04 WEDNESDAY 1 JULY 2020BUSINESS

Official data released earlier this month showed that new car registrations on German roads alone fell 16.1 percent y-o-y between January and May, to 2.5 million.

“The long road to normalcy is miles and miles away and the journey is a hazardous one as already a second wave of the pandemic virus has made some states backtrack on their reopening plans,” said Chris Rupkey, chief economist at MUFG in New York.

US consumer confidence perks up; risingCOVID-19 cases cast shadow over recoveryREUTERS — WASHINGTON

US consumer confidence rebounded in June as businesses reopened, strengthening views that the economic downturn was likely over, though rising COVID-19 infections threaten to derail the budding recovery.

The survey from the Con-ference Board yesterday fol-lowed a sharp surge in hiring and consumer spending in May. The housing market and man-ufacturing have also improved.

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell on Monday acknowledged the rebound in activity, saying the economy had “entered an important new phase and (had) done so sooner than expected.” In remarks pre-pared for a congressional hearing on Tuesday, the US central bank chief cautioned that the economic outlook “is extraordinarily uncertain” and would depend on “our success in containing the virus.”

The economy slipped into recession in February. Busi-nesses have largely reopened after being shuttered in mid-March to slow the spread of the coronavirus. Large parts of the country, including densely pop-ulated California, Texas and Florida have reported a surge in cases of the respiratory illness. Some states are scaling back or pausing business

reopenings.“The long road to normalcy

is miles and miles away and the journey is a hazardous one as already a second wave of the pandemic virus has made some states backtrack on their reo-pening plans,” said Chris Rupkey, chief economist at MUFG in New York.

The Conference Board said its consumer confidence index rose to a reading of 98.1 this month from 85.9 in May. Still, the confidence index remains 34.5 points below its pre-pan-demic level.

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast the index rising to 91.8 in June.

The survey’s present situation measure, based on consumers’ assessment of current business and labor market conditions, increased to a reading of 86.2 this month from 68.4 in May.

The expectations index based on consumers’ short-term outlook for income, business and labor market con-ditions jumped to 106.0 from a reading of 97.6 in May.

Stocks on Wall Street were

trading higher on the confi-dence data. The dollar was lower against a basket of cur-rencies. U.S. Treasury prices were marginally lower.

The Conference Board’s so-called labor market differential, derived from data on respondents’ views on whether jobs are plentiful or hard to get, improved to a reading of -3 this month from -12.7 in May. That measure closely correlates to the unemployment rate in the L a b o r D e p a r t m e n t ’ s employment report.

It has dropped from as high as 38.3 in August last year.

The pandemic has unleashed record unem-ployment, with 30.6 million people collecting unem-ployment checks in the first week of June. The closely fol-lowed employment report to be released on Thursday is expected to show 3 million jobs created in June on top of the 2.5 million added in May, according to a Reuters survey of econo-mists. That would still leave payrolls nearly 17 million below their pre-COVID-19 level. The jobless rate is forecast dipping to 12.3 percent from 13.3 percent in May.

The Conference Board survey showed the percentage of consumers expecting an increase in income in the short term climbed to 15.1 percent this month from 14.6 percent in May and the proportion anticipating a drop fell to 14.4 percent from 15.4 percent.

Manufacturing is also stabi-lizing with a separate report yesterday showing a steady pick-up in factory activity in the Midwest. The MNI Indicators’ Chicago Business Barometer rose to a reading of 36.6 in June from 32.3 in May.

Activity in the second quarter, however, slipped 11.8 points to 34.8, the lowest level since Q1 2009.

Norwegian scrubs $10.6bn deal in threat to Boeing MaxBLOOMBERG

Norwegian Air Shuttle ASA notified Boeing Co. that the carrier is terminating purchases for all 97 of its remaining jets on order, underscoring the financial strains caused by a 15-month grounding of the 737 Max after two fatal accidents.

In more bad news for Boeing, Singapore-based lessor BOC Aviation Ltd. said in a filing yesterdday that it was scrubbing an order for 30 Max jets and deferring other deliveries.

As cash-strapped carriers seek to halt or postpone jet-liner deals, the grounded Max makes the U.S. planemaker more vulnerable than Airbus SE to single-aisle cancella-tions. Buyers often have the right to walk away from deliv-eries that have been delayed more than a year without risk of penalties, and for some 737 customers that’s potential lev-erage to gain a cash set-tlement from Boeing rather than discounts on future orders.

“Boeing is walking a fine line,” Douglas Harned, an analyst at Sanford C. Bern-stein, said in response to Nor-wegian’s move.

“Our understanding is that others are looking to sue as well. While Boeing could pursue a technical legal

argument that these are excusable delays, we doubt it would want that debate out in public,” he said. “But, we also do not expect Boeing to roll over and set a precedent that it would return progress pay-ments to any airline that wants them in an environment where no one wants deliveries.”

Boeing dropped 5.2 percent to $184.35 at 10:51 am in New York. Shares of the US planemaker had surged 14 percent on Monday on the first test flight toward recer-tification of the Max. The single-aisle workhorse has been grounded since March 2019 following two deadly crashes.

Norwegian’s decision covers 92 of Boeing’s Max narrow-body planes, five of the long-distance 787 Dream-liners and a related

maintenance pact, the carrier said in a statement. The airline, which last month reached a rescue deal with its lenders after the Covid-19 virus decimated air travel, also threatened to turn to the courts to gain pre-delivery payments for the jets plus compensation tied to the Max’s 15-month idling.

The termination roils Boe-ing’s relationship with one of its largest customers in Europe, even if Norwegian’s financial troubles had cast doubt on its ability to take all the planes. The airline has converted about $1.5bn of debt into equity and accessed gov-ernment loan guarantees to stave off a collapse.

As part of the rescue, Nor-wegian plans to shrink its fleet from its current 160 aircraft. It’s also put a halt to most of its

long-haul flights until April 2021. This month, the carrier said it would restart 76 routes in Europe as travel restrictions were eased, allowing it to tap into the usually lucrative summer season when millions of Europeans fly.

Talks with Boeing have “not led to an agreement with a reasonable compensation,” Norwegian said in the statement. The aircraft are worth at least $10.6bn based on list prices, before cus-tomary discounts.

Norwegian is still seeking to work out an agreement with Boeing on compensation, a person familiar with the matter said. The carrier hasn’t decided whether to continue using the 18 737 Max aircraft that it already has in its fleet once the plane is re-certified, said the person, who asked not to be named citing confiden-tiality. Norwegian had earlier planned to use the Max on short-haul as well as trans-Atlantic routes that it no longer plans to pursue, the person said.

“We are not going to comment on commercial dis-cussions with our customers,” Chicago-based Boeing said in a statement. “Norwegian Air Shuttle is a longstanding Boeing customer. As with many operators dealing with a very challenging time, we are working on a path forward.”

Gold climbs

above $1,800

for the first

time since 2011BLOOMBERG

Gold futures rose above $1,800 an ounce for the first time in eight years as low interest rates and a resur-gence in coronavirus cases drive demand for the metal as a haven.

The metal is heading for its best quarter since early 2016, benefiting from eco-nomic stimulus from the Federal Reserve and other central banks, simmering US-China trade frictions and renewed concern over eco-nomic fallout from the coro-navirus. Investors also con-tinue to pile into gold-backed exchange-traded funds, with holdings at a record.

“The $1,800 level is a psychological hurdle,” said Howie Lee, an economist at Oversea-Chinese Banking Corp. in Singapore. “Low interest rates, monetary pol-icies and the coronavirus are all at play.” Bullion for August delivery reached $1,802.80 at 11:20 am on the Comex in New York, the highest for a most-active contract since November 2011. The move extends this year’s advance to 18 percent and marks a breakout from a months-long trading range.

Volkswagen ends shorter-hours scheme at German factoriesAFP — FRANKFURT AM MAIN

German car giant Volkswagen said yesterday its German factories would end in July a shorter hours scheme used to cushion the impact of the coro-navirus pandemic as production ramps back up.

After around 80,000 workers’ hours were slashed from March, a remaining cohort of around 20,000 at VW’s own-brand passenger cars, utility vehicles and components works will also return to normal schedules at sites across Europe’s top economy, the sprawling 12-brand group said in a statement.

At present, production levels in the German factories stand at between 75 and 95 percent of pre-coronavirus levels, VW said.

But with the outlook for the car industry uncertain as busi-nesses and consumers emerge from months of infection-control lockdown, “we’ll con-tinue to manage production very precisely according to how markets develop and customer

demand,” VW brand production and logistics chief Andreas Tostmann said.

Official data released earlier this month showed that new car registrations on German roads alone fell 16.1 percent year-on-year between January and May, to 2.5 million.

Sales were down almost 50 percent on May 2019 last month, after a more than 60-percent drop in April and almost 40 in March. A similar picture has been seen across Europe and further afield, after the pandemic hit an already shrinking global car market.

Looking to other major car-makers’ German operations, BMW told AFP that workers were still on shorter hours “here and there” in June, for a total around 4,000 compared with over 30,000 in April and May.

Menswear shop T.M. Lewin to close all UK stores, go online only

REUTERS — LONDON

British shirt shop T.M. Lewin will close all its stores and go online only, its restructurer said yesterday, resulting in around 600 redundancies as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to hammer the high street.

The deal will see 66 stores close as the online business is sold to Torque Brands, an acquisiton arm of Stonebridge Private Equity, in a pre-pack administration.

“We are pleased to have been able to save the online business of this great British retail brand at a time when the High Street is

experiencing such difficulties and many brands may disappear com-pletely,” said Cameron Gunn, senior partner at restructuring firm ReSolve.

Founded in 1898, the menswear retailer had been bought by private equity firm Stonebridge Capital Partners from Bain Capital in May, with its future uncertain as Britain’s coronavirus lockdown closed all non-essential stores from late March until June.

Torque Brands said that T.M. Lewin had not been a viable going concern in its old format, with the business unable to sustain rental agreements.
