Canadian History Semester Inquiry Booklet: Welcome to the inquiry process!! This is where you get some freedom in this course. What do you want to investigate? I have been asking you to think of a topic over the last little while. Now it is time to "dive" into it. Before you can investigate/dive, you have to have a topic to guide you through your discovery/process. From the time you were little, you were very inquisitive, always asking questions. However, unfortunately, as some point, some of you stopped asking questions. For some of you, you began asking the question - "what do I need to know in order to pass?" I'm hoping to break that cycle here. What do you want to know? What are you curious about? What do you want to know more about? Make it interesting and personal!

Research

This is a very important question to consider as you embark on your inquiry journey. There is so much information out there that figuring out where to start and what sources to use can be both confusing and frustrating. With that in mind, allow me to offer a few tips.

1. Start simple – published secondary sources, such as textbooks and encyclopedias are your best starting point to obtain information. These sources stick to the basic facts, are not too detailed, and are largely reliable sources of information.

2. Internet research – Internet research is delicate because there are some many pages that are unsourced, unauthored, and therefore unreliable. Here are traits you should be looking for when researching the internet

a. Pages that end in edu or org. This means the page has been produced by either and educational institute or a recognized organization. These are the pages you want to find

b. Recognizable sponsors, like the government of Canada, or mainstream newssources that contain ACTUAL AUTHORS.

c. Academic Journals – when you search try adding the tag Academic Journals to your topic and see what comes up

d. WIKIPEDIA should not be a primary source of information; however, it can be a good starting place to understand your topic a bit better

e. IN GENERAL, IF THE PAGE LOOKS UNPROFESSIONAL, HAS NO AUTHOR, AND DOES NOT END IN EDU OR ORG YOU SHOULD STAY AWAY!!

3. Use videos – National Film Board is good. There is also lots of good stuff posted on You Tube, however, please use the same precautions listed under internet research

4. Go to the library and find books. I know.... mind blown right?!

5. Calling or emailing an expert

6. Following someone on Twitter

7. Visiting a Museum - St. Boniface, Human Rights, Manitoba, etc..

Cornell Note Taking FramesWhen gathering your research, use the Cornell Note Taking Frames. This is a great way to figure out where your research came from, as well as quickly search your notes. As you start looking at a new source - read through it first - is it usable -does it answer anything that you need answered? If no, move on! If yes, go to your Cornell Note Taking Frame and get down the source information - author, title, url, date. Start taking note of what's in the source under "the key ideas". You may just copy and paste these ideas. Once you have finished, go back and index your notes - under key words - one word to describe the point that you have written/copied. In the summary box, write down the perspective of the source, as well as any lasting impressions that you had after reading it.Pro Tip: Try to stay away from sources that are “unknown”. If you are trying to convince someone you would want to use an author’s name, rather than saying “According to an unknown source….”.

Pro Tip: If you are taking less than 5 points from a source – you should probably find another source, that has more to offer.

Stage 3 – Using Your Research to Answer Your Questions:

As you read through your sources, you should be attempting to gather the information needed to critically analyze your essential question. When it comes to answering your questions, you need to know where you got your ideas from. You need this for two reasons: first, you must give credit where credit is do – otherwise you are stealing (plagiarising) someone else’s work; second, you want to lend support to your arguments – this means that is someone else agrees with your train of thought – you must be on to something.

When looking for information – try to get ideas from a couple of sources, rather than going with the first answer you find. If more than one source is saying the same thing, you are probably on to something here. If you find one source that says one thing and another that says something else, now you might have to find a third to confirm which source is telling you the truth.

For organizational purposes, you will find the next few pages set up to answer your secondary questions. Each page will have a space for your question. Below it, you will find a chart set up like this:

Number of Source:

Important notes/ideas/quotes:

Source #

Source #

Source #

As you numbered your sources on the previous page – simply put the number of the source in the box marked “Source # ____”. In the “Important notes/ideas/quotes:” box – write down the ideas that help you answer the question, as well as important quotations that you could use in supporting an argument.

Pro Tip: Copy and paste the information from your Cornell notes to help you answer the questions on the next few pages. Don’t forget to record the number of the source!

Stage 4 – Communicating Your Learning:

You have finished your research and have hopefully answered your essential question. Now it is time to communicate your learning. What is your authentic piece? How will you make your learning public? Pick a format that speaks to you. If you like the format, there is a good chance that not only will you finish your project, but you will also be successful in communicating your ideas to your audience. Look at the visual below for ideas. Thinking outside the box is fully encouraged!

Pro Tip: Remember this piece will have to communicate your learning –so if you choose visual art – you will have to create an explanation or one-page handout that explain the visual art. Likewise, if you create a PowerPoint or Prezi – remember – these are presentation tools – so that means you want to present to us, which is fine!

My authentic piece is…..

I have chosen this because…..

Page 31: thawryluk.weebly.comthawryluk.weebly.com/.../canadian_history_semester_inquiry_boo… · Web viewWelcome to the inquiry process!! This is where you get some freedom in this course

Stage 5: Reflection

Spend some time reflecting on your journey here.

What did you find rewarding? Elaborate

What did you find frustrating? Elaborate

What do you need to remember for the next time you work on an inquiry project? Elaborate

Were you able to answer your question? Explain

Were you satisfied with your answer? Explain

If you had one more week, what would you add to this inquiry?

Page 32: thawryluk.weebly.comthawryluk.weebly.com/.../canadian_history_semester_inquiry_boo… · Web viewWelcome to the inquiry process!! This is where you get some freedom in this course

Stage 6: Historical Thinking Concepts:

Using your topic of inquiry, you will need to answer 3 historical thinking concepts in the space provided. Please consult the Google Drive folder – Inquiry - Step 5. Select the 3 questions and answer clearly using supporting details from your research. If you need to address any other historical thinking concepts, you can select additional questions to answer here as well. However, only ONE question from each Historical Thinking Concept will be marked.

Once you have finished this booklet – go back – see if you can tighten up space without distorting everything.
