5th Grade Spelling

Spelling must be taught by pattern for it to be effective. This spelling program consists of 35 weeks of lists/homework, daily activities, and suggestions for assessments in lieu of spelling tests. Traditional tests do not teach spelling!

Spelling Lists/Homework: The order of the lists can be determined by you to best meet the needs of your class. There is also a blank homework/list page at the end for you to use to make your own lists if needed.

Homework Directions & Daily Activities:Each week I do a few of the activities listed below with my students. Homework must be turned in each day, but everything else can be done as you see fit in your classroom. Pick and choose!

Mondays Pass out the spelling lists. Generate a whole class list of words that follow that

week’s pattern either on chart paper, the white board or SMARTboard.

Students may choose some of the generated words to add to their list. There are blank spots on the homework pages for students to add their own words that also follow the week’s pattern. Be sure to check each student’s list to make sure the new words were written correctly (this takes about 15 minutes).

Tuesdays Students turn in homework. Students create their own fun flash cards of spelling

words using index cards. Students play Word Connect in partners. One student

writes a spelling word. The next student writes a word connected to that word by a shared letter. They then take turns until all spelling words are used.

Example: This is what the game may look like after three turns.

M O T FICTION O NOTION

Page 4: Web viewI feel spelling correctly and understanding vocabulary are completely different concepts. All word lists consist of 7-8 words each ... satchel. struggle

Wednesdays Students turn in homework. Joke writing using spelling words. Students generate

jokes using their spelling words. Joke writing may take about 10-15 minutes. Make sure to have 5 minutes of partner or small group joke sharing time after writing time! Ask students to turn in their jokes. This can be used as a spelling assessment.

Students make word art posters. Use any size paper you see fit. A spelling word or words must be the focal point of the poster. Encourage students to get creative. The definition or meaning of each word should be incorporated into the poster somehow, either in words or in art.

Thursdays Students turn in homework. Students write a single page reader’s theater using all

of their words. This should take about 20-30 minutes. After the reader’s theater scripts are written, give students time to perform for each other. This can be done in partners or small groups (note- this is also a homework assignment for a few weeks).

Students give each other a no-pressure spelling test. Pair students carefully. After the test is given, each student corrects his or her own work. This is purely for practice, but can also be used for your assessment.

Page 5: Web viewI feel spelling correctly and understanding vocabulary are completely different concepts. All word lists consist of 7-8 words each ... satchel. struggle

Fridays Students turn in homework. Students write a poem using their spelling words. The

poem can be based on a topic, theme, or student’s free choice. This can be used as an assessment.

Play Fix That Word. Directions: Write a sentence on the easel, whiteboard, or SMARTboard using a spelling word. Spell the spelling word incorrectly. Ask students to correct the word. This can be done as a whole class discussion activity or as an individual, written activity. This can be used as an assessment.

Special Notes: This program teaches spelling through patterns. It is

not a vocabulary program by any means. I feel spelling correctly and understanding vocabulary are completely different concepts.

All word lists consist of 7-8 words each (with a few exceptions). Spelling can be easily differentiated this way. Some students may keep the 7-8 words if that is best for them or they may add words from the generated list on Monday. Differentiation is built in depending on which words students pick. Encourage students to challenge themselves, and feel free to select words for some students.

You can use any of the activities listed any day of the week. My order for use is only a suggestion.

I rarely do more than one spelling activity each day. You can give a traditional spelling test on Friday if you

wish and a pretest earlier in the week. I’ve found those are not necessary to teach spelling, but you may include a test if you wish.
