WebRTC FAQ What is WebRTC? WebRTC stands for Web Real-Time Communication. It is an open-source application interface that allows real-time services like voice, video, and data sharing to work natively within a web browser. In other words, connecting to a video conference is now as easy as visiting a web site. How do Vidtel solutions work with WebRTC? Vidtel MeetMe and Vidtel Gateway work natively with WebRTC. Vidtel’s cloud services accept WebRTC attendees and can include them either in a Vidtel MeetMe conference, or in a 3rd party video conferencing bridge, via Vidtel’s any-to-any Gateway service.

video What are the components in the solution? Vidtel provides the MeetMe and Gateway services in the cloud, in Vidtel’s worldwide data centers and POPs. WebRTC is built into the web browser; there is no soft client or plugin required. Vidtel partners may build custom user experiences or pages that contain WebRTC modules, to provide compelling or vertical-specific user experiences. How much does WebRTC support cost? There is no cost for WebRTC support. WebRTC support is included in Vidtel’s pricing for the MeetMe and Gateway services.

What browsers support WebRTC with Vidtel? Chrome support is included today on PCs and laptops. Firefox support will be supported in Q2 2013. Why is WebRTC so important to the video conferencing market? Two reasons: accessibility and innovation. Historical obstacles to video conferencing have been tied to the video endpoint equipment: high cost, high complexity, lack of multi-vendor integration, long R&D cycles, and lack of B2B solutions have all limited the takeup of video conferencing. With WebRTC, these obstacles vanish – with WebRTC and cloud-based conferencing, video conferencing has now been opened up to entirely new customers bases. And because making web pages with WebRTC support is so simple, we’re seeing a boom in innovation on the user experience of what a video endpoint can be – the innovation in web site design and experience is now brought to the video conferencing experience. How does Vidtel support WebRTC? Vidtel supports WebRTC like any other any-to-any supported endpoint. Vidtel provides full support of its MeetMe and Gateway services, and provides troubleshooting, diagnostic support, and training to its partner base. Vidtel does not require any plugin or downloads on the web browser in order to support WebRTC. WebRTC calls can be made directly from the browser. How can I try Vidtel web-based video with WebRTC? Vidtel provides an WebRTC page at http://www.vidtel.com/call. Attendees can use this page with a Chrome browser to enter their conference bridge and join a Vidtel MeetMe conference.

What is the status of the WebRTC standard? WebRTC continues to evolve within the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and the IETF. Vidtel is monitoring these standards discussions closely, and will adapt our service as needed as WebRTC evolves. I am having quality issues with the Vidtel WebRTC service. Is this a Vidtel issue? Vidtel only controls the MeetMe and Gateway services. The WebRTC implementation in Chrome (and later Firefox and other browsers) is outside of Vidtel’s control. If users see jitter or other issues with WebRTC calls, it is possible that this could be due to the browser implementation, inadequate network bandwidth, or it could be an issue with the Vidtel service. Vidtel support will assist with definition and localization of any issues, and with resolution of the issue if it is on the Vidtel service.
