Many Bentley customers believe they have obtained their wealth because of luck. So says Bentley Motors Ltd›s new

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Adrian Hallmark, during an interview in Geneva. “I have recognized that a lot of our customers follow a similar thing: They are super-successful. And a lot of them think it’s because they’re lucky,” he says. “That’s really important, because they don’t think they’re above human weakness and frailty.”

Such perceived (and believed) good fortune is spurring the world›s million-aires and billionaires to make luxury purchases, based on a system of values such as reduced carbon footprints and sustainability, he adds. According to Hallmark, hybrid and electric cars allow them to express in a novel way, he says.

“There is a new dimension long-term in the purchase decision-the ethical value,” Hallmark says, referring to gleanings from a 2008 internal study Bentley did of the world›s wealthiest people. “Electrification is part of it, and electrification isn›t going away.”

In fact, this new addition to the tra-ditional considerations for buying a luxury car — performance, quality mate-rials, and craftsmanship — is manifesting so strongly among the world’s top 1 percent that it is influencing Bentley’s product planning for the next two decades.

The company debuted its Bentayga Hybrid, a mid-six-figure SUV that can run 31 miles on purely electric power, recently at the Geneva Auto Show. By 2025, all Bentley cars will offer some version of an electric drivetrain, Hallmark says. That includes its growling 12-cylinder Continental GT line, the latest generation of which is due out early next year. It may take up to a decade to make an electric version of such a car, but the way Hallmark sees it, Bentley has no choice.

“We already know that the [next version] will be a battery electric vehicle,” he says. “It will have all of those moral and ethical benefits with it. By not going that way, even if we don›t have to, we would be massively under-per-forming in terms of customer potential.”

Of course, the Crewe, England-based brand isn›t the only one to reckon that, in addition to being more efficient, electric power bestows a mark of honor upon its best clients.

Top luxury automakers have been producing hybrid and electric vehicles for years, such as BMW›s i8, Porsche›s 918 Spyder Hybrid, and Mercedes-Benz›s sold-out Project 1.

We take it for granted that a fair

number of wealthy car buyers admire electric power, thanks to the cool cachet of Tesla Inc. But not long ago, electrics were viewed as anathema by serious car people, who favoured traditional air-cooled engines with their guttural roars and grit. Then Toyota’s Prius introduced the modern electric car to a broad audience. That one, with its awkward angles and gutless drive train, made electric cars feel like medicine we took with eyes closed and a quick swallow.

The few electrics that did get car fanatics excited were rather fragile, million-dollar hypercar one-offs that spent more time in the garage than on the road. These days, well-heeled buyers consider a hybrid or plug-in vehicle a crucial part of a well-rounded garage.

“It is definitely high-performance with sustainability that resonates on a values and ethics level … with affluent and wealthy automotive buyers,” says Milton Pedraza, founder of the Man-hattan-based Luxury Institute, which studies trends of the world’s rich.

Witness Porsche’s upcoming Mission E, an electric-powered sedan that the automaker has hyped for years and

plans to unveil on the eve of its also much-hyped 70th anniversary. It will probably cost more than the $90,000-plus Panamera, and while its driving range and battery power remains obscured, it will undoubtedly be a car to impress with next year.

Among Porsche’s notoriously rabid fans, it will be the only new model that could divert attention from the usual adulation attending icons such as the brand’s GT3, 911R, or 930. More crucial on a broader scale, if Porsche delivers on its promise, it’ll be the first sedan to challenge Tesla’s Model S in terms of sales volume.

Or take Aston Martin Lagonda, which has announced it’s turning an entire heritage brand, Lagonda, into an electric powerhouse. The wedge-shaped Lagonda Vision Concept that debuted in Geneva is an all-electric sedan that marks how Aston expects the long-extinct brand to look when it returns.

Aston Martin hasn’t divulged many details about the new car, which, after all, is only a conceptual exercise, but Andy Palmer, President and Chief Exec-utive Officer of Aston Martin Lagonda

Ltd, says it will get 400 miles on one charge-enough to drive from Los Angeles to San Francisco in one sitting, with self-driving capability and zero emissions.

“The Lagonda Vision Concept is our plan for the rebirth of a great brand,” he says. “It’s a new kind of luxury car.”

Some of the most prestigious brands are holding off on electric for now. McLaren’s Global Head of Sales, Jolyon Nash, recently said no way, not ever (probably). Automobili Lamborghini’s chief engineer, Maurizio Reggiani, says it would take quite a lot of persuasion for the brand to make anything electric in the near future. Bugatti Automobiles SAS’s Stephan Winkelmann, who inci-dentally came from Lamborghini by way of Audi Sport, said “it›s too early to talk about” electrification at Bugatti, though he recognizes the potential.

“We are not influencing this dis-cussion, but we take this very seri-ously,” he says. “It’s something to look into.”

Stephanie Brinley, senior analyst for IHS Markit, takes it all with a grain of salt. Some of the “ethical value”

status symbol talk is hopeful thinking and marketing, she says. After all, car companies have invested billions in electrification; They have a lot riding on their ability to sell the story that a massive, expensive hybrid SUV is cool, not just “eco-friendly”. (Because, let›s be honest, if you wanted to really reduce your carbon footprint, the answer would be to buy a cheap, tiny electric car, or ride a motorcycle-or a bike.)

Still, the automakers are on to some-thing real, she adds, that’s not going away. Young drivers are going to care about sustainable and ethical transpor-tation in the next decade-more than any buying group ever has, especially when it comes to aspirational brands.

“If you look at millennials or the younger generation, there does seem to be more thoughtfulness about what kind of mark you leave on the planet-more so than a decade ago,” Brinley says. “As we move forward in the luxury landscape, for this type of buyer, having one in your garage will be crucial.” For automakers, at least, it’ll take more than luck to get them there.

When marketing luxury vehicles, electric is no longer a bad word

WASHINGTON POST

This summer has had a lot of news about electric vehicles. Tesla announced that it plans to deliver its first mass-market car to customers.

Volvo said it will only sell electric and hybrid cars in 2019, and last month, Nissan›s Global Director of EV, Kazuo Yajima, said that the next Leaf will have a range of over 200 miles. As efforts ramp up to get more electric vehicles in front of consumers, here are some things to keep in mind when consid-ering such a purchase:

BATTERY LIFE

Batteries in electric vehicles differ from those in gas-powered cars. Electric cars require a more expensive kind of battery, which is what

contributes to the high price of most models, said Frederic Lambert, the editor in chief of the website Electrek. The batteries are lithium-ion based and designed to give power over sustained periods, while batteries in gas-powered vehicles are lead-acid based and mainly

are used to start the conventional gas engine.

Most electric cars come with an extended warranty that covers the car battery up to its first 100,000 miles, said Brian Mooney, an auto analyst and executive editor at Autotrader, which

is similar to gas cars depending on the model. Since most electric cars have yet to have their warranties expire, car companies have handled the majority of battery replacements, Lambert said.

RANGE

Depending upon the mileage, how fast a car is going and other factors, a non-electric car can get well over 350 miles on a full tank of gas, according to consumer finance website Bankrate. The range for electric vehicles vary model to model, with the Chevy Bolt advertised to go 238 miles on a full charge, which is considered high for electric cars. The Nissan Leaf has a range of 107 miles, while the Tesla Model S has a range between 210 to 315.

The more miles a car can go on one charge, the higher its price will be, Mooney said. But not everyone needs an electric car that has a range like the

Bolt, if they›re only going to use it for a 10-mile commute to work every day. Consumers should consider how they will use the car and the average number of miles they›ll be putting on it before purchasing an electric car, Mooney said. If they›re not traveling far, they can look at the cheaper models rather than overpay for a more expensive one.

CHARGE TIME

How fast an electric car can charge its battery really depends upon the strength of the outlet it›s plugged into and the kind of charger used. One can recharge half the battery in half an hour when it›s plugged into a supercharger, which is unique to Tesla cars only. Cars plugged into a basic wall outlet can take up to 12 hours to charge depending on the wattage, but customers have the option to buy a wall connector that cuts the time by five to six hours, Lambert said.

What consumers should consider when buying an electric car

Re m e m b e r t h e "Friends" episode in which Joey dons a Porsche jacket and fanny pack, holds a

Porsche keychain and stands on the street near a pile of card-board boxes shaped like a Porsche 911 underneath a cold-weather cover? The charming-but light-in-the-wallet-Joey uses the tableau to pick up women under the pretense of owning a cool car. The kicker to the scene is that, as Joey tells his friends, "Only an idiot would wear this stuff if he didn't own the car."

At the time, that scenario wasn't far off. In the 1990s, most of the produce hawked from car brands was cheaply made and tacky. Years ago, the flimsiest pair of headphones I ever used were given to me by Lamborghini; any normal human, not to mention someone with a sliver of fashion sense, would balk at wearing the screaming red polyester polo shirts produced en masse from Ferrari.

Things have changed. In fact, several carmakers are producing some of the best-designed, most functional-and yes, even coolest-watches, sunglasses, and leather goods on the market today. As well they should-at some com-panies, the cars and the acces-sories originated virtually hand-in-hand.

Ferdinand Porsche created the 911 and, after the family decided to pull out of the car company's operational man-agement in 1972, founded Porsche Design, the company that creates and markets all the accessories.

"Translating the puristic and functional design philosophy from the sports car into exclusive products beyond the realm of the automobile was successfully exe-cuted by F. A. Porsche and his team," says Roland Heiler, the managing director of Porsche Design. "The ingredients are still the same today: innovation, high quality, timeless design, and authentic materials."

Seventy years farther on in the car business and 46 in the accessories industry, Porsche "would be incomplete" without the watches, sunglasses, and many other items produced under the Porsche Design brand, Heiler says.

That's quite a reputation to live up to. So far, so good. Here are some of the best items on sale from Porsche and a few other brands you'll recognize.

Porsche Design Sunglasses, $475: These are the iconic pair that Yoko Ono made famous many times over. The ones sold here are a reproduction of the

model from 1979. They are made out of titanium and polycar-bonate and come with a Porsche-branded carrying pouch. They’re a strong statement, so proceed with caution. When done right, they look killer.

Porsche Design Chronograph, $5,100: This Chronotimer Series 1 in Polish Black resembles the original designs from Porsche Design in the 1970s-in fact, it’s based off the first run of watches Porsche made. The timepiece comes in sapphire crystal dial cover with a sapphire case back, a polished titanium case, and black titanium, carbide-coated bracelet. Water-resistant, it’s made in Switzerland.

Early issues cost half what new ones do today. Deadstock vintage ones go for closer to $10,000. Expect these to appre-ciate similarly.

Porsche Design Luggage, $2,145:

These bags are sleek, func-tional, and low-key, the way a good 911 should be. The locking set comes with ergonomic alu-minum grips and lightweight side bars, four independently rotating wheels, and two large, main compartments with a strong mesh divider.

Ferrari Scarf, $160:Here’s a low-key piece that

is distinctly Ferrari without yelling about it. The soft jacquard knit scarf features the famous Ferrari shield repeated in a big pattern above a small fringed edge. True to form, it’s made in Italy. Consider it a necessary addition for those drop-top drives in early spring.

Ferrari Umbrella, $135It’s a little expensive, but this

black umbrella is probably the most subdued item Ferrari makes. It comes with a rubberized grip, sturdy aluminum structure, and a carbon-fiber effect on the outside canvas that helps to block UV rays. Keep it in the trunk; you’ll be glad

you did.Scuderia Ferrari x Puma

Shoes, $115Most car-branded shoes are

not cool. It’s better to drive in sneakers or loafers, anyway. But these shoes, made from brick-red cowhide, are cute and don’t scream for attention. They come with a thick, padded tongue and sock liner, with reinforced heel and toe. Wear them in the car and out.

Bentley Fountain Pen, $833For the pen collector who

has everything (they do exist), Bentley makes an unexpected gift. This one, by the 102-year-old Italian brand Tibaldi, has an 18-carat solid gold nib and Tibaldi’s famously smooth ink flow. Call it perfect for updating the maintenance ledger on the Mulsanne. It comes in “Silver Tempest,” “St. James Red,” “Sil-verlake Blue,” and “Beluga.”

Bentley Driving Gloves, $133

These refreshingly minimal gloves are for ladies, though Bentley makes soft, supple ones for men, too. They have a subtle design, with a keyhole back, per-forated fingers, and a Bentley B stud closure that resembles the wheel centers on the Continental coupe, among other Bentley cars. They come in beluga (black) or tan and beluga.

Bentley Racing Bag, $833Porsche makes cool carry-

on luggage shells for when you’re getting on a flight, but this heritage-style Bentley duffel is perfect to throw in the car for a weekend trip. It’s based on the famous “Bentley boys” racing team from the 1920s and ‘30s and is made from sturdy leather in Bentley racing green. Interior side compartments are included.

Naim for Bentley Bluetooth Speaker $1,687

Naim is a 44-year-old, high-end audio manufacturer based in Wiltshire, England, a perfect

complement to Bentley’s her-itage. The 450-watt speaker con-nects to and streams any music source. It has a rotary control that includes Bentley’s signature knurling effect, plus an alu-minum body and detailing that looks like Bentley’s cabin grilles.

Bentley Home Ambassador Sideboard, pricing on request

These are respected pieces in their own right, having debuted at the prestigious Maison & Objet Fair in Paris last year. An initial line was manu-factured in collaboration with Luxury Living Group, one of Europe’s leading furniture makers; following sales success, esteemed architect Carlo Colombo and Daniele Cec-comori, Bentley’s head of product design, expanded the line. The suite of furniture available includes a bed, sofas, and armchairs. The “Ambas-sador” sideboard is especially handsome, with modern archi-tectural themes done in steel gun-metal structure, lava-colored leather, and briar root or ebony macassar veneer.

Rolls-Royce Picnic Hamper, pricing on requestPossibly the most primo picnic

basket available, the teak hamper carries lead-crystal glasses, Wedgwood crockery, and handmade stainless-steel cutlery. It’s trimmed in saddle leather and

polished aluminum. Fine plates, pots, and bowls come with service for four.

BMW x Montblanc Fountain Pen, $780

German and Swiss engi-neering combined here for some-thing special: The Montblanc x BMW Meisterstück fountain pen is hand-made, with a 14-carat gold nib and rhodium-plated inlay in the black-resin body. Three platinum rings line the cap, with a platinum-plated clip of the same stately elegance as a 7-Series sedan. It comes in various shades of blue, black, purple, gray, brown, yellow, and red.

Land Rover Heritage Leather Jacket, $575

While you’re still debating whether Belstaff or Barbour is better, here’s something to hold your attention. The soft-leather of Land Rover’s heritage field jacket has a logo-embossed front pocket, sleeve patches, side adjusters in the back, and checkered palm lining. It’s subtle enough that no one will guess it’s made by a car company, just that you’ve had it for a long time. That’s a good thing.

Mercedes-Benz AMG Ciga-rette Racing Boat, $2m

Mercedes has long partnered with Miami-based Cigarette Racing to make some of the world’s fastest water vehicles. This one is the latest: It has 3,100

total horsepower and can hit a top speed of 140 miles per hour. The look and color scheme of the boat is based on the Mercedes-AMG Project One hybrid supercar developed from Formula 1; it’s the fastest, most advanced boat Mercedes-AMG and Cigarette Racing Team LLC have produced in their 11-year partnership. Only six will be made this year.

Tag Heuer x Aston Martin, $1,560

Recently, in Geneva, Tag Heuer announced it’ll be the exclusive watch partner with Aston Martin. What this means for you is that the two brands will develop a collection of watches “encompassing all aspects of motor racing including the World Endurance Championship series,” according to Aston Martin. One standout is the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Aston Martin Racing chronograph, a 43-mil-limeter quartz chronograph made in steel, with a notched bezel. It has a black dial with lime-green indexes and a winged Aston Martin Racing logo. The leather strap has top stitching that reflects the livery of the Aston Martin Racing Team.

Bugatti Bicycle, $39,000This bike caused quite a

splash when it debuted last year, and for good reason. It weighs only 10 pounds: The frame, fork, rims, handlebar, seat, seat post, crank, and brake are made of reinforced carbon fiber. Plus, it’s exclusive. Only 667 of them will be made at company head-quarters in Germany. There are a few caveats, though. The bike is so special and stiff that the company recommends that you not ride it on public roads (track riding only). And if you have the ample means to cover the cost, expect a wait time. Each example will be fitted to the exact sizing and specifications of the owner via an extensive fitting process.

Lamborghini T-Shirt, $93The Lamborghini Countach

is the most iconic vehicle ever to come out of Sant’Agata Bolognese. The retro-cool T-shirt is 100 percent cotton. I’ll make this very simple: If you’re female and you wear it, you’ll get plenty of attention.

BLOOMBERG

Picture this: You’re driving home from work, contem-plating what to make for dinner, and as you idle at a red light near your neighborhood

pizzeria, an ad offering $5 off a pep-peroni pie pops up on your dashboard screen. Are you annoyed that your car›s trying to sell you something, or pleas-antly persuaded? Telenav Inc, a company developing in-car advertising software, is betting you won’t mind much. Car companies-looking to earn some extra money-hope so, too.

Automakers have been installing wireless connections in vehicles and col-lecting data for decades. But the sheer volume of software and sensors in new vehicles, combined with artificial intel-ligence that can sift through data at ever-quickening speeds, means new services and revenue streams are quickly emerging. The big question for automakers now is whether they can profit off all the driver data they’re capable of collecting without alienating consumers or risking backlash.

“Carmakers recognise they’re fighting a war over customer data,” said Roger Lanctot, who works with auto-makers on data monetization as a con-sultant for Strategy Analytics.

Carmakers’ ultimate objective, Lanctot said, is to build a database of consumer preferences that could be aggregated and sold to outside vendors for marketing purposes, much like Google and Facebook do today.

Auto executives emphasize that data-crunching will allow them to build a better driving experience-enabling cars to predict flat tyres, find a parking space or charging station, or alert city managers to dangerous intersections where there are frequent accidents. Data collection could even help shield drivers

from crime, Ford’s chief executive officer said at the CES technology trade show. “If a robber got in the car and took off, would you want us to know where that robber went to catch him?” Jim Hackett asked the audience during a keynote in Las Vegas. “Are you willing to trade that?” It was hardly a hypo-thetical question. Car companies are betting if they offer you the right carrot-discounted car insurance, a coupon at the gas pump-you’ll share your data without blinking, just as you do when you post on Facebook or type a query into a Google search.

“The benefit there is hopefully an improved relationship, so we know you better, we understand you better and we’re able to deliver better services to

you,” Don Butler, Ford’s executive director for connected vehicles and services, said in in Las Vegas. The potential to share data — both ano-nymized and personalized — with third parties represents the biggest opportunity, Butler said. Like most auto executives, he’s quick to point out that customers will have the choice to opt in to services that require sharing information, such as their location or driving habits.

Of course, not all drivers may under-stand what privacy rights they’re signing away. A Government Accountability Office report published in July found none of the 13 carmakers in the study that collected data from connected vehicles had easy-to-read privacy notices and most don›t explain data

sharing and use practices.Banks and finance companies are

some of the businesses pondering what they could learn from your driving habits. Banks may want to know if you stopped driving to work. Credit card companies might want to offer you a loan if they know your car broke down.

Telenav, the Silicon Valley company looking to bring pop-up ads to your info-tainment screen, has been testing a “freemium” model borrowed from streaming music services to entice drivers to share their data.

Say you can’t afford fancy features like embedded navigation or the ability to start your car through a mobile app. The original automaker will install them for free, so long as you’re willing to

tolerate the occasional pop-up ad while idling at a red light. Owners of luxury cars won’t have to suffer such indig-nities, since the higher price tag paid likely would have already included an internet connection.

“For the luxury car, it’s their safe haven, it’s their quiet time,” said Ky Tang, director of business development at Telenav. Tang says his research shows “strong receptivity” among low-end and middle-tier vehicle owners to look at ads in exchange for free services in the car. “This is a business model that has been proven many times over on web and mobile,” he said.

The pop-up car ads could generate an average of $30 annually per vehicle, to be split between Telenav and the automaker. He declined to say whether anyone has signed up for the software, which was just unveiled at CES, but added Telenav is in “deep discussions” with several manufacturers. Because of the long production cycles of the industry, it’ll be about three years before the ads will show up in new models.

The kinds of car-data tools in play today are much smaller scale. General Motors, which pioneered the connected car with its OnStar concierge service, sent a software update to million of vehicles in December, introducing an e-commerce system that lets drivers order coffee or make restaurant reser-vations while driving-to the chagrin of some safety advocates. Longer term, GM may look to monetize traffic and parking data it›ll collect as its self-driving cars get on the road next year.

More automakers will soon be launching e-commerce features similar to GM’s, according to Xevo, the software company that helps power Marketplace. Bringing Starbucks or Dunkin’ Donuts into your car lets manufacturers earn back some of the money they spend on telematics and forms a direct relationship with drivers.

The car of the future will sell your data
