Celebrating the Lenten Season

The highlight of the year for Christians is Easter, the day when our Lord rose from the dead. However, prior to Easter is what we in Christendom recognize as the Lenten Season. The word “Lent” is derived from the Middle English “Lente” which means “springtime”. In many languages, the word "Lent" actually means "fast." This is where the custom of giving up something for Lent originated. Lent always begins on the seventh Wednesday before Easter on what is termed Ash Wednesday. The Lenten Season is a forty-day season of preparation for Easter. Why 40 days? Jesus fasted and was tempted in the wilderness for 40 days. Lent, then, is a time of fasting, praying, and repentance. In every case, it is a time for serious, disciplined self-examination, a time spent in intensive prayer and repentance before the cross of Calvary. In the past, the focus of Lent was always threefold: It was a time to prepare new converts for baptism through intensive classes and instruction. It was a time for long-standing Christians to review their lives and renew their commitment to Jesus Christ. It was a time for backsliders to be restored to the faith.

Lent is not required anywhere in scripture, but it has been a custom, which Christians have practiced for most of the last two thousand years. This year, however, as a church, I am calling us to engage in a congregational partial fast (see II Chronicles 20:1-4). As a partial fast we will abstain from food during the time of 12:00-5:00 PM and begin and end our fast with a moment of silent prayer. We will begin the day Lent begins which is Ash Wednesday. From Ash Wednesday up to the Wednesday before Easter there are 46 days, but remember the days of Lent are 40 days. Why? The 40 days of Lent are supposed to be days of fasting, which means days of discipline and self-restraint. But Sunday, the Lord's Day, should never be a day of fasting, but a day of celebration! So each Sunday we suspend our Lenten disciplines and celebrate. Thus, Lent begins Ash Wednesday, February 17th and ends Saturday, April 3rd.

Here are some questions upon which you might pray and meditate during Lent: Am I sharing gladly what I have with others, especially the stranger and the poor? Do I have a gracious and patient attitude with others, especially those who irritate me? Do I feel the power of connection to God and the church in corporate worship? How is my devotional and prayer life progressing? Am I listening to God more and complaining less? Is it time for a change or a growth in my Bible study and prayer life? What are the lurking sin problems, which still plague me? Am I thoughtful and forgiving, or do I take my frustrations out on others? Do I speak up for the maligned and oppressed, or do I remain silent in order to remain popular?Do I pray for and support my church, pastor, leaders, and brothers and sisters in Christ or am I critical?

Remember Lent is a season of soul-searching and repentance. I pray that as we enter into our Lenten Season Congregational Partial Fast we will see God do marvelous things in the life of our church and our members and we will see God’s vision for our church clearer. Remember, The Best is Yet to Come!

Scripture Reading

~ A Psalm of David ~

Psalm 99:1

1 The LORD reigneth; let the people tremble: he sitteth between the cherubims; let the earth be moved.

2 The LORD is great in Zion; and he is high above all the people.

3 Let them praise thy great and terrible name; for it is holy.

4 The king's strength also loveth judgment; thou dost establish equity, thou executest judgment and righteousness in Jacob.

5 Exalt ye the LORD our God, and worship at his footstool; for he is holy.

Psalm 99:9

6 Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among them that call upon his name; they called upon the LORD, and he answered them.

7 He spake unto them in the cloudy pillar: they kept his testimonies, and the ordinance that he gave them.

8 Thou answeredst them, O LORD our God: thou wast a God that forgavest them, though thou tookest vengeance of their inventions.

9 Exalt the LORD our God, and worship at his holy hill; for the LORD our God is holy.
