Chapter 1: Down the rabbit holeHow strange…?

It appeared 7 times.

What about you? Would you think it was strange if you were Alice? Why or why not?

Falling down the rabbit holeRead the rest of the chapter from pg 2 – 7.

I think it is strange/ a little strange/ not strange (circle

accordingly) because

1. strange because rabbits cannot talk in real life/ rabbits do

not talk in human language in real life.

2. a little strange because I think rabbits may speak human

language however we are unaware.

3. not strange because this is Alice’s dream so anything can

happen here/this is a fantasy story.

“There was nothing really strange about seeing a rabbit. And Alice was not very surprised when the Rabbit said, ‘Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be late!’ (Perhaps it was a little strange, Alice thought later, but at that time she was not surprised.) - page 2

Count how many times the word ‘strange’ has appeared in Chapter One.

After writing down your thoughts, share them with your partner.

As a class, act out the scene where Alice fell into the rabbit hole. Then, discuss what was so strange about it.Directions for acting: Choose three students to act as Alice, White Rabbit and Narrator. The rest of the class will read in chorus. For the characters- Alice and White Rabbit, focus on the emotions expressed through the voice, facial and bodily movements. For the chorus, focus on the decreasing excitement in the voice as the story progresses.

My Notes

My favourite quotes or phrases from this chapter:

One thing I have learnt about Alice is that she ______________________________________________________________________. The sentence that tells me so is “_______________________________________________________________” from page(s) ______.

Suggested answers for “One thing I have learnt about Alice”:

1. she enjoys reading picture books with conversation“And what is the use of a book,' thought Alice, 'without pictures or

conversations?”2. she is impulsive/rash/adventurous

ProblemAlice was only 8cm tall so she wanted to get a little bigger.

Attempt 1

Alice broke off a piece from opposite sides of the mushroom and ate the piece in her left hand.

Attempt 2

Alice brought up her right hand through the leaves and ate a little piece from the other piece of mushroom.

Attempt 3

Alice ate from one hand again.

Attempt 4

Alice ate from the other hand until she was about twenty-five centimeters tall.

Solu

tion

Unsuccessful attempt because she grew so tall that her head was as high as the tallest tree in the wood.

Unsuccessful attempt because she got smaller at once but it was still not the right height.

Unsuccessful attempt because it was still not the right height.

Successful attempt because she was now twenty-five centimeters tall which was just right for her.

My Notes One thing I have learnt about Alice is that she is beginning to accept the strange behaviour of the characters in Wonderland.

Evidence: The Duchess…pushed the baby into Alice’s arms and hurried out of the room.

“Oh, the poor little thing!” said Alice, looking at the baby, which had a very strange face. – pg 19

Alice was not really surprised at this, because so many strange things were happening today… - pg21

Chapter 5: A mad tea-partyWhat made this a mad tea-party?There were some things that the Mad Hatter and March Hare said and did that were illogical. Listen to the audio recording of this chapter, paying attention to the conversation at the tea-party. Write them in the speech bubbles and box provided. Then discuss with your class why their speech did not make sense.

Characterisation of the Queen7

Why is a bird like a desk? Have some coffee.

This is illogical because

there was no coffee in the teapot for Alice to drink.

I told you that butter wasn’t good for watches.

This is illogical because he is asking for a reason why a bird is like a desk when there is nothing in common between the two.

This is illogical because watches do not run on butter, instead they run on batteries.

What did Mad Hatter and March Hare do to the Dormouse that seemed illogical?

The March Hare poured a little hot tea on the Dornouse’s nose when it fell asleep.

They tried to squeeze the Dormouse into the teapot.
