20 Questions

Choose one person to start. This person must think of an object. To make the game easier, he or she can classify the object as animal, vegetable or mineral. Have another player ask a question about the object that can be answered yes or no. The person who has the object in mind should answer the question with a simple yes or no. After hearing the answer, the questioner is allowed to guess the object. The players are allowed to ask a total of 20 questions. If the guess is correct, the winning questioner now thinks of a new object. If the answer is incorrect, another player is allowed to ask a yes or no question.

The Alphabet Game

The goal of the game is to see all the letters of the alphabet before getting to your destination. How do you do this? It’s simple! Simply look on signs, billboards and license plates to spot the letters. Individuals may race to see who can get through the alphabet first or you can work as a group with everyone helping to spot the letter. The trick is the letters have to be spotted in order. It sounds easy but there are a few tricky letters. However, if you are experts once you have gone through the alphabet try going through again but backwards!

The Banana Game

If you're looking for a game that doesn't require a lot of thought, try the Banana Game. Keen observation is the only skill required. The first person who spots a passing yellow vehicle gets points. You can award points based on the size or make of the car. For instance, a yellow school bus might be worth five points, and a yellow sports car might be worth two.Another way to heighten the competition is to put a limit on the time you have to spot bananas. For example, the winner of the game could be the person who spots the most bananas in 30 minutes. Or the winner could be the player who sees the largest cumulative number of yellow vehicles during your entire road trip.

Fortunately/Unfortunately

While you're taking a road trip, your kids are a captive audience. Take the opportunity while you have their attention to challenge them to think positively by playing Fortunately-Unfortunately. In this game, one person will make an unfortunate statement, and then another player will counter the statement with a positive response.Fortunately-Unfortunately presents endless possibilities for creativity and positive thinking. For example, one player could make the statement, "Unfortunately, a lion is going to attack us." A second player would counter with a more fortunate statement such as

Page 6: kidzinclink.weebly.com€¦ · Web view4 Corners. Battleship. Stella Ella Ola. Additional Resources. Material-Free Bus Games. 20 Questions. Choose one person to start. This person

"Fortunately, I took lion taming lessons." The more exaggerated and silly the statements are the better!

A good way to keep everyone in the car entertained and engaged is to play a memory game such as The Grocery Game. To begin, the first player names an object available at a grocery store that starts with the letter A. The next player has to repeat what the first player said and then add another grocery item that starts with a B. For example, if player one says "apples," player two would repeat "apples" and then might add "bananas." If you forget a grocery item, you're out, and the game continues until the player with the best memory wins.If groceries aren't your thing, you can play variations of this game with anything from animals to sports to people's names.

I Spy

To play I Spy, a classic travel game, one person in the car will choose an object around them. He or she then gives the other people in the car a clue by saying: "I spy with my little eye, something…." He or she then will state the object's color, give the first letter of the name of the object or offer another clue.Be sure that players don't choose an object that the car will whiz by too fast. Instead, go for something that is inside the car or that will be in everyone's line of vision for a few minutes. The person who guesses the object correctly is the next person to spy a new item.

I’m Going on a Holiday

The object of the game is to guess what the objects have in common. One person will be it and start thinking of a theme or pattern for objects such as objects with stripes, objects that are green or objects that end in the letter A. They would then start the game by saying “I’m going on a holiday and I’m going to take a ______” The next person would say “I’m coming and I’m going to bring a _________”. The person who is it would then tell them whether or not they are allowed to come. They are only allowed to come if the object they want to bring matches the theme or pattern chosen by the person who is it. Players have to try and guess what the pattern or theme is by finding objects that are allowed to come and finding what they have in common.

In Grandma’s Attic

To play in Grandma’s Attic one player will start by saying the phrase “In grandma’s attic there is a” then they will list an object such as a cat, monkey, sandwich etc. Then it is the next person’s turn. The next person will begin their turn by repeating the phrase and then thinking of an object that begins with the last letter of the previous object. For example it the last object was caT the next object could be Turtle. If children repeat an object that has already been said they are considered “out”

Name the Tune

Players will pick one person to start. That person will pick a song that the others should know and whistle or hum the tune of the song. Everyone else will try and guess the song that the person is humming. Whoever guesses the song correctly gets a turn to hum the next song. They player who guesses the most songs right is the winner.

Say the same thing

You and your friends each start with a random word, then you try to think of a word that’s “in between” those two words and say it. If you say the same thing you win. If you don’t you use the two new words and think of something in between. The game doesn’t stop until you say the same thing.

Sing it Out

The first player sings the entirety of a simple song, such as Mary Had a Little Lamb. The next player repeats the song, leaving off the last word. The following player leaves off the last and second-to-last words. (It's surprisingly hard!) Players have to sing the song correctly on their first try or they're out. The singing continues around the car until all the words have been left out or one player is left.

Team Storytelling

Get the creative juices flowing among your fellow road trippers by composing a group story. One person in the car starts by creating the first line of the story. You can start with a simple "Once upon a time, there lived a princess" or come up with something more unconventional like, "Joey the frog always had blue spots." Next, each person in the car adds a line, and the story builds and builds. Depending on your group's story telling stamina, you could go on for a few minutes or a few hours. To make the game more challenging and fun, make a rule that all of the lines rhyme or, instead of going in a circle, call on people to come up with a line. After you've reached your destination, your kids could write and illustrate the story as a token of their road trip adventure.

Two Truths and a Lie

Provide each person with a slip of paper and pen or pencil. Instruct everyone to write down three statements about themselves. Two of the statements should be true and one of them should be a lie. Allow everyone about 5 minutes to come up with three good statements. Select a person to go first. That person should read aloud her three statements. Then, conduct voting by having the person read her statements again, asking for a show of hands among the group as to which statement they think is a lie. Ask the person to reveal the correct answer. The people who guessed correctly should mark a tally on their sheets for a correct guess. Continue around the room, having each person read his statement and then conducting a vote. Participants should continue marking down each time they make a correct guess. Ask everyone how many correct guesses they had once everyone has read their statements. The person with the most correct guesses at the end has won the game.

Who am I?

Playing the guessing game Who Am I? is a great way to show everyone what they have in common. Think of someone that you and your fellow passengers all know: a family member, friend or neighbor, or maybe a fictional or historical character. Then give clues about the person’s identity by revealing his or her hair color, gender and other distinguishing physical characteristics. Or allow each person in the car to ask only "yes" or "no" questions about the identity of your secret person. Keep giving clues until someone figures out the identity of the

Battleship

Plot all of your ships on your grid by drawing an outline of each onto the grid according to its size (ex: size 3 = 3 blocks).  Ships may not overlap.  Don’t let your enemy see your ships!

Take turns firing upon your enemy by calling out plot points (example: "A-5") and marking them as “hit” (X) or “miss” (dot) on your enemy ships plot according to your enemy’s reply.

When your enemy fires upon you, say "hit" or "miss", mark your ships with an X when they are hit.  When your ship is sunk, you must say, “You sank my ____!”  (fill in the name of your ship type).

The first person to sink all of their enemy’s ships wins!

Cootie Catchers

What to Bring:

- Pencil- Cut out templates

Have a player choose one of the top four squares. Spell the color they chose while you open and close the Cootie Catcher once for each letter in the color they selected. The player then selects one of the four visible numbers on the inside.  Open up and down and side to side as you count the right amount they picked. When you've stopped counting, look inside and let the player choose again. Open and close the right number of times, then choose once more. Open the panel under the number and read the fortune under the panel. Play again and again.

There are all kinds of variations to this game. Just use a little imagination when making your cootie catcher. Instead of colors on the top squares, you can put just about anything -- animals, weather, planets, people, anything! Also, come up with your own fortunes. Here are a few fortune ideas to get you started:

What to Bring:- Pencils- Template

The goal is to score points by seeing license plates from as many states and countries as possible.

First, determine how long the game will last. It could be for one part of a trip, an entire round trip, or even a set period of time (such as a week, a month, the entire summer, or even a full year). As you ride in a car, take note of the license plates you see on other cars. Note each state and country. The License Plate Game can be a competition, or a cooperative game.

For a competitive game you can score the points by giving 1 point to each different Canadian license Plates (exclude Alberta) and 2 for each different American License Plates. Some people prefer to award points only to the first player to see a particular license plate. Be warned: this makes the game much more competitive. For a cooperative game, everyone works together trying to collect as many different license plates as possible.

In a competitive game, the player who has scored the most points when the set time for the game expires is the winner. In a cooperative game, keep track of the total number of points you score so that you can try to improve your score in a future game.

Turn palms towards you and grab the near hand string with your forefingers, middle, ring, and little fingers. Turn palms away from you and pick up the near string onto your forefingers, middle, ring, and little fingers. There are now two strings across the back of your hands and one across the palms. Right middle finger now picks up the left palm string, then left middle finger goes between right middle finger noose and picks up the right palm string similar to Opening A. This is The Cradle. You can make it look more like the cat's cradle by temporarily inverting your hands with fingers pointing down.

There are many variations on Cat's Cradle. Try doing something different occasionally. You may come up with a new figure that terminates the game, or you may be surprised to find you have jumped to one of the other figures from which you can continue the game. For example you can go from Soldier's Bed to an inverted Cat's Eye by picking up the crossed strings from below, instead of above, and then picking up the straight strings from above.

Tricks with String

Position 1

Pick up one short section of the string loop on both thumbs without twisting it. Extend hands apart. The string now goes from one thumb to the next without any twists in it. The string closest to you is called the near thumb string, and the farthest one is called the far thumb string. Now, using your little fingers, pick up the far thumb strings on the fingernail side of the little fingers. (If told to grab a string, you would curl your finger around it and either hold it with the fingerprint side or, if instructed to, twist it 180 degrees towards or away from you as directed to take the string up on the finger or thumb.) Now just spread your hands and fingers apart to tighten the string and you have Position 1.

Opening A

Page 37: kidzinclink.weebly.com€¦ · Web view4 Corners. Battleship. Stella Ella Ola. Additional Resources. Material-Free Bus Games. 20 Questions. Choose one person to start. This person

Field Trip Activities

Do Position 1. Use your right forefinger to move left and pick up the left palm string on the back of the forefinger.

Tighten the strings. The left forefinger then moves right, goes through the right forefinger noose, and picks up the right palm string. Unless told otherwise, tighten the strings after each step with palms facing each other, and fingers pointing up and spread apart.

Here's what the strings in Opening A are called.

Opening B

Opening B is the same as Opening A except you start with the left forefinger picking up the right palm string.

A Hand Catch

Do Opening A. Hold your hands out towards someone. Have them put one hand through the center of the figure. (2) Now release the strings on both little fingers and forefingers, but keep the strings on the thumbs. You have now caught the other person's hand.

Do Opening A again with the far string still around the other person's wrist. Tell them to put their hand back up, from below, into the center

of the figure. (3) Let go of the strings on your little fingers and forefingers again, and pull your thumbs apart. The string will go right through their arm!

Fishing Spear

Do Position 1, then use the right forefinger to pick up the left palm string, but do not pull on this string yet. As your right hand returns to it starting position, the forefinger moves away from your body twisting the right forefinger noose 360 degrees. (2) The left forefinger then moves right, through the right forefinger noose, and picks up the right palm string just like in Opening A. (3) Release the right thumb and right little finger nooses at the same time. This figure is also called The Witch's Broom, or Turkey's Foot.

A Moth

Field Trip Activities

Do Opening A using a short #5 or #6 string. Release thumb strings. (2) Thumbs then move over the forefinger strings and pick up the near little finger strings. Release the strings on the little fingers.

(3) Thumbs next pick up the near forefinger strings. Now remove (navaho) the lower thumb strings (which is easiest to do using the middle fingers to lift them off and over the thumbs while leaving the upper thumb strings in place). (4) Forefingers move down and grab the top string that goes around the middle of the thumb/forefinger noose, then, moving away from you, extend the forefingers up and palms out.

Take up Position 1 on the left hand only. With the right hand, move left and through the hanging string noose, then reach around to the back of the left hand. With your right thumb and forefinger grasp the string going across the back of the left thumb. (2) Now pull this string down and through the hang string noose just far enough to transfer it to the left forefinger without twisting it. (3) With your right thumb and forefinger hold tight to the left palm string near the left little finger and transfer it to the left thumb. (4) Again, using your right thumb and forefinger, move over top of the left hand, reach around to the back of the left hand and grab the string going around the back of the left hand. Pull this string out and over the left hand to remove it, and then slowly extend your right hand up while letting the strings on the left hand slip to raise the framework for a hut (or teepee?)

Field Trip Activities

Start with Position 1 using the left hand only. The right little finger then moves left, through the hanging string noose, and picks up the left near thumb string. Extend hands apart. (2)

The right thumb then picks up the right near little finger string. This is a twisted Position 1. Now do Opening A.

The thumbs then move over, through the forefinger noose, down, toward you, then up. (3) Release the forefinger nooses, then release the little fingers and extend to catch the thumbs in a snare.

If, before you release your little fingers, you put all fingers from below into the thumb nooses and transfer them to the wrists, then release your little fingers, you will have made The Handcuffs. Alternatively, transfer only one thumb noose to your wrist and hold the other open

with your fingers, then ask an innocent bystander to put their hand through it. Release little fingers to cuff and arrest them.

Batoka Gorge

Drape the string loop over your right wrist keeping the two strings separated without any twists. (2) The left hand then moves to the right and through the two hanging string nooses. Extend hands apart. There should be two crossed strings, and a near and far wrist string. (3) The little fingers pick up first the far then the near crossed strings. (4) Now flip the near wrist string that goes straight across up and over the hands. The near little finger strings run diagonally down to the far wrist string. (5) Pick up these near little finger strings on the thumbs, and then remove the wrist nooses.

This is a nice African figure, but for most of us who have never been to Batoka Gorge on the Zambesi River below Victoria Falls, it doesn't quite look like a gorge. The figure is said to look like the river as it zigzags back and forth through Batoka Gorge below the falls. If you want to invent new names for figures, that's okay.

Blob Tag

The object of blob tag is to avoid being stuck to the human “blob.” The blob starts out as one person, who is “it,” but as the blob tags each player, the player becomes part of the blob and has to help to tag the next one. This game is most fun when played with at least five players and can be played with as many as 20. Choose who is going to be “it,” and have “it” go to one side of the room, while everyone else goes to the other side.

Freeze Tag

Also known as Stuck in the Mud, Scarecrow, Sticky-Glue, Zombie Tag, or Ice-and-Water (in Asia), players who are tagged are "stuck in the

mud" or "frozen" and must stand in place with their arms stretched out until they are unfrozen. An unstuck player can perform an action to unfreeze them, such as ducking under their outstretched arms or

crawling through their legs.

Toilet Tag

Select 1-3 students to be the "its" (depending on class size and area).  Personally, I identify the "its" by having them wear a gold vest.  To

start the game, I have the "its" stay near me, as the rest of the class scatters about the playing area.  On my signal, the "its" will attempt to tag the players.  When a player is tagged, he/she must assume a toilet

position (one knee on the ground and the other knee up, one arm straight out to the side).  The tagged player must remain frozen in this

position until they are rescued by another player.  To be rescued, a player must sit on the knee of the frozen player, grab their straight

arm and make a WHOOSH sound while pulling the arm down to simulate the flushing of a commode.  Once a player flushes the toilet of

a frozen player, the frozen player is freed.  Personally, I play once a player is tagged three times, they come to the sideline, get a vest and re-enter the game as an "it".  The game ends when a certain time limit

has been met or when all players are frozen.

Resource:http://www.mrgym.com/Tag/ToiletTag.htm

Revenge Tag

In revenge tag everybody is it. Each person tries to tag everybody else. If one child tags another that child has to sit down until the person that tags them is out. Then they may stand back up and continue tagging others. If two children tag each other at the same time they play rock, paper, scissors and the loser is considered tagged by the other child.

The game ends at the end of a time limit or when one person has tagged everybody.

Fruit Basket

Divide the children into 4 groups. Assign each group a fruit – Apple, Orange, Strawberry or watermelon. Have them line up on one side of

the field. Pick one person to be “it” in the middle of the field. The person then calls out one of the fruits. Children assigned that fruit have

to try and run to the other side of the field without getting caught. If they get caught they join the “it” person in the middle and try and tag

others. The last person to get caught wins.

Resource:http://www.teachingideas.co.uk/pe/fruitbasket.htm

Reverse Red Rover

Divide the children into 2 groups. Each group lines up on the end of their side of the field. Choose one team to go first. That team picks a person to call over first. Then they all turn around and say “red rover

red rover we call (name) over” The person whose name is called sneaks over to the other team and taps one of them on the shoulder

and turns to run back to their side. The player who gets tapped on the shoulder yells “GO” when they do and the team runs to try and tag the

person before they get back to their side. If they tag them then that person has to join their team. If they do not tag them then that person

stays with their team. It is then the next team’s turn to call.

Octopus

Set up a rectangular "ocean," as described in the Tips section below, and

mark the boundaries.

The Fish line up at one end; the Queen (or King) Octopus stands in the

middle and cries out, "I am the Octopus, queen of all motion. Let's see if

you can cross my ocean."

The Fish try to run or sneak across the ocean as the Octopus tries to tag

them. If tagged, they become Seaweed. Keeping one foot planted,

Seaweed try to reach out and tag the Fish running by, thus turning those

players into Seaweed as well.

Once the Fish reach the other side, the Octopus and Seaweed say the

chant and the crossing contest starts again. The game continues until all

the Fish become Seaweed. The last Fish tagged becomes the new

Octopus.

Rock, Paper Scissors

On a large playing field, split the group into two teams. Make sure there is a halfway point that is recognizable. In the back of each team's side, make sure there is another "end zone" area that is recognizable.

Teams will huddle up and decide which of the rock, paper scissors moves they will do. When both teams have decided, they approach the

center line and with the help of the facilitator, they all say "Rock... Paper... Scissors... shoot" together and perform their action (it can be fun to have the actions much bigger than normal - such as their whole

bodies turning into rocks, or giant scissors, or big pieces of paper).

Whatever team wins can immediately begin chasing the other team, attempting to tag them. The team that lost tries to run back to their "end zone" as quickly as possible. If they make it there without being

tagged, they are safe. If they get tagged, they must join the other team.

The game usually does not end up with one team having everyone and so the facilitator must use his or her discretion of when to end the

game.

The 3 rock, paper, scissors moves are:

Rock beats scissors.Scissors beats paper.

Paper beats rock.

4 Corners

To begin, four corners (or general areas) of the room are marked from the numbers one to four. One player is designated to be "It," or the

"counter." This player sits in the middle of the room and closes his or her eyes, or exits the room, and counts to ten. The remaining players choose any one of the corners and quietly go and stand in that area. When the "It" player has finished counting, she calls out one of the

numbers. All players who had chosen that corner or area are out of the game, and they sit down. Then, "It" counts again and the remaining

players move to a different corner. Unless the corner is out.The last person to still be in the game wins, and usually becomes the

new "It."If "It" calls out a corner containing no players, she either calls out another number right away or the players rotate to a new corner,

according to different versions of gameplay.
