bring in something new, something old has to leave. Something new to think about in the New Year. How will you show your stewardship side in caring for the earth?” Submitted to the Good News page of the NEIA Synod Star by WELCA’s secretary, Anna Jetson. Anna asks a great question. Did your New Year’s resolution include recycling? The Thrift Store is a great place for items to be recycled. It is also a great place to volunteer. See you there!

By pastor Jane, retired.

ALTAR GUILD:

We are seeking volunteers to help with Altar Guild for the current year.

We are changing the format of communion to use the communion trays on Sundays and will continue to serve by intinction at our Saturday evening services. We will provide personal and/or group training; printed instructions will be provided to assist you as well.

The needs of Altar Guild are as follows:

1. Saturday evening 5:30 p.m. services a) Set up communion for intinction only. b) On the 2nd and 4th Saturdays all items need to be removed from Altar after service. c) On the 1st and 3rd Saturdays, put juice decanter in the refrigerator for overnight and put

communion wafers away. Wine decanter and large wafer on platen can be left on Altar for following morning’s service. Take communion bread out of freezer for next morning’s use.

d) If you are able to set up only for a Saturday evening service, coordinate with Sunday volunteer for tear down and clean up.

2. Sunday Morning services 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. a) Set up communion with trays, disposable cups and unleavened bread.b) Set up will be on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month.c) Clean up after the 11:00 a.m. service. (If the Sanctuary is not being used clean-up can be

done later in the day or early Monday morning.)

3. Baking of the Communion Breada) This is a once monthly task. The recipe makes six loaves and should be enough bread for

one month’s use. It is helpful to have the bread put in 2 packages with one ready for the 1st week and the other put in the freezer for the 3rd week.

4. Changing Altar paraments and Brass Cleaninga) Seasonally help change the Altar paraments to the corresponding color.b) Brass Cleaning is generally done the Saturday before Easter.

Page 6: €¦  · Web viewSome of us have barely put away our Christmas decorations and already Lent is knocking on the door. We will celebrate Ash Wednesday on February 14 with service

5. Miscellaneousa) Inform Altar Chairpersons of needed supplies.b) Inform any substitutions or inabilities to fulfill your role as soon as you are able.

THERMOMETERS—YOU HAVE OPTIONSThermometers come in a variety of styles. Here's what you need to know about the most common thermometers.

Regular digital thermometers use electronic heat sensors to record body temperature. These thermometers can be used in the rectum, mouth or armpit. Armpit temperatures are usually the least accurate. Rectal temperatures provide the best readings for infants, especially those 3

Page 14: €¦  · Web viewSome of us have barely put away our Christmas decorations and already Lent is knocking on the door. We will celebrate Ash Wednesday on February 14 with service

months or younger, as well as children up to age 3. For older children and adults, oral readings are usually accurate as long as the mouth is closed while the thermometer is in place.

If you plan to use a digital thermometer to take both oral and rectal temperatures, you'll need to get two digital thermometers and label one for oral use and one for rectal use. Don't use the same thermometer in both places.

Most digital thermometers can record temperatures from the mouth, armpit or rectum often in a minute or less. A digital thermometer is appropriate for newborns, infants, children and adults. You need to wait 15 minutes after eating or drinking to take an oral temperature. Otherwise, the temperature of your food or drink might affect the thermometer reading. It can be difficult for children or anyone who breathes through the mouth to keep their mouths closed long enough to get an accurate oral reading.

Digital ear thermometers use an infrared ray to measure the temperature inside the ear canal. When positioned properly, digital ear thermometers are quick and generally comfortable for children and adults and are appropriate for infants older than age 6 months, older children and adults but are not recommended for newborns. Earwax or a small, curved ear canal can interfere with the accuracy of a temperature taken with a digital ear thermometer.

Temporal artery thermometers also known as forehead thermometers use an infrared scanner to measure the temperature of the temporal artery in the forehead. Temporal artery thermometers can record a person's temperature quickly, are easily tolerated, and are appropriate for infants older than age 3 months and for older children. New research suggests that a temporal artery thermometer also might provide accurate readings for a newborn. Additional research suggests they are the most accurate alternative to rectal digital thermometers for taking a child's temperature. They may be more expensive than other types of thermometers.

Mercury thermometers use mercury encased in glass and are no longer recommended because they can break and allow mercury which is toxic to escape.
