Theme - The Very Hungry Caterpillar Read, listen to or watch The Very Hungry Caterpillar and see if you can complete the following tasks. You can use the pictures attached to sequence and retell the story. (NB: All written tasks can be supported by an adult in the form of scribing or supporting in overwriting/underwriting if more appropriate) Task 1 – Literacy The Very Hungry Caterpillar loves to eat! What is your favourite food? Can you take photos of your favourite foods? Can you draw a picture of your favourite food? Challenge - Can you write some words or sentences to describe your favourite food? What is another name for a describing word? Task 2 – Literacy /Understanding the World Have a look around your house and see if you can find any of the things that the caterpillar ate. Can you colour in pictures of the foods that he ate? Can you cut & stick or draw them in order? Challenge – Can you write a list of the things that the caterpillar ate during the week? Task 3 – Literacy/Art Either ask an adult to draw you a pictures of a butterfly to decorate or have a go at drawing your own. Decorate it however you want. Next see if you can use signs/words/sentences to talk about your butterfly. If you can, write down your words and sentences. Challenge – Have you heard of a simile? Theme - The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Read, listen to or watch The Very Hungry Caterpillar and see if you can complete the following tasks. You can use the pictures attached to sequence and retell the story.

(NB: All written tasks can be supported by an adult in the form of scribing or supporting in overwriting/underwriting if more appropriate)

Task 1 – Literacy

The Very Hungry Caterpillar loves to eat! What is your favourite food? Can you take photos of your favourite foods? Can you draw a picture of your favourite food?

Challenge - Can you write some words or sentences to describe your favourite food? What is another name for a describing word?

Task 2 – Literacy /Understanding the World

Have a look around your house and see if you can find any of the things that the caterpillar ate. Can you colour in pictures of the foods that he ate? Can you cut & stick or draw them in order?

Can you create a diary of your experience of you time at home. You can do just one week or you can do a diary entry each day! You might just want to cut out some photos of things that you have done and stick them onto paper, you might be able to draw a picture and as an adult to help you with the writing or you might be able to write your own sentence for each day!

Task 5 – Maths

Listen to some different Days of the Week songs - there are lots of different ones! Can you say/sign the days of the week in order? What day is it today? What day is it tomorrow? What day was it yesterday? Can you write those answers down?

Challenge –What day will it be in 2/3/4 days’ time?

Task 6 – Maths

Go back to the story. Can you count each fruit that the caterpillar eats? Practise writing each number. Can you find that number of different objects around the house e.g. 4 towels, 4 socks, 4 shoes…

See if you can add up different foods that he ate on different days. You could use real fruit or different objects to help you.

Challenge - Can you write the sums down using the ‘+’ and ‘=’ symbols? If you are felling really clever, see if you can multiply each answer by 2, 3 and 5!

Can you talk about the colours of each thing that the caterpillar ate? Look at the colour sequencing sheet attached. Can you identify each colour? Can you find other things around your house that are that colour? Can you complete the sequence?

Task 7 – Understanding the World

Look at the foods that the caterpillar eats. Which ones are fruit/not fruit/healthy/not healthy? Can you group some foods in your house that are healthy/not healthy? Make a sign for each one group and take a photo. Which ones should we eat the most of and which should we only eat sometimes? Can you make some healthy snacks?

Task 8 – Understanding the World

Watch a short clip on the life cycle of a butterfly. Can you name each one/each stage? See if you can complete the activity attached. Have a look at some life cycles of other animals. You might like to look at frogs and chickens!

Task 9 – DT/Creative

Can you help an adult to prepare an evening meal? Can you take some photos along the way? Practise undoing lids, spreading, cutting, squeezing and other key skills.

Task 10 – Creative

Use an egg box to make your very own caterpillar. You might want to make one from a paper plate too!

See if you can cut the pictures out and put them in the correct order to show the life cycle.

If you can, label each one.

If you are feeling super clever, try and match the description to each stage too!

Pupa/Chrysalis Caterpillar Adult butterfly Eggs

The butterfly emerges from the pupa and flies off to find flowers to feed from.

The egg hatches into a caterpillar, which eats leaves, and grows until it is ready to turn into a pupa/chrysalis.

The body of the butterfly develops inside this.

The butterfly lays eggs on leaves.
