Ballantyne Cup Club Handicap Race – Saturday 2 June 2018 We had a perfect conditions for this iconic and historic race along both sides of the Hutt River. A small but committed field of runners turned up, and Matyas James hit one of his periodic bouts of great form to fool the handicapper and take the trophy by beating his handicap (estimated best time for the 7.8km) by 14 seconds. Mel MacPhee was fastest woman in 32.50, 4 th overall on the day; she was the only other person to beat her handicap, by 10 seconds, to pick up the female trophy. There was some good close racing amongst the other women, with Georgie Chadwick finishing a little way clear of a group of Anna Hooper, Amanda Green, Jaime Robinson and Emma Sturmfels. Pam Graham was a little way behind her handicap but still quickest female on age equivalent times, and Sharon Wray had a great head to head with Don Stevens (who was equal 3 rd overall on handicap). Rowan Hooper was fastest on the day with 28.27 despite having smashed out some hard laps at Karori Park a few hours earlier, not too far ahead of Todd “Grand Master” Stevens, who is starting to show ominous signs of good form for next week’s Dorne Cup. Michael Wray wasn’t too far behind Todd despite having done some big miles earlier, and there were good performance by the likes of Ross Lake, Glen Wallis and (inevitably, as he almost always races well at the Ballantyne!), Nigel Roberts. Many thanks to all who turned up to support, help and race!
