This year we are going to try turning learning on its head. You will use your homework time to watch videos with explanations of the key concepts and in class we will then use that information to carry out tasks to help you to learn and understand.

The advantage to this is that you will be able to watch the videos several times, and you will also be able to post questions in various places if you need some help as you are watching them.

The majority of the work will be accessed from the internet and by using this booklet, coupled to your text book.

Some things you need to do…

1) Search for, and then ‘like’ ‘Miss Woody Flipped’ on Facebook. The URL is www.facebook.com/MissWoodyFlippedThe purpose of the Facebook page is to provide you with the links and also to give you the chance to post questions.

2) Find the ‘MissWoodyFlipped’ channel on YouTube. You can post questions in the comments box under the videos, or you can post questions to the Facebook page.

3) Send an email from the email account that you regularly use and check to [email protected] so that I can email you your homework too.

4) Sometimes in class, or for homework, I will be using a web-based quiz software. You can access this on laptops or on smartphones. The URL is:

www.socrative.com

You then go to ‘Student Log in’ where you will be asked to input the teacher room number. Mine is 977369.

When you log in you will be asked to give your name (please give the correct one!) and then you will be shown whichever activity it is that I want you to do.

We completed this section at the end of Year 10.

You may want to spend a little bit of time going back over it though…

Homeostasis: the maintenance of a constant internal environment

What factors will the human body need to control and why?

Negative Feedback

An air-con system works by having a thermostat that detects the temperature of the room. If the temperature is higher than the temperature set by the thermostat then the air-con is turned on and cold air is pumped into the room. If the temperature is lower than the temperature set by the thermostat then the air-con is turned off and the room warms up.

In this way, the air-con system is operating as a negative feedback system. This means that the response causes the opposite effect.

In a negative feedback system:

If something is hot, it will get cold. If something is high, it will get lowered. If something is cold, it will get hot. If something is low, it will be raised.

We have negative feedback systems throughout our bodies. They are very useful in controlling temperature, water levels in the blood, sugar levels in the blood and many other things. They are very sensitive and they can respond to our needs.

5

If the temperature is low the unit responds by turning off and letting the room warm up.

If the temperature is high the unit responds by turning on and cooling down the room.

The thermostat detects the temperature of the room and sends a message to the air-con unit.

Homework 2: go to the ‘MissWoodyFlipped’ YouTube channel and watch the ‘Glucose Regulation’ video. Then complete the page below:

Summarise the key points made in the video (you could use words or diagrams or a combination of the two!)

What are the key words and phrases that you think are important in this video? Include definitions.

What are the names of the HORMONES involved in glucose regulation and what do they do?
