CHAPTER 4 RATIONAL NUMBERSLesson 1: Terminating and Repeating DecimalsWrite Fractions as Decimals

Our decimal system is based on powers of 10 such as 10, 100, and 1,000. If the denominator of a fraction has a power of 10, you can use place value to write the fraction as a decimal.

Words Fraction DecimalSeven tenths 710 0.7

nineteen hundredthsone-hundred five thousandthsExample 1: Write the fraction of mixed number as a decimal. 74100

74100

=0.74

So, 74100 = 0.74Example 2: Write the fraction of mixed number as a decimal.a. 720

So, 720=0.35

b. 5 355 35=5+3

5= 5 + 0.75

So, 5 35 = 5.75

Got it? 1 & 2a. 310 b. 325 c. −6 12

Example 3:Write 38 as a decimal. Example 4:

So, 38=0.375 .

Page 2: Web viewFind the fraction of the fish in the aquarium that are gold fish. Write in ... and 68% of his passes in the next three ... About how many feet long is the pool

Write 79 as a decimal.Example 5:Write −140 as a decimal.

Got it? 3, 4, & 5a. −78 b. 2 18 c. −311 d. 8 13

Example 6:We can convert decimals back to fractions. Find the fraction of the fish in the aquarium that are gold fish. Write in simplest form. 0.15 = 15100

= 320So, 320 of fish are goldfish.

Got it? 6Find the fraction of the fish in the aquarium made up by each fish. Write in simplest form. a. molly b. guppy c. angelfish

Guided Practice:Write each fraction or mixed number as a decimal. Use bar notation if needed.1. 25 2. −910 3. 59

So, −140 =0.025 .

So, 79=0.777…¿

Lesson 2: Compare and Order Rational NumbersA _______________________________ ____________________________________ is common multiple of the denominators of two or more fractions. The _________________ ________________________ _________________________________ or __________ is the LCM or the denominators. You can use the LCD to compare fractions. You can also use a number line. Example 1: Fill in the with <, >, or = to make ⍜ −1 5

6 ⍜ −1 16 a true sentence. Graph each rational number on a number line.Mark off equal-size increments of 16 between -2 and -1.

The number line shows that −1 56 < −1 16 .Got it? 1: Fill in the with <, >, or = to make ⍜ −5 5

9 ⍜ −5 19 a true sentence.

Example 2: Fill in the with <, >, or = to make ⍜ 712 ⍜ 8

18 a true sentence.The LCD is 36.

Example 3: In Mr. Huang’s class, 20% of students own roller shoes. In Mrs. Tevino’s class, 5 out of 28 students own roller shoes. In which class does a greater fraction of student own roller shoes? Express each number as a decimal and then compare.

20% = 0.2 528 = 5 28 ≈ 0.1724

Since 0.2 > 0.1724, 20% > 528 .Mr. Huang’s class has more student who own roller shoes.Got it? 3 In a second class period, 37.5% of students like to bowl. In a fifth period class, 12 out of 29 student like to bowl. In which class does a greater fraction of students like to bowl?

You can order rational numbers using place value.Example 4: Order the set {3.44, п, 3.14, 3.4} from least to greatest. Line up the decimal points and compare using place value.3.1403.14159…3.4403.4444…..

3.140 < 3.141 < 3.440 < 3.444…So the order is {3.44, п, 3.14, 3.4}Got it? 4 Order the set {23%, 0.21, 14 , 15} from least to greatest.
