The clinic involved over 250 Primary school students from surrounding areas like Cathedral College and Chisholm St Primary as well as the Wangaratta & District Special School.

Our Year 11s worked with various age groups and abilities of students during the clinics. This gave them valuable insight into the different ways children learn, being able to modify activities to cater for different skill levels and being flexible

Humanities studentsreflect on Holocaust

Last week, both Miss Sykes and Mr Turnbull’s year 10 Humanities classes participated in a Holocaust museum task. Students were given the opportunity to explore sources from the Holocaust including photographs, video interviews and music. With great reverence students rotated between the sources recording what each piece was, what it reveals about the topic and its historical context. The symbolism of performing this task in the Galen Chapel, provided a contrast to the freedom of worship we experience versus the persecution of the Jewish people. A candle of remembrance was also lit for the victims.

Year 10 Humanities students Ella Kent and Ellie Laffy recently learnt about the horrors of the Holocaust through historical photos, video and audio material.

Old CollegiansOld Collegian Emily Remnant was recently a recipient of a Federal Government Science & Innovation Award for young people in Agri-culture, Fisheries and Forestry. Emily received $22,000 towards her work and research into bees. Article below sourced from The Weekly Times 8/3/17 p.20

On Thursday March 2nd 17 girls in Year 11 attended the 11th Annual Zonta Careers Breakfast. The morning was an opportunity for girls to network with women in a variety of careers. The Keynote speakers had all studied in Wangaratta secondary schools and included Caitlin Sartori, a journalist for the Wangaratta Chronicle; Justine Pickles, an occupational therapist in Benalla who shared her interesting experiences when working as a paramedic, and Belinda Hayward, a former Galen student who is a local Hairdresser and business owner. The Yr 11 girls found the experience rewarding and were able to take valuable information about persevering, pursuing dreams, following interests, and pathways to the career of their choice.

Year 11 VCAL take part in PARTY ProgramYear 11 VCAL students recently took part in the PARTY program, a program for students in rural areas that addresses road trauma and injury in young people and educates students about prevention and management of emergency situations.

Students found the day to be a valuable experience, and particularly enjoyed hearing the personal story of road trauma victim Jacob who has recovered from his experience of being the victim of a road accident.

Some comments from the students were:“It was eye-opening and Interesting” Sara Corker “I really enjoyed the personal stories” Chloe Robinson

“It was inspirational” Brandon Igri

SPACFI’s Integrated Community Development Program helped her develop diverse ways to gain a sustainable livelihood, continue to send her children to school and contribute to her community. Now she inspires her neighbours through her commitment to the common good.

The origin of St. Joseph’s Banner still has some mystery associ-ated with its purpose and creation. The banner is made on a backdrop of dark green gabardine type fabric and the fawn and red colours used for lettering, the symbolic Brigid’s Cross and the lamp in the middle of the cross on the badge commonly used by Brigidine schools, are in keeping with the colours of St. Joseph’s College uniform. The words ‘Firmly and Gently’ were the motto of the Brigidine sisters at the time. Nowadays it is commonly expressed as ‘Strength and Gentleness.’

At one time the banner hung in the upstairs chapel at Galen College and more recently it was displayed in the Junior Library building (the new Senior Study Centre). It was often used for teaching the founding story of our schools in the Year 7 RE unit called ‘Belonging.’ The College has a photo of both the Brigidine Banner and the Marist Shield (currently displayed in the walk-way between the administration block and the arts/technology wing) being used at the Opening School Mass in 2002 when Fr. Tony Hill was Chaplain.

According to Mrs Elaine Brown-Graham, past teacher at both St. Joseph’s and Galen College, the banner was made by Michelle (D’Antonio) Bordignon and Therese (Edwards) Brown-Graham when they were head girl and assistant head girl in either 1977 or 1978, probably 1978. The girls would have been in year 10, the senior year of the College at that time – after that students went to the Senior Galen College. This date is supported by Mrs Cath Cutler (Mr Geoff Welch’s mother-in-law), the first lay teacher at St Joseph’s. Mrs Cutler taught sewing, retired in 1977 and believes the banner was made after that date.

Neither Michelle nor Therese remembers much about making the banner nor who supervised their efforts or assisted with the sewing. Michelle remembers using the banner in parades but cannot recall the specific occasion for which it was made.

Mrs Brown-Graham thought the banner may have been made to celebrate one of the Sister’s feast days but Sr Rosemary Kerlin, the Principal of St. Joseph’s at the time, believes it was more likely made for the Brigidine sports days when the various Brigidine schools marched behind their school’s banner. It was a common practice for the various religious orders to have an interschool sports day during this period.

As part of honouring our founding traditions, it is hoped to display the Brigidine Banner again when the building program allows for a suitable area. The banner will serve as a permanent reminder of our rich heritage for students, staff, parents and visitors to our College. At the Lake Hume retreat, we did a variety of activities within our homeroom groups including canoeing and archery. These activities were a good opportunity to work together as a team and also to have some friendly competitions. We also did activities within our smaller groups that were calmer and involved a lot of talking. In our small groups, we talked about a variety of topics including personal hardships, our families and surviving year 12. This offered everyone the opportunity to get to know others on a more personal level and to under-stand why they are the way they are.

The Lake Hume retreat was home to a pair of ostriches named June and Grace. They were very friendly, yet many retreat participants had mixed feelings about them, from, “they were terrible” to “I loved them”.

On the second night at the retreat, some of the students, as well as Ms Code shared ghost stories which frightened many, but inspired others.

Each retreat group created a banner to symbolise their time at the retreat. The Lake Hume banner incorporated a river to symbolise our journey through life and was also relevant to one of the year 12 English texts, Cloudstreet.

Year 12 Retreat will be something that I will treasure especially throughout this next year. After this retreat I now know that we can all lean on each other for support over the coming year and that we will never be alone. My goals for this year and the future are now more clear as well as my relationships with others surrounding me.

Jubilee Junior GolfJubilee Golf Club is currently running Junior Golf Clinics on Friday afternoons at 5pm till about 7pm during daylight saving and school terms. Parents don’t need to pay for golfing equip-ment as Jubilee will supply junior sized clubs for 5 to 16 year old boys or girls, left or right handers, plus other equipment. The clinics cease during school holidays and re-commence on the first Friday after school returns. We have parents and grandparents who come out for a pleas-ant late afternoon walk around part of the course to watch their children or grandchildren play a few holes and it is a great bonding experience for all concerned. There is a cost of $5.00 for each junior player per Friday night. Some of this money goes back to weekly winners of our competitions and the rest towards trophies and other golfing goods at the end of each year. For $5.00 you get tuition, the free use of golfing equipment, tees and balls and time out on the course playing golf which makes this very good value. We can train up to 30 children in all aspects of golf and the first night will be free. Don’t miss out, call Ashley Neave, PGA Professional on 57 253 258 for further inquiries about the junior golf program. Only 20 spots left.
