GARDEN CONNECTION SPRING 2014 SPRING IS COMING! A LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT - JENNIFER RIORDAN I was hoping to open my letter with something about how much I enjoy spring, but it seems like we have several more weeks ahead of us before we begin to truly thaw out. 2013 was brought to a close with our annual Christmas Tea. Thank you Lisa Carter for hosting this lovely event again, and thank you Kelly Reif, Lauren Fasolo, Katie Bosco, Jeannie Weinstein, and Henrietta Pentz for organizing the event. Also I would like to WKDQN &DURO DW 2·FLH )ORUDO IRU GRQDWLQJ WKH EHDXWLIXO ER[ZRRG WUHHV WKDW ZH UDIÁHG off and @375 for donating some of the desserts. There were also many other ladies that volunteered to bring food and drink to the event. As with everything the Garden Club does, volunteers are so important to the success of our organization. In our busy lives it can seem impossible to carve out time to help, but there are several positions ZLWKLQ WKH RUJDQL]DWLRQ WKDW QHHG VRPH DWWHQWLRQ OLNH EHDXWLÀFDWLRQ ZHOFRPH DQG \DUG of the month. Also we will be looking for hosts and cooks for the Progressive dinner just like every year. If you think you might be interested in helping please contact [email protected]. Also the board is in the process of putting together an updated directory. The last published directory was sent out in 2010, and there have been so many new families move into Saybrook since then (many of them are on different committees within the Garden Club). Originally the directory was only going to be emailed but because of the efforts of Dawn Roche, we have procured enough sponsors to pay for the printing and provide a directory to all the Saybrook neighbors and Garden Club members. We hope to have the directories completed late March. There are fun events around the corner as the weather warms up, so I hope to see you all there! ANNUAL HOLIDAY GIVING IS ANOTHER BIG SUCCESS2013 SAYBROOK GARDEN CLUB HOLIDAY GIVING SUMMARY

Last year’s holiday giving program was a resounding success, thanks largely to Deb Wright who stepped into this Chair position at the 12th hour. There were several changes from years past, including having Bombola restaurant host the event and using the Target gift registry for purchasing gifts. We are hoping that both of these changes helped ease the holiday stresses, since no one had to host 80 people in their home and it streamlined the holiday buying. The auction raised $5,479.95. This money and the purchases made through Target were used to provide Christmas for 4 Beebe families. We also purchased ski pants and snow boots for those kids that didn’t have the. It also allowed us to purchase $2000 in gift cards for families at Jefferson Jr. High and Naperville North High School.

Last November was our 3rd Annual Saybrook Poker Tournament. It was a big success, raising over $1000 for those families in need. Congratulations to Darin Grubisic on winning the tournament. Thanks to all those who helped organize and make the event a success and for Betty Chan of @375 catering for the wonderful tiramisu, enjoyed by all.
