Expanded Learning Opportunities

● Having Expanded Learning Opportunities in afterschool and summer helps students succeed, helps parents keep their jobs, and helps ensure businesses can hire the local workforce they need.

● Afterschool & Summer Learning programs help young people develop the skills they need for a successful future.

● K-12 Students only spend 18.5% of their waking hours in a formal classroom setting. That leaves over 80% of their young lives to be filled with informal learning opportunities.

● In a study done by Oregon’s Chief Education Office in 2016, school districts cited more time for learning in afterschool & summer as the number one priority in providing support to low income students if additional resources were made available.

● Partnerships are a proven and cost-effective way for schools and community organizations to provide more meaningful expanded learning experiences - making a real difference in the lives of children and families.

Summer Learning● Summer Learning is one of the most powerful tools we’ve got for closing the

achievement gap in our schools. ● Roughly 2/3 of the 9th grade gap between lower and higher income youth can be

attributed to unequal access to summer learning opportunities during the elementary school years.

Health and Wellness● Access to food compounds summer learning loss. Only 1 in 5 low-income students in

Oregon who qualify for free & reduced lunch participate in the free summer lunch program.

● Children gain weight 2 to 3 times faster during summer vacation than they do during the entire rest of the school year. Summer programs can help provide structure, opportunities to eat, scheduled time for exercise, and ensure children are not unsupervised for long periods of time.

STEM● Afterschool & Summer STEM opportunities offer students several unique benefits

including extra exposure, change of scene or environment, and a chance to follow their spark.

● STEM Afterschool programs can and should be an effective part of the STEM solution for Oregon youth.

● A national 11 state study done in 2016 (and including 10 Oregon programs), showed that providing quality afterschool STEM learning opportunities can improve STEM Identity, Attitude about STEM, knowledge of STEM Careers, and 21st Century Skills like critical thinking and perseverance.
