How bad was World War I? Topic cover sheet S3 Autumn Term World War I lasted four years from 1914-1918. People at the time called it the ‘Great War’: they thought that it was the worst conflict that they would ever see. It lasted 4 years, involved over 50 countries, killed 9 million men, cost a fortune and destroyed large parts of Europe and other parts of the world. But was it really that bad?
