We returned from Winter Break and continued with our normal routines seamlessly.

We discussed how people make New Year’s resolutions, so we decided to brainstorm a list of goals we want to work on

during the remainder of Kindergarten. We are wrapping up Unit 3 in Reading Street this week and

starting Unit 4 next week. In Unit 3 we have learned the letters Rr, Dd, Kk, Ff and Oo. Be sure to be practicing all the letter names and sounds we have learned so far this year! In Unit 3 we learned

the sight words me, with, she, see, look, they, you, and of. We have learned and are practicing the skills of drawing conclusions

and cause and effect. In reading groups we are working on many skills that help us

become great readers. We are predicting, discussing the author’s purpose, retelling the events of a story in order, and much more.

We are working on sounding out words we do not know by stretching the sounds in the word. If we come to a word we do not know we could look for a chunk in the word that we do know. For

example, looking at the word Pam and seeing ‘am’ in it, then adding the /p/ beginning sound.

We have been moving in our Envisions program. We have now been introduced to addition and subtraction. We are working on being able to answer the number equations and tell or show

how we got our answers. We will continue to work on addition and subtraction throughout the year. We will also start working on

numbers 11-20. It is great to practice identifying these numbers at home! Also, practice counting 0-100.

We did our next round of Aimsweb testing. This time we tested on letter name fluency, letter sound fluency, nonsense

word (students read cvc words that are nonsense such as mep or nat), and phoneme segmentation (The prompter gives a word and

the student breaks the word into ALL the sounds they hear. Cat- /c/ /a/ /t/) We rocked this test! If you are looking for things to practice at home practice letter sound identification and phoneme

segmentation. It is crucial for students to be able to hear the sounds in words. This is a great indicator of reading ability.

We have been exploring snow and snowflakes. We watched a few videos about how snowflakes/snow happens. We looked at

pictures of snowflakes that were magnified and noticed the beauty of each snowflake.

We learned about Dr. Martin Luther King Junior. We celebrated Zander’s ½ birthday. His mom came in as a

mystery reader and they donated the book “Frog on a Log”.

Thank you for making Family Learning Night amazing! It is always so great to see how much support these kiddos have at
