MEET OUR PANELISTS

Lauren van Schilfgaarde serves as Tribal Law and Policy Institute's(TLPI) Tribal Law Specialist, facilitating technical assistance to tribalcourts, including Healing to Wellness Courts, and researching legaland policy issues as they face tribal governance and sovereignty. Lauren works with tribes on building tribal justice capacity,restorative justice models, and child welfare and cultural competentbest practices.  Lauren additionally serves as Professor for the TribalLegal Development Clinic at the UCLA School of Law.  Prior to TLPI,Lauren served as law clerk for the Native American Rights Fund andthe Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles.  Lauren is licensed in theState of California, and currently serves on the board of the NationalNative American Bar Association, the American Bar Association'sNative American Concerns Committee, and the American BarAssociation's Tribal Courts Council.  Lauren previously served onthe board of the California Indian Law Association.  Laurengraduated from the UCLA School of Law, where she focused herstudies on tribal and federal Indian law.  Lauren is originally fromAlbuquerque, New Mexico.

Jill Murphy is the Program Supervisor of Washington’s King County Family Treatment Court, a therapeutic court designed toassist substance using parents who have lost custody of theirchildren.  She is also the Program Supervisor for the Parents forParents Program in King County.  This program pairs parents newto the dependency system with peer mentors to provide the newparents with additional support and education as they encounterthe child welfare process.  Prior to moving to Seattle, Jill workedfor the Cook County Juvenile Court Clinic (CCJCC), where shefacilitated requests for clinical information, evaluated parents’ability to surrender their parental rights, and provided training andconsulting on the CCJCC model.  She has worked internationallyhelping legal professionals interview traumatized prisoners andconducting mental health evaluations for incarcerated men andwomen in Malawi.  She holds a Master of Arts degree in ClinicalSocial Work from the School of Social Service Administration at theUniversity of Chicago and is licensed in the State of Washington.

John Wiesner is a Program Manager with Bridges Inc.  In this role,John coordinates and manages all aspects of clinical supervision,including monitoring quality assurance, maintaining policies andregulations as well as ensuring state and federal standards.  John isa qualified Program Manager and holds a certificate as a CertifiedAlcohol and Drug Counselor from the California Consortium ofAddiction Programs and Professionals located in Sacramento, CA. John has more than 10,000 hours of professional experience withinthe fields of counseling and recovery.  Before joining Bridges in2013, John worked at the rehabilitation facility in River City whileattending school.  John has had experience in the followingmodalities: STARS Case Management, Outpatient Treatment (Roomfor Dads), and Men’s Residential Treatment.  Passionate about long-term sobriety and its possibilities, John provides guidance andresources that help clients to become socially and economicallyindependent as well as assist with family reunification.
