Dual Credit/Dual Enrollment Programs in MS

• Dual Credit Student– a high school student enrolled in an eligible class through a college or university; student is simultaneously earning high school credit and college credit for a course

• Dual Enrollment Student– a high school student enrolled in a class through a college or university for college credit only

• 14 Core Units (minimum) and/or Junior status; with a 3.0 GPA in all courses

• In absence of 14 Core Units and/or Junior status: – a score of 30 ACT or equivalent with 3.0 GPA OR– 3.5 GPA in all courses

• Appropriate ACT/SAT (or equivalent) scores for placement

• District/school & institution student approval agreement (or recommendation) is needed before enrollment in the DC program.

Program Requirements for Continuation

• 3-12 credit hours per term recommended:– as long as a B average is earned in 1st two

approved courses– institution & district can waive maximum or

minimum based on sufficient student academic information

Approved Courses and Dual Credit

• The Approved Courses for Secondary Schools, 2012-2013 will be available on the website tentatively February 2012.

• Dual Credit (DC) courses will be aligned with course titles from Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL’s) and community and Junior Colleges (CJC’s).

• Equivalent courses will no longer be listed on high school transcripts.

• Each DC course will be labeled with DC in front of the IHL/CJC course (e.g., Psychology will be listed as “DC-Psychology” on high school transcripts).

Dual CreditContinued

• Articulation agreements should be established before students enroll in DC courses.

• Each DC course will count as 1 full Carnegie Unit. • Districts can still tie teachers to dual credit courses in

MSIS, even though the courses do not require endorsements.

• Career and Technical DC courses may have different listings, standards, and requirements. Contact the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Office for more information.

Documentation in MSIS

• For Dual Enrollment Only Students, districts may enter the course code “555555” in their local student data systems package to indicate that the students are taking a course that is not eligible for Carnegie Unit credit .

Documentation in MSIS

• The Average Daily Attendance (ADA) is not affected by dual credit, so long as the student is enrolled at the high school and present for at least 1 period per day. ADA is the number of students who attend school on a given day compared to the number actually enrolled.

• If the student is present at any time of the day, they are counted toward the school’s ADA.

Scenario 1

• Student A is taking Freshman Composition at Pearl River Community College (PRCC) for dual credit. The instructor is a PRCC instructor and the course is taught at PRCC. How would this be documented on the student’s transcript and in MSIS?

• The course would be listed as “DC-Freshman Composition” on the High School transcript.

• The Course code for “DC-Freshman Composition” would be entered into MSIS for this student. There is no need to tie this course or student to a teacher because the instructor is provided by PRCC.

Scenario 2

• A student is taking College Algebra at a high school for dual credit through Hinds Community College (HCC). The instructor is a high school teacher who is authorized to teach the course by HCC. How would this be documented on the transcript and in MSIS?

• The course will appear on the transcript as “DC-College Algebra”. It will count for 1 Carnegie Unit regardless of the amount of seat time actually completed in the course.

• The course code for “DC-College Algebra” should be entered into MSIS. The district can tie this course and student to the high school teacher’s schedule for documentation purposes.

Scenario 3

• A Student is taking “Criticism of Film” through the Mississippi State University (MSU) extension program. The student takes this course during 3rd period taught by an high school teacher authorized by MSU. Can this course be listed on the transcript and in MSIS?

• “Criticism of Film” is not a course eligible for dual credit. The student is taking this particular course as dual enrollment only. The course will not appear on the student transcript.

• This time can be accounted for on the student’s schedule and in MSIS by entering course code “555555”. A teacher can be tied to this code as well.
