The Dispensation* of the Law begins from Exodus 19:8 to Matthew 27:35, from Mt. Sinai to Calvary, from the Exodus to the Cross. This is the conditional Mosaic Covenant. The Abrahamic & New Covenants impose only one condition: faith. The history of Israel in the wilderness & in Canaan is one long account of their violation of the law (which they promised to do in Exodus 19:8). To a people under the law God is in a “thick cloud” & unapproachable (Exodus 19:9-23).

The Christian is not under the conditional Mosaic Covenant but under the New Covenant of Grace. (Romans 3:21-27; 6:14-15; Galatians 2: 16; 3:10-14; Gal. 4:21-31; Hebrews 10:11-17)

*Period in history that serves as a framework thru which God relates to man.

1. C 20 The Law under the Mosaic Covenant: Matthew 5:17-18 as referred in the New Testamenta. Given to Israel to be a “peculiar treasure to YHWH, a kingdom of priests & a holy

The Commandments/Moral Law: Expressing the righteous will of God.

The Judgments/Civil Law: Governing the social life of the people.

The Ordinances/Ceremonial Law: Governing the religious life of Israel.

2. The commandments and ordinances form one religious system. 3. The commandments were a “ministry of condemnation & death” (2 Cor. 3:7-9)4. The ordinances provided:

a. A high priest as God’s representative to the people.b. A “cover” in the sacrifices for their sins in anticipation of the cross. (Heb. 5:1-3;9:6-9; Rom.

3:25-26)5. The law reveals man’s sinfulness. 6. a. C 21 vs 1-11: Rules for Slaves :

Slaves were a normal part of the economic & social fabric of Israel & other cultures in that period. These laws are protective of the slave in that particular context. One could be a slave by war instead of being killed (Numbers 31:26; det. 20:10). Unlike most ancient tribes, slavery in the Israelite culture is never more than 6 years. A Hebrew slave is never sold to a foreigner; children could be sold to pay debts (2 Kings 4:1-7; Isa. 1:1; Amos 2:6) or you could sell yourself as a slave & go free the 7th year. Once free, the master is obligated to provide you a new start in life (Deut.15:12-15).Christ as the Servant: Psalm 40:6; Isaiah 42:1; Isaiah 52:13; Zechariah 3:8;Philippians 2:5-8; Hebrews 10:9; Luke 2:49

The law is an expression for His love for us (Deut. 33:2-3; Psa. 119:97)10. Christ’s delight was in keeping the law (Ps. 1:2; Rom 7:22)11. The Law of God : Romans 7:22,25 Matthew 5 vs The Law of Moses to be enforced in the

millennium (Isaiah 2:3); 12. Law of Moses not affecting the Gentiles. (Acts 15:7-11)13. We are bound to the Law of Christ: (Eph. 6:6; I Corinthians 9:21)

2. Jubilee Year (7x7 +1 = 50th year). On Jubilee, all slaves go free; all lands go back to rightful owner. A kinsman could redeem land that was leased (story in Ruth). Title deed had instructions on how kinsman could redeem the land. (Revelations 5: title deed of the earth—John wept that no man could open the scroll but the Kinsman Redeemer was found who is able to open the book – the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David.

have this experience - only their leaders. That experience of communion is available to us. The Tabernacle – as in “God made flesh & tabernacled among us.”

9. C 25 The Tabernaclea. The Tabernacle is God’s Dwelling Place: Hebrews 9:21-24, a pattern of things in heaven.

They are figures of the true (2 Chronicles 6; Jeremiah 17:12; Psalm 24:3; Rev. 15:5)b. The Tabernacle as a Type of Jesus Christ. God dwelt in the Tabernacle - 2 Cor.5:19; “God in

Christ” – In Him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. Christ as the ultimate tabernacle. Col. 2:9; Hebrews 10:5, “A body has thou prepared for me.” Jesus Christ Himself spoke of Himself as a Temple: John 2:19 the temple was a rendering of the Tabernacle.

c. Christ in the Church: John 1: 14; “dwelt” is “tabernacle among us”. The purpose of the Tabernacle was to contain the Shekinah glory, where God dwelt. Rev. 21:3: “The Tabernacle of God is with men, he will dwell with them…”

1. The Courtyard – as we approach the Tabernacle from the outside, all we see is white – symbolic of God’s righteousness.a. Posts set in bronze sockets; everything outside the building is bronze, symbolizing judgment.

Bronze is the only metal that could endure fire. b. Tabernacle has only one entrance: John 10:1-8 c. Altar of Sacrifice: first item to be encountered. Everything begins & ends at the cross where

the ultimate sacrifice was made. d. Laver – the Word of God (Eph. 5:26; Jn.4:10,14; 7:37, 38). The building has no beauty that

we should desire it (Isaiah 53:2) Until we enter.2. The Building, the Place of Fellowship– built of acacia wood wrapped in gold. Wood speaks of his

humanity. Gold, of His deity. Acacia wood, a desert growth, is symbolic of Christ, in his humanity as a “root out of dry ground” (Isaiah 53:2) The planks rested on silver sockets—the Levitical symbol for blood. Judas, as he threw the 30 pieces of silver on the temple floor cried: “I have betrayed innocent blood!”

Silver is redemption

money (Ex. 30:13; Lev. 27:3; Lev. 17: 10-11; 1 Pet. 1:18; 1 Cor.6:20). In the Old Testament (OT), silver is blood money used for redemption. Everything in the Tabernacle sat on silver sockets. Matthew 27:3-4; 1 Cor. 3:11 – the whole structure rests upon the blood of Jesus Christ.

9. C 26 vs 31-37 – The Veil – Hebrews 9:3; a partition between God & man & when Jesus was crucified & gave up His breath, the veil was torn in half – symbolic of the opening of the way between God & man. The priests must have patched the veil again because the temple services continued for nearly 40 years after it was torn by God. – An attempt to put sinners back under the law. (Galatians 1:6-9). 1. C 29 v 33 Atonement in Hebrew “Kaphar” which means “to cover.” The English word “atonement” is not the actual translation of the word “kaphar” but an interpretation. The Bible states that the legal sacrifice “covered” the offerer’s sin and secured God’s forgiveness—according to translators, it made God and the sinner “at-one.”

2. The OT sacrifices did not “at-one” the sinner with God because animal sacrifices can never take away sin. Hebrews 10:4. The sacrifices implied the confession of sin and acknowledged judgment – death, but God “covered” or “passed over” (Romans 3:25) his sin, in anticipation of Jesus Christ’s sacrifice which put away the sins. (Hebrews 9:15)
