Math: Operations with fractions

Outcome: N7.5 Develop and demonstrate an understanding of adding and subtracting positive fractions and mixed numbers, with like and unlike denominators, concretely, pictorially, and symbolically (limited to positive sums and differences). [C, CN, ME, PS, R, V] b. Model addition and subtraction of positive fractions and/or mixed numbers using concrete or visual representations, and record the process used symbolically. C. Explain how a common denominator can help when adding fractions and/or mixed numbers.

Objectives:As a result of this lesson, students will be able to add fraction with unlike denominators pictorially, and concretely.

As a result of this lesson, students will demonstrate their understanding of fractions and how they can be used in real life situations.

Set: 15-2O minutesHand back Integers tests. Students who got below 13.5 out of 27 on their test may correct all their tests in order to receive a passing grade. All students must get their tests signed from a parent or guardian. Complete homework check on homework assigned from the previous lesson. Afterwards, correct the questions that were assigned.

Duration: 20-30 minutesReview steps/procedures to adding fractions. Discuss how fractions can be used in many real life situations for example playing basketball. Shots made=numerator shots missed=denominator Create scenario: Many times when coaching basketball I keep stats on my players. The only tricky thing is often times each player takes a different amount of shot attempts per game how can I use fractions in order to see who shoots a higher percentage (find common denominator). Get volunteers to shoot baskets at the front of the class. Have students take different amount of shots and keep track how many they make and take. Afterwards find common denominator in order for them to see who shot better! Leave fractions of each shooter on the board for a minute and give each student one minute to complete question. Do this activity a few times through as long as student behaviour/participation is acceptable.

Closure: 15-20 minutesHandout extra worksheets on adding fractions with unlike denominators for students to complete. Review how to remove improper fractions as well as simplifying fractions.

Adaptations: If students are struggling completing original activity complete first one for them in order to guide them in the right direction.

Materials: Paper, pencil, basketball, net.

Professional Target: Give clear directions when explaining basketball activity and ensure all students are participating/staying on task.
