BIG BEN and the HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT

Big Ben is the nickname for the Great Bell of the clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London; it is usually extended to refer to both the clock and the clock tower. The tower in which Big Ben is located is officially called the Elizabeth Tower. Originally just the “Clock Tower”, it was renamed in 2012 for the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II.

The Palace of Westminster, better known today as the Houses of Parliament, is the oldest royal palace in London, a world heritage site and one of most recognised buildings in the world. Built on the site of a medieval palace, and possibly a Roman Temple dedicated to Apollo, the palace has been in continuous use since the first half of the 11th century.

Today the oldest existing part of the Houses of Parliament is Westminster Hall, dating back to the reign of King William II. Built in 1097, it is the oldest ceremonial hall in Britain and was the largest hall in Europe. Other historic parts include the 1297 Edward I Chapel of St Mary Undercroft and the Jewel Tower, built by Edward III in 1366. The present Gothic palace, re-built in 1854 by Charles Barry, has over 1100 rooms, 100 staircases, 11 courtyards and a 200m riverside terrace used for entertaining.

This monument is very touristic; it is the most famous one in London. This place is beautiful, and gigantic. The Big Ben clock tower was designed in the Gothic Revival style. Gothic Revival is an architectural style that was popular in England during the nineteenth century. It was a tribute to the Gothic style of the Middle Ages.

Buckingham Palace

Presentation:

Buckingham Palace is a place in the City of Westminster, which is part of central London, England. It is where British monarchs live and work. The palace is a setting for state occasions and royal hospitality, and has been a focus for the British people at times of national rejoicing or crisis. It is an amazing palace which attracts a lot of people. Buckingham Palace is the most iconic royal building in the country. It is the main residence of Her Majesty the Queen and is one of the few working royal palaces left in the world.

History:

Buckingham Palace was built in 1703 by John Sheffield. Originally, it was only a deprived country house (Buckingham House) belonging to the Duke of Buckingham; in 1762 it was bought by king George III to be used as a house for his wife Queen Charlotte before being enlarged during the 19th century by the very famous architects John Nash and Edward Blore. They added three wings around the main house.

Architecture:

As far as the architecture is concerned, Buckingham Palace is among the top of the list buildings. Considering its 775 rooms, 78 baths, 1,514 doors, and 40,000-plus lightbulbs, the structure is gigantic. Of course, like all old buildings, Buckingham Palace carries stories in its every brick, beam, and baluster, and its popular garden.

What to see at the Palace:

The Palace has an incredible 19 state rooms which are used to entertain visitors with lavish banquets, speeches and more. The State rooms are beautifully furnished with treasures from the Royal Collection including paintings, as well classic furniture from England and France.

Known as the “walled oasis in the middle of London” Buckingham Palace’s garden is as stunning as the building with over 350 different species of wild flowers.

This garden makes the palace a mesmerizing place.

The GLOBE THEATRE

The first Globe Theatre was an open roof theatre. It was built in 1599 by Shakespeare's playing company, the Lord Chamberlain's Men, [on land owned by Thomas Brend] unnecessary, and was destroyed by fire on 29 June 1613. It was soon rebuilt on the same site, but was unfortunately closed on 6 September 1642, as were all of London's theatres, on an order from the Long Parliament. Explain.

The Globe Theatre, as we know it today, can hold 1,500 people. It opened in 1997, approximately 750 feet (230m) from the site of the original theatre.

The Globe proved a triumph, and its first decade of use made it a favourite for generations of theatre goers. Many of Shakespeare’s plays were first performed at the Globe, although his plays were performed at other theatres and many others wrote for the Globe.

The National Gallery

The National Gallery is an art museum located on Trafalgar Square in London. It stands on the site of the King’s Mews.

The Gallery’s architect, William Wilkins, used many of the construction methods of the Mews building when he built the National Gallery. In 1826 the home of the Prince Regent was demolished but its impressive columns were saved. Wilkins selected eight of the columns to use in his new National Gallery building. The gallery was compared unfavourably with other national art galleries as The Louvre in Paris, and ridiculed in the press.

In 1820, the House of Commons paid £57,000 for the collection. The 38 pictures were intended to form a new national collection; but because of its size, in 1831 Parliament agreed to construct a real building at Trafalgar Square. This location could be reached by the rich driving in their carriages from the west of London, and by foot by the poor from the East End. It was felt that in this location the paintings could be enjoyed by all classes’ society.

The museum is totally free for everyone, so if you come visit London, do not hesitate to go visit it! It’s open every day from 10 am to 6 pm and to 9 pm on Friday. You can access it by subway at the following stops: Westminster, Piccadilly, Leicester Square and Charing Cross, and by the buses 24, 176, 29, 6, 13 and 23.

Madame Tussauds Museum

Madame Tussauds is a wax museum, created in 1835 by Marie Tussaud. The museum is located on Marylebone Road, in London.

Marie Tussaud was born in 1761, in Strasbourg as Marie Grosholtz. She was introduced to wax modelling by the physician Phillipe Curtius. Indeed, her mother used to work for him. In this way, Curtius taught Marie the art of wax modelling. When she was six years old, Phillipe Curtius moved to Paris and took her with him.Eleven years later, at the age of seventeen, Marie created her first wax sculpture which represented the French writer Voltaire. She then became the art tutor of Madame Elizabeth, King Louis XVI’s sister.  During the French Revolution she was imprisoned for three months awaiting execution, but shewas released after the intervention of an influential friend. At this time, she also modelled other famous characters like Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Benjamin Franklin. She inherited the doctor's vast collection of wax models following his death in 1794, and spent the next 33 years travelling around Europe. She married François Tussaud in 1795, and that is how she earned her show name.

By 1835, Marie had settled down in Baker Street, London and opened a museum. One of the main attractions of her museum was the Chamber of Horrors. This part of the exhibition included victims of the French Revolution and newly created figures of murderers and other criminals. Other famous people were added, including Lord Nelson and Sir Walter Scott.Today, we still have some of the sculptures that were created by Marie herself, but fire damage in 1925, coupled with German bombs in 1941, destroyed most of the 400 original

Piccadily Circus

Piccadilly Circus is a crossroads and a symbolic place in London. It is known for its neon lights and large billboards located on a single building.

Until the sixteenth century, Piccadilly Circus belonged to Eton College and the Mercer's Company. Its name comes from Robert Baker. The latter was enriched in the trade of "piccadils", high neck collars for the neck worn by men, which were fashionable at this time.

In 1692, Piccadilly Street was called Portugal Street. But in 1743, in honour of the wife of King Charles II of England, its name became Piccadilly again.

The square was built in 1819 to connect Regent Street to the grand Piccadilly shopping street. At that time, Piccadilly Circus included only Regent Street.

The crossroads had its first light commercials in 1910, when the facade of the "London Pavilion" got its first billboard. The first traffic lights were installed on August 3, 1926, and Piccadilly Circus underwent its last major renovation in the 1980s.

Once considered the centre of the British Empire, it is still one of London's active centres today.

He is known to have worked for children and for the poor. Since the fountain is topped by the Angel of Charity, this fountain is one of the best known tourist attractions.

The Horses of Helios Fountain: this fountain, located just a few steps away, deserves just as much admiration! This is the Horses of Helios fountain, a work particularly appreciated by Londoners ... This bronze statue of the 4 horses of Helios is located at the corner of Piccadilly and Haymarket Streets.

The Royal Albert HallThe Royal Albert Hall is a concert hall, in South Kensington, in Central London.

The name of this hall was given in honour of Prince Albert, who was Queen Victoria’s husband. Its construction began on May 20, 1867 and its inauguration took place four years later, on March 29, 1871.

On November 15, 1941, General Charles de Gaulle gave a speech for the French who were present in Great Britain, broadcast on the BBC as part of the famous show “The French Speak to the French.” This hall is usually used for concerts and dancing shows, but also for speeches and graduations.

The building is oval in shape and measures 83 metres (272 feet) by 72 metres (238 feet). The height of the overlooking dome is 41 metres. Its initial capacity was 8,000 people and the venue sometimes even hosted up to 9,000 spectators. However, new safety standards have recently reduced this capacity to 5,544 seats.

It has the second largest English organ, just behind Liverpool Cathedral.

The Royal Albert Hall is one of the most famous concert halls in the United Kingdom. Each summer it hosts the Proms, founded by Sir Henry Wood, one of the largest classical music festivals in the world. This monument has seen many famous artists, like Richard Wagner in 1877, the Beatles in 1963, Muse in 2008, Adele in 2011, Lady Gaga in 2014, and the Corrs in 2017.

The hall is also used in the cinema, in Alfred Hitchcock film The Man Who Knew Too Much, and it is the concert hall where the world premiere of Skyfall (October 23, 2012) and 007 Specter, James Bond (2015) took place.

There are many events to come: Steven Wilson on March 29th,

RPO film music gala, on April 22th,

Angus and Julia Stone on June 10th… and many others.

It’s such a magnificent place. If you come to London, we advise you to attend one concert in the Royal Albert Hall or just come admire its facade. It's a must-see monument in London. The English are very proud of this concert hall and the tourists love it.

Westminster Abbey

Westminster Abbey is one of the oldest and most famous religious buildings in London. The Abbey is steeped in more than a thousand years of History. Benedictine monks first came to this site in the middle of the tenth century, establishing a tradition of daily worship which continues to this day.

It was founded in 960 AD. Starting with William the Conqueror, the Abbey has been the coronation church since 1066 and is the final resting place of seventeen monarchs. The present church, begun by Henry III in 1245, is one of the most important Gothic buildings in the country, with the medieval shrine of Anglo-Saxon Saint Edward the Confessor still at its heart.

An architectural masterpiece of the 13th to 16th centuries, Westeminster Abbey also presents a unique pageant of British history.

A treasure house of paintings, stained glass, pavement, textiles and other artefacts, Westminster Abbey is also the place where some of the most significant people in the nation's history are buried or commemorated. Taken as a whole, the tombs and memorials comprise the most significant single collection of monumental sculpture anywhere in the UK .In 1987 Westminster Abbey was designated a UNESCO world heritage site. It is definitely worth visiting for the people who are fond of Gothic architecture and for those who are crazy about UK History.

Loch Ness

Loch Ness is a large, deep, freshwater loch in the Scottish Highlands, extending for approximately 23 miles (37 kilometers) south-west of Inverness. A little further, the ruins of Urquhart Castle dominate the landscape. It is from there that we have the most beautiful panorama on the lake. In the middle of Loch Ness, Cherry Island, the only island of the lake, offers a splendid view of the Scottish Highlands. It is really gorgeous. On the site, there is an anecdotal museum that lists the various appearances of Nessie, the monster who lives in this lake, 300 meters deep.

Stories that a great monster living in the dark waters of Loch Ness has circulated around the world since the first picture taken in 1933. More than 1,000 stories of eyewitnesses and a huge amount of evidence of the existence of Nessie still disturb the scientists.

Oxford

HistoryOxford University is constituted by numbers of different colleges. As the oldest university in the English-speaking world, Oxford is a unique and historic institution. There is no clear date of foundation, but teaching existed at Oxford in some form in 1096 and developed itself rapidly from 1167, when Henry II banned English students from attending the University of Paris. The University took on a leading role in the Victorian era, especially in religious controversy. From 1833 onwards, The Oxford Movement sought to revitalise the Catholic aspects of the Anglican Church. One of its leaders, John Henry Newman, became a Roman Catholic in 1845 and was later made a Cardinal. In 1860 the new University Museum was the scene of a famous debate between Thomas Huxley, champion of evolution, and Bishop Wilberforce. From 1878, academic halls were established for women, and they were admitted to full membership of the University in 1920. Five all-male colleges first admitted women in 1974 and, since then, all colleges have changed their statutes to admit both women and men. St Hilda's College, which was originally for women only, was the last of Oxford's single sex colleges. It has admitted both men and women since 2008.During the 20th and early 21st centuries, Oxford added to its humanistic core a major new research capacity in the natural and applied sciences, including medicine. In so doing, it has enhanced and strengthened its traditional role as an international focus for learning and a forum for intellectual debate. The colleges and hallsThere are 38 Oxford colleges, which are financially independent and self-governing, but relate to the central University in a kind of federal system. There are also six permanent private halls, which are similar to colleges except that they tend to be smaller, and were founded by particular Christian denominations. The colleges and halls are close academic communities, which bring together students and researchers from different disciplines, cultures and countries. This helps to foster the outstanding research achievement that has made Oxford a leader in so many fields. The colleges and the University work together to organise teaching and research, and many staff at Oxford will hold both a college and a University post.

Visit OxfordOxford is a beautiful city of stunning architecture, history and culture. You'll find ancient and modern colleges, fascinating museums and galleries, and plenty of parks, gardens and green spaces in which to relax. Plus, the city centre is small enough to cover on foot, and only a few minutes walk from the main rail and coach stations.Oxford is not a campus university, so it is not all located on one site. It is made up of many different buildings, including academic departments, colleges and halls, located around the centre of Oxford. Many University buildings, such as libraries and museums, many of the colleges, as well as gardens, are open to visitors during the day, although please note that they may have varying opening hours, fees and rules for groups.Once you're there you can use our interactive, searchable map of Oxford's colleges, halls, departments, libraries and museums to find your way around. You can also use Google Maps to find your way around Oxford on foot or using public transport.
