From Pastor Dwayne

Most often when we think of prayer, we think about simply communication.  Me communicating my needs and hopes and fears and worries to the God who hears and listens.  But this begs the question; if God already knows everything about us, and knows what we need before we ask, why do we even pray?  Isn't it a bit redundant, praying to a God who already knows?  I would say yes, yes it is.  So, we have to think differently about prayer.  Prayer is more than communication.  Prayer is communion with God.

Now communion does incorporate communication.  Communication is certainly part of prayer, but not all of prayer.  What we seek in prayer and our faith is communion with God through Jesus Christ with the help of the Holy Spirit.  We don't simply want to say a few words at God and then walk away.  We want a deep relationship, a speaking and listening, a constant awareness of the presence of God.  Or as Paul reminds us "Be joyful always; pray without ceasing; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus" (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).

These instructions by Paul seem impossible on two accounts.  One, if prayer is just communication how in the world can we do that without ceasing?  Impossible.  And two, there are some things in life that are so hurtful that it is impossible to give thanks for.  So, what is Paul saying?  Paul is reminding us that our whole lives, all of it, good and bad, joyful and sorrowful, hopeful and hopeless and everything in between, are in the very hands of God.  God is communing with us, living with us, and will never leave us.  God is not only communicating with us, but God is surrounding us in every moment of our lives and whispering to us that we are loved beyond our wildest imagination.  God gave us not just words, but The Word, Jesus Christ, who loves us and shows us how we are to live life.  Jesus did use words to pray, He even took time to get away by himself to be in solitude and prayer.  But his prayers did not end when we said Amen.  He lived his prayers, he lived out this deep connection and communication and communion with God.  He prayed as he talked and told stories, as he healed and served others, as he performed miracles and feed the hungry, as we lived and as died.

Let us live into the example that Jesus set for us.  That our whole lives, absolutely all of it, is our prayer to God.  That we are not simply communicating, but we are living out our prayers and communion with God in everything we do.  Remember, as Jesus said as he was going up to heaven, "I am with you ALWAYS, even to the very end of time".  May our prayers be words and actions,

Hopefully by the time you read this newsletter the youth will have placed in the Halloween parade.  The theme was Decades: Looking Forward to Looking Back.  We always have fun

brainstorming and building the float.

D.O.C.K. will be collecting and packing shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child during the month of November.   Please consider either packing a shoebox or donating supplies to be

packed.  There will be a display in the Narthex where you can get a packing box and instructions and a large box nearby to put filled shoeboxes.  Please see the Operation

Christmas Child flyer in this newsletter for more specific instructions. Our final collection day will be Sunday, Nov. 18th.   We will drop off all of the boxes at Waterville United Methodist

Church on the 19th.

The cost to cover the shipping and handling is $9.00 per box.  Please include the $9.00 in the box.  If you don’t add the money, D.O.C.K. ends up using their activity fund to cover the

cost.  Thanks for your help.

There’s a concert called BIG CHURCH NIGHT OUT being held at the Stranahan Theatre on Saturday, November 10th.  I’ll be taking a group of youth.  If we have a group of 10 or more we get a discount and 2 free tickets.   So, if anyone would like to go with us, let me know.  We’ll

need drivers as well.  I’ll be ordering tickets soon so let me know.

Our youth led worship service is November 25th.  The theme is “Show Up and Be Different”.  It’s the perfect theme to go with our youth discussions of “Why fit in when you were born to

stand out”.

CHILDREN'S MINISTRY

Our Kids Kingdom Sunday School during worship is going great! The kids start out in the Sanctuary and after the greeting, kids kindergarten through fifth grade go to the basement  classroom for Sunday School. We learn about Jesus through Bible, in stories, lessons, crafts and fun! We need a volunteer with us each Sunday and there is a sign up sheet in the Narthex. Our nursery is still available for kids up the kindergarten age.

Thank you for your continued support of our kids!!

The Fund Raiser committee along with many others, have been very busy this last month.  Our FALL RUMMAGE SALE was a huge success.  We made a profit of $3,867.

The weekend after the rummage sale was our FALL BBQ.  It too was very successful.

We made a profit of $1,702.

A BIG THANK YOU  to all those who helped with either or both.  We can't do these without a lot of dedicated people. Begin saving your "Treasures" for our

Spring Rummage Sale.

We will announce our dates after the first of the year.  Put the Spring BBQ on your calendar (May 5th) and plan on helping.

COMMITTEE CLIPS

From Larry Ulrich and the Finance Committee: The Finance Committee met on 10/9/18 in the Parlor at RUMC. The monthly and year-to-date results as compared to budget were reviewed. So far, the year-to-date actual figures are doing slightly better than budget. Once again, the committee went over the Consecration Sunday calendar and the various dates leading up to November 18th. Thank you, Larry Ulrich, Co-Chair, Finance

From John Rust Jr. and the Trustees Committee: The Trustees will be upgrading the lighting in the Sanctuary to LED lights within the next month. Also, on the list will be work in the Parsonage. Parsonage upgrades include storm doors, upgrading the shower, and a garage door opener. They are also in need of a second refrigerator. If you or anyone you know has a good refrigerator that they would be willing to donate, please let John Rust know at 419-290-5282. Thank you

CONGREGATIONAL CARE COMMITTEE

It's hard to believe another month is almost done and we approach “the Holidays” season!!  Our committee just has a short agenda this month which is good!!

Thanks to everyone who helps out by supplying goodies for coffee hour and those who volunteer for greeter and valet.  We are certainly grateful for your

loving commitment.

We will again send Veteran’s Day cards to about 50 vets in the Ann Arbor VA Hospital to recognize them on Nov. 11th.  This will be the 3rd year doing so from our committee and its rewarding to help them know how much their sacrifice and service to our country means!  This is something no American should take

for granted!!

Craft night will continue on Tues. Nov. 27th in the parlor at 6 PM.  This is such a fun group as we get together and eat talk and craft.  Please consider

joining us next month, even if you don’t have a craft to work on the fellowship is great!!

Mark your calendars for Dec. 16th Christmas Caroling.  If you know someone who would enjoy this please let Brenda or Kim know.  More info and sign

up sheet to follow in December.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. Enjoy your time with family and friends and

remember to thank God for all that He provides.

We sent a prayer blanket to a coworker of Brenda Weis for a young girl named Paige back in September. Toni who is Paige's mom said tears stormed down her face when she was given the blanket. It was an amazing gift given to a sick little girl.

Thank you to all the ladies who prepared meals for Whit and myself. You were a lifesaver. Thank you to all who sent cards and flowers. Thank you for all your prayers and concern. RUMC has amazing people, GOD BLESS YOU ALL. Thank you to Pastor Dwayne for your visits and

The outreach center includes a soup kitchen, food pantry and clothing center. Additional services include providing hygiene packs to families and hot showers and hygiene and snack kits to the

homeless.

Since 1982, Helping Hands has served more than 1.5 million meals to people in need. An average of 250 meals are now served each day, Monday through Friday, through the generosity of local community

members and businesses and through the dedication of our volunteer teams.

The mission of Helping Hands of St. Louis is to provide hot nutritious meals, groceries, clothing, hot showers

We strive to acknowledge the dignity of each and every person by assisting with a smile, an embrace, or a material or a spiritual need. We welcome everyone who comes to our doors for a warm meal. We never ask questions of eligibility, religious affiliation or residency.  We want to provide a refuge for those who have no place to go,

who are hungry and looking for someone with whom to talk. We try to stress the importance of the person and the need for human dignity and respect.
