Food Tasting - Yr 8 IndonesianThis term in Year 8 Indonesian students are learning all about Indonesian foods. Throughout the term they will learn how to order food in Indonesian, read Indonesian recipes and they will even get to cook some traditional Indonesian dishes. On Tuesday 11th February students were given the opportunity to try several Indonesian foods. Below are some student comments from the day!

My favourite food was the Kopiko (coffee lollies) and the chilli sauce. My least favourite was the Rambutan (small red fruit) and the Longan (Indonesian fruit). The thing I enjoyed most about the Indonesian foods was getting to try new foods that I haven’t tried. I would really love doing this again. – Ella McCarthy

We had taste testing today in Indonesian. We tasted some fruits, chocolate, Indonesian coffee lollies and some other things. The chilli sauce was mild but very hot to most of the class. The chocolate ‘Pocky’ sticks, the coffee lollies and the mango tasted the best by far. – Cooper Verdon

I thoroughly enjoyed the Indonesian food tasting activity. My favourtie foods were ‘Pocky’, Kopiko, Kerupuk and Sambal. They were very delicious and tasty. My least favourite foods were Papaya, Rambutan and Longan. Overall, the Indonesian food tasting was great and a fun experience for me. I tried many new foods I wouldn’t normally have tried without doing this experiment. I hope we do more activities like this in the future. – Billie Taylor

Some of the foods we tried today were really nice. My favourite was chocolate bisquits. My least favourite would be the paw-paw because it had a bad texture and tasted disgusting. What I enjoyed about the day is that it was fun and we got to try different foods. – Nathan Lau

Junior School NewsLauren Lee - Junior School Director

A big thank you to all of the parents who were able to attend the Year 7 open afternoon last week. It was fantastic to see so many of you there and we were glad to hear that your students are settling in well. Please remember that we are happy to hear from you if you have any concerns or if you have any positives that we should be aware of.

School uniform and hats have been very good and it has been great to have most parents follow up straight away when uniform infringement notes were sent home. Please remember that if there is an issue with uniform a note should be sent to the homeroom teacher explaining the issue and when it will be possible to rectify the situation.

Lastly a reminder to parents to have a conversation with your children about the importance of locking their lockers. The lockers are provided to allow students to store all personal items. Computers should also be stored in lockers at any time they are not being used. We have already had a few incidents where students have misplaced their computers and then been fairly stressed while trying to find them.

Junior Library NewsThe Junior Library has revamped the furniture in the research end of the library. Gone are the light green rectangular tables which have graced the library for the past 8 years, and in their place are bright primary colours in a crescent moon shape. The vibrant colours lift the library and the promote a cheerful learning environment. The unusual crescent shape allows the tables to be configured in endless arrangements – constantly altering the learning space. The response from the staff and students has been overwhelmingly positive.

Year 12 students began the year formally at the Wangaratta Perform-ing Arts Centre, with their annual VCE/VCAL Jumper and Award Presentation evening last Wednesday.

Erin Linley a former Galen student (pictured right), as special guest speaker delivered an engaging speech. Her delivery was underpinned by the theme of curiosity and bravery and she encouraged all to be life-long learners. She impressed upon the students the importance of persistent hard work, the challenge of juggling many interests and the value of prioritizing these during the year and to appreciate the wonderfully fertile and nourishing community that Galen College provides.

Students were also encouraged to focus on the importance of supporting one another on their journey throughout the year.

Prior to the presentation of the jumpers, the VCE academic awards for 2013 were presented, including Dux for 2013, Sean Bartlett.

Additionally Eliza Honybun received an award from Latrobe University for academic performance and contribution to the school community.

College Captains for 2014, were also officially announced. Successful candidates Annie Brien and Lachie McKellar were both very honoured to be given the opportunity to represent Galen as student leaders this year.

The start to the year has been terrific. Students have been keen to embrace their studies and participated enthusiastically in the retreats held last week.

Year 11 students have received details about the upcoming Driver Education Camp conducted in Shepparton. It is important that the forms associated with this activity are completed and returned to school promptly please.

Valentine’s Day Caritas FundraiserOn Friday 14th February Galen was awash with over 240 red heart-shaped balloons. 8/6, Claire Knox (9/5) and Ms Howard arrived at the school early on Valentine’s Day to inflate over 240 with helium. During homeroom the students of 8/6 delivered the balloons across the school. Some balloons came with romantic messages and some were sent anonymously. The students of 8/6 made a profit of $460 for Caritas, which ensured that the gift of a balloon goes beyond the lucky recipients at Galen. Congratulations goes to the students of 8/6 for their hard work in promoting the fundraiser and a big thank you goes to all who supported the fundraiser.
