Summary of newsletter contents:

SMSC Project Students in panto Gifted and Talented newsletter Y7 Academic Review Day Parent Questionnaire

Dear Parent/Carer

As you know we are currently undergoing an Ofsted inspection. Yesterday we were very proud of the students’ behaviour and attitude to their work in lessons and around the school. Today is the second day of the inspection and we are sure staff and students will make us proud again.

TL1 Highest expectations

Don’t Tell the Bride SMSC Project

Miss Winter recently arranged a Dragon’s Den style presentation with her Year 11 SMSC students. They were given an imaginary couple and had to plan their wedding and then present their ideas to some ‘dragons’ (not saying who they were!). The themes for the wedding were Christmas and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Winners were Billy Stella and Brandon Lucas who planned a wedding that took place in a castle in Germany and a honeymoon in a caravan in Clacton (it was heated). Well done boys. Special mention and thanks to Lewis Lambert who played the guitar all the way through the proceedings choosing his music to match each presentation.

Panto

Well done to our students Ben and Victoria Wilson and Emily Chapman who are in the Panto ‘Syndarilla – The Urban Panto’ at the Dugdale Centre Enfield Town. Poster at bottom of newsletter.

GIFTED AND TALENTED MISSION

CAMBRIDGE GIFTED & TALENTED STUDENT CONFERENCE

Turnford KS4 students went to the Guildhall in Cambridge to the Gifted and Talented Student Conference on 30th November. The students were given an awe inspiring

university experience which provided a highly intellectual, unique opportunity to meet and listen to top academics speaking on a wide range of topics such as String Theory and

Nature of Consciousness.

“Incredibly inspiring and at times mind blowing” Ayse Koyunlu year 11

“I left my house this morning thinking I knew something now I go back knowing that what I knew was nothing. And I love it. Now I want to go learn everything I can”. Ben Mitchell.

“Really made me contemplate the reasoning behind my existence. I’m so excited as to the opportunities that lay ahead in my future. Hugely motivating”.

BUSINESS GIFTED AND TALENTED STUDENTS GO TO SAINSBURY’S DISTRIBUTION CENTRE

As part of our applied business course, it is very important for us to learn what strategies and techniques real businesses apply to ensure their success. At the logistics depot we

learnt how all of the products get from the warehouse to the shop floor in the most efficient ways possible. We also learnt about the importance of new technology in the

business and the impact that it has. As the depot was so local, it gave us a great insight into how a real life business works. We met a range of people of different ages and from different areas and positions in the business. They answered all of our questions which

will be vital for our course. We learnt about subjects such as the structure of the

business, the business ownership, opportunities within the business, sources of finance and more. At the Islington branch we met more people who each told us their story of

how they started and progressed upwards through the business. It was interesting to see how there are many paths that you can take in the business each leading to new

opportunities. Overall the trip was very successful as we gained invaluable knowledge that will help us in our course. (written by Sam Winter yr 12)

CONGRATULATIONS TO: Maths Gifted and Talented Students: twenty of our year 12 pupils sat the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge test on the 6th of November. Year 7 Academic Review Day

Thank you to all the Year 7 parents who attended the Academic Review Day last week. It was a very positive day and Mrs Gant and Miss Radwell (Head of Year 7) wish to commend the Year 7 Tutors on their fantastic enthusiasm, kindness and understanding

to all the students and parents. Their capacity for changing appointments to suit, dealing with sensitive issues and going the extra mile showed great commitment and dedication. We believe our Year 7 students and parents found it a very helpful and worthwhile event.

A1 All subjects are in line with national averages.

A2 Develop a whole school approach to literacy, numeracy and ICT.

Have you thought about a book as a Christmas present to encourage reading. Good reads can always be recommended to the students by Mrs Saunders in the library or ring Julie my P.A. if you are stuck for ideas and she can get you a recommended reading list.
