Fireworks display to cap 53rd festival

The 2011 Nautical Days and the Filberg Festival celebrations will once again provide a fun-filled, family-oriented weekend for resi-dents and tourists alike to enjoy during this B.C. Day Holiday weekend in beauti-ful Comox By The Sea.

We like to think that our Town truly sparkles at this time of the year and with the large influx of people coming to our com-munity, we like to say “Wel-come,” “Enjoy,” and we look forward to your return.

On behalf of Council and our Town staff, I offer a very heartfelt “thank-you” to all the organizers and volun-teers for the time and effort they so generously donate to make these two signa-ture events a huge success. Without you these festivities would not be possible.

So, have fun and stay safe!

Yours truly,

Paul Ives Mayor

Message from the MayorRecord Staff

One of the most-anticipated events of the year in Comox really ends with a bang after three fun-filled days.

The 53rd annual Nautical Days will end as usual with a series of bangs as Quality Foods again presents the Spectacular Festival of Lights, the biggest fireworks dis-play on Vancouver Island.

During the July 30 to Aug. 1 event, festival mascot Captain Cracker will preside at Marina Park over the Bullhead Derby, canoe jousting, dragon boat racing and the ever-popular Build, Bail and Sail Race. As usual, there’s so much more, including an exciting lineup of entertainment on the mainstage and fun activities for children.

The 25th annual Bullhead Derby, the largest catch-and-release fishing derby in the Pacific Northwest, gets things going on the morning of July 30. The 2010 derby attracted nearly 500 young and young-at-heart participants angling for top honours in catego-ries ranging from largest fish to strangest catch.

Participants supply their fish-ing pole and barbless hooks and bait — Nautical Days provides the jovial spirit of friendly competition.

On the same morning, kids of all ages, whether anglers or not, will enjoy Captain Cracker’s Kids’ Fes-tival. It’s got games, races, crafts, clowns, pet parade, face-painting and kid’s rides.

Canoe jousting returns in the afternoon of the 30th. Two-person teams — a paddler and a jouster

— combine agility, balance, team-work, speed and striking power to stay afloat.

The much-anticipated dragon boat races are a huge hit with all Nautical Days goers. The long boats glide across the waves while the deep beat of the drums keep time for the paddlers. Teams from across Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland will compete.

Build, Bail and Sail — where failure gets the loudest applause — takes centre stage at the marina ramp on B.C. Day Monday. More than a dozen two-man teams will try to craft any sort of sea-faring vessel with the meagre materials

and hand tools at their disposal, and then race them around the Comox Marina entrance.

The hilarity is always intense in this competition, where simply staying afloat often wins the race.

An animated weekend of fun in the sun concludes Monday night with the cadets and staff of HMCS Quadra presenting the Sunset Ceremony of the Flags, whose his-tory and traditions go back several hundred years. The Festival of Lights concludes the weekend.

Also back by popular demand will be the King — or at least the next best thing.

Crowd-pleasing Elvis imper-

sonator Steve Elliott performs the Gospel of Elvis on Sunday after-noon, Elvis’ Family Show Monday afternoon and Viva Las Vegas on Monday evening as part of the Nautical Days finale.

It seems hard to believe, but the annual celebration of the town’s seafaring history offers so much more in its three days.

There’s a car show, bistro-style beer garden each day, the longest-running foot race in B.C. and an interdenominational church service that last year attracted more than 1,000 worshippers.

For more information, visit www.comoxnauticaldays.ca.

Piracy, sinking expected at annual BB&S eventScott Stanfield Record Staff

The Build, Bail & Sail once again takes centre stage at the marina ramp on B.C. Day Monday.

Sixteen, two-person teams will try to craft a sea-faring vessel with a scarce selection of materials and hand tools at their disposal. They will then race their creations around the Comox Marina entrance.

The event promises an assortment of interesting creations and no shortage of shipwrecks.

Staying afloat is typically all it takes to win the race, which is in its 24th year. It is sponsored by Central Builders/Home Hardware.

“The only thing that has changed is the participants,” said race organizer John Van Egmond, flooring manager at Central Builders who will

emcee the event along with Marty Douglas.

The Build, Bail & Sail often draws thousands of spectators.

There will be four heats of four teams, followed by

an exhibition heat and the final. Van Egmond hopes to have four teams in the exhibition race, which so far includes a team from his store and Team Mazda, which sank on the dock last

year. By Saturday, teams will

have selected $85 worth of materials free of charge at Central Builders. Styro-foam and sheet metal is not allowed. Contestants need

to think of everything from the ship to the oars. In past years, boat-makers have used plastic shopping bags, door skins, pipe, drywall screws and duct tape, among other items.

“I wouldn’t recommend chicken wire,” said Van Egmond, who one year built a cardboard boat that “sunk like a stone” on the second race.

He cautions that “acts of piracy” can be expected come race day.

At 9 a.m. Monday at the marina parking lot, partici-pants will have three-and-a-half hours to build their vessels using hand tools only. Racing begins at 1 p.m.

The aim is to row the ves-sel to a buoy at the break-water. Teammates then switch spots in the boat and paddle back to shore.

“If you come to watch peo-ple flailing around uncom-fortably, you’ve come to the right spot,” Van Egmond said.

Along with the top-three finishers, prizes include the first-to-sink and best-built awards.

THE BUILD, BAIL & SAIL is expected to draw a huge crowd at the Marina Park boat ramp on B.C. Day Monday.

A trio of Main Stage tributes to the KingSteve Elliot — Canadian grand

champion Elvis tribute artist — returns for three Main Stage performances on Sunday and Mon-day. Sunday is The Gospel of Elvis while Monday features the Elvis Elite Family Show in the after-noon and Viva Las Vegas shortly before the fireworks finale.

Born and raised in Nanaimo, Elliot had many artistic abili-ties before stumbling upon his career as a singer and enter-tainer. In 1995, he became the top political cartoonist in B.C. for his caricatures, freelancing in various weekly publications for the Van-couver Net chain of community newspapers.

With no prior singing abilities, he walked into a karaoke contest at a mall and was intrigued by the performers caught in their acts. The contest was set in the era of classic rock and and early croon-ers. Elliott decided to enter at the last minute — and discovered he had a natural ability to sing and

entertain. He won a prize set of Elvis

albums and discovered the raw-ness and sensualities in Presley’s voice, which led him to his new-found career as a performer. Since then, Elliott has perfected his act as a tribute artist using the energyin Presley’s music to express to audiences of all ages.

Elliott has been a performer since 2000, traveling full-time with his Elvis Elite show throughout North America. In 2004, he won the Grand Canadian Champion-ship of the Pacific Northwest Elvis Festival in Penticton.

With authentic and original costumes created by his mother, the Elvis Elite show brings a fresh and thrilling experience to the greatest and most universal per-former that ever lived.

The Gospel of Elvis is set for 12:30 p.m. Sunday. The family show is at 3 p.m. Monday and Viva Las Vegas begins at 9 p.m. Monday.

Derby largest of its kindThe ever-popular Nauti-

cal Days children’s Bullhead Derby is the largest catch-and-release event of its kind in the Pacific Northwest.

Last year’s derby drew nearly 500 young and young-at-heart participants angling for top honours in categories ranging from largest fish to strangest catch.

Participants supply their fishing pole, barbless hooks and bait, while Nautical Days provides the jovial spirit of friendly competi-tion.

The 25th annual event begins Saturday, July 30 at 8:30 a.m. at the government wharf.

The adventure for the bullhead derby, though, isn’t

just the thrill of the chase or the fun of learning some-thing new.

It’s seeing what little ones might bring out of the water in their pursuit of the ugly fish.

There are always inter-esting finds including a vari-ety of sea creatures, such as colorful starfish and crabs, and interesting ‘treasures’ dropped by the people above. There have been tires, boots and other surprising finds as part of the morning’s catch.

While other sea creatures are returned to the water, and junk is properly dis-posed of— bullhead, tom cod, greenling, flatfish, rockfish or perch are brought to the official measuring station in a provided plastic bag filled

with seawater so they can be measured, recorded and then released.

Following the derby, a special Main Stage presen-tation will be held at noon to celebrate the annual event.

Trophies will be award-ed to the winners of the Derby and dozens of prizes will be handed out to anglers, who find a ‘special prize fish’ in their registra-tion package.

Registration for the bullhead derby takes place between 8 and 9 a.m. at the check-in booth at Marina Park. Participants can speed up the line by filling out the form on Page 7.

All fishing rods, barbless hooks and bait must be pro-vided by the entrants.

THE 25TH ANNUAL Bulhead Derby always attracts hundreds of youngsters to the marina.
