One of the most recent launches was Amanda O, Dori Media Contenidos’ first cross-platform telenovela (TV, Internet, and mobile devices). It has been watched over 800-thousand times by users in Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay, and has been sold to 22 countries. According to Dori, this production has been more effective than the big budget advertising campaigns in promoting its new telenovela site Novebox.com.
Telefe Int´l had previously incorpo-rated to its catalog Encandilados, a Cellenovela production aimed at teenagers over 15 who, unlike pre-adolescents, handle their own money and are in a position to spend it on this type of entertainment.
Univision.com and Endemol joined Amistad Productions to produce Vidas cruzadas, an interac-tive telenovela for Internet and
mobile devices, written by Estela Sainz and starring Hispanic stars, Kate del Castillo and Guy Ecker.
Venemobile is also producing tele-novelas for the net: Mentiras de Internet, a youth-oriented story produced in Venezuela; Querido profe, produced in Miami; and Mi último deseo, a 7-episode drama produced in Mexico.
RCTV Int´l has also been part of this phenomenon. A few years ago they produced Mujer secreta, an original telenovela especially created for the mobile devices market, with 160 ninety-second episodes aimed at users between the ages of 16 and 42.
SerieSMore recently, we have seen the creation of series by e-nnovva and 2&2: first, Almas perdidas (for Unilever), which logged more than 300 thousand unique users, and
now Contratiempo, a romantic comedy created with 2&2’s chooser format, which lets users decide how they want to view the story and affect the outcome of it.
In Mexico, a market with 23 million Internet users and 70 million mobile customers, Televisa launched its webseries, La doble vida, on its tvolucion.com portal. Produced by Pedro Damián, the story will have 13 new episodes this year.
At the same time, Frecuencia Latina Int´l added Dirígeme to its catalog. The series from the Container Group was nominated to the Inter-national Digital Emmy Awards.
Cris Morena Group and RGB Entertainment also entered the Internet and mobile devices market with Atrapados, a youth-oriented musical series, with 7-minute episodes that tell the story of the members of a young band.

The successful Mr. and Mrs. Pells has become one of the most successful telenovelas in recent times. Its original version has been sold in more then 20 countries, and its format has already been successfully adapted in Chile (photo), where it premiered with a 40% share. The story is being developed in Mexico, Poland, Russia, Ecuador, Colombia, Greece, Turkey, USA, and Spain.
Besides, a version with Mexican talent will be produced for to be exhibited by Televisa in Mexico and probably by Telemundo in U.S. Hispanic. This Endemol USA Latino product will be produced in Buenos Aires by Endemol Argentina, Underground and Telefe Int l.
This romantic comedy, produced by Telefe Contenidos, Endemol Argentina, and Underground, has also launched its MySpace Latinoamérica community. Fans can look up information about the show, learn more about the characters, see pictures and videos, and post comments. For the distributing house, Telefe International, this alliance with a carrier of alternative media such as MySpace provides a great complement, and allows them to develop television content that can converge on the net.
This June, Artear starts distributing content from Claxson-Media, which consists of a wide variety of genres. Some of the titles include: Boy’s toy (13x30min.), Nomad Kenya (10x30min.), Midnight sun (7x30min.), Living the dream in Polynesia (11x30min.), Travel in style (13x30min.), and Culinary adventures (11x30min.).
This programming is being presented at Discop 2009 in Budapest (stand #323), along with original productions already popular in Latin America and Europe. These include the series Tratame bien, (Be kind to me, 35x1),
Socias (More than partners, 26x1), Locas de amor (Crazy about love, 35x1), and the telenovelas 099 Central (Love in blue, 149x1), and Soy gitano (Gypsy blood, 250x1). All of them produced by Pol-ka.

Eastern and Central Europe has always been a good region for telenovelas, and more so now for two reasons. CME, the most important group in the region currently with 17 channels in Eastern Europe, is adding more channels, thus demanding more content; and the telenovela is a proven formula that provides quality and volume.
The other reason is that coun-tries that had stopped program-ming telenovelas at a national level, are now betting again on the canned genre. One example is Hungary, a country we could not get our telenovelas into for the past four years, is now open again.
During hard times, canned content distributors are a solution for the networks. We provide them
with high quality products with good cost-benefit. They can use these to substitute local produc-tions, which are the first things that get cut down.
Because of this, far from dropping, our sales are growing.
The most popular Latin American products are the telenovelas and the entertainment formats. Bailando por un sueño is on its eighth season in Romanian primetime, on its second season in the Ukraine, and its third in Serbia.
In regards to series, the region prefers the American product.

the classic novela. Every story has an audience and an outlet. What still differentiates us is still the element of humor and the fact that our scripts deal with universal stories that transcend borders.
There is also great demand for series. El cartel and Sin tetas no hay paraíso, considered the best series in Colombian television, have been sold in Eastern Europe.
The world of fiction formats has been gaining momentum and sales of Latin American scripts have become a new line of business that continues to grow. Sin tetas… has been adapted by Telemundo (U.S. Hispanic) and Telecinco (Spain), breaking viewership records. The adapta-tion of Pocholo in Greece is on its second season on Mega, and has become a phenomenon in the Greek family audience.
The economic recession promotes demand for entertainment formats with low productions costs. This year presents great challenges, and we have to be more creative with the products we present our clients. The interest in developing formats remains, the opportunity lies in how to create and adapt program-ming that fits the viewers’ taste.
Our most popular products in the region are El cartel, Sin tetas…, Pedro el escamoso, and Nuevo rico nuevo pobre, all of which have broken viewership records.

More slots for Latin American telenovelas
Eastern Europe is opening new slots for canned telenovelas and the demand for entertainment formats is on the rise. In some cases, they are also trying out series. Latin American distribution houses offer their views on the current reality of this important territory.

The genre is very strong in the region, especially in Romania and Bulgaria. Central Europe has increased the number of slots dedicated to telenovelas.
The sales of formats remain stable, although the majority of our clients prefer to buy ready-made products. The format of Amor descarado has been successfully produced in Greece, The Netherlands, Spain, and soon Russia and Poland.
The clients have chosen quality over length, so they have cut the total number of episodes in order to reduce costs. They want series of no more than 26 episodes that can be broadcast once or twice a week.
We have been very successful with entertainment formats such as Quinceañera, which sold in Croatia, Serbia, India, and Indonesia, among others; while 12 corazones is on its second season in Turkey, Colombia, and France.
Among our successful canned series, Victoria sold in 40 countries and has taken first place in its time slot in Spain, Georgia, Armenia, Latvia, and Estonia. La traición got 60% share in Bulgaria and took first place in Serbia, Armenia, Poland, and Georgia.

Buyers look for family-oriented telenovelas, with original and some kind of funny condiments. We have become very strong in producing content for teens and children, therefore broadcasters, specifically for ready-made content, look for series targeting this specific audience always containing a 360-degree business including the music as a key driver of the story.
Not more than 10 years ago we used to talk about the telenovela as
a genre itself. However, as time went by, niches had grown and I am proud to say that Telefe has become a pioneer in the development of telenovelas strictly segmented according to the programming time slots. We were the first to produce a telenovela for the primetime slot of 10pm oriented to men and women, and we have been innovators at developing content for teens and children.
Depending on the market, we focus our strategy on ready-made distribution or scripted formats, which may include production services or not. Russia and the CIS is a great example of a territory with enormous potential to develop our three sides of the international business. Despite going through a deep crisis, we still estimate the size of this market at around US$2 billion, very attractive.
Central Europe is a territory with enormous chances for the development of scripted formats, especially France, Italy and Spain, where we currently have optioned more than 15 different deals. Due to the crisis and the development of the digital platforms, we consider the distribution of ready-made content as an opportunity that has already grown and will continue to grow consequently.
As per Eastern Europe as a whole, the acquisition of ready-made content is basically more attractive and accessible. However, coun-tries such as Romania, Hungary and Poland, where we had already gone and are still going through production experiences, are attractive to explore both sides of the business.
