Just over 300 store cattle saw a top call of £1300 for an outstanding steer

from Messrs N & B Trewin of Bideford

559 LAMBS

A nice entry of lambs saw a top call of £84.50 for a pen of heavies in from Messrs D & E James of Higher Stowford, closely

followed by the pick of a run of 48 from Graham Hookway of

St Giles at £82.20. Premium on the day was set at 178p/kg for

Messrs Smallridge of Parkham Ash. 276 Medium weight lambs

39 – 45kgs topped at £78 from Ken Hill and 262 heavies 46 –

52kgs topped at £84.50 and averaged £77.10. The overall

average stood at 166.43p/kg just 2p/kg down on last week.

131 DRAFT EWES & RAMS

A very short entry of cull ewes saw a top call of £86.50 on behalf of Mr J Shipton of Week St Mary with others

from Messrs Barriball of North Petherwin at £84.50. Messrs CHS Enterprises of Dolton sold their line up of

Mule types at £70 with others at £69. Overall average stood at £59.47.

80 STORE LAMBS

Numbers were very tight with no real stars on offer. Top call of the day was £58 given for lambs in from Messrs

WL Braund of Whitstone who sold smaller lambs at £54 and £50.

What a difference a week makes with

another good entry of calves and the ring

packed full of potential buyers the trade

was well up on previous weeks.

The top price was £555 for a 8 week old

British Blue x bull sold by Messrs WS Jose

& Son from North Tamerton who also

sold another for £500 with their best 4

week old British Blue x heifer making £355. Mr AA Parsons from Congdon

Shop saw his best Limousin x bull sell for £500 and a good run of calves from

Messrs TN & M Morrow from Ladock saw their best British Blue x bull sell

for £495 and also selling Limousin x bulls at £490, £480, £470 and £455 with

their best Limousin x heifer achieving £345. Messrs GF, JE & LJ Duke from

Werrington sold a smart young British Blue x bull for £438 and further young

British Blue x bulls to £410 for Messrs R & S Home from East Putford. Plenty

of other vendors marketing Continental bulls around £380 to £400.

Friesian bulls to a top of £150 for Messrs JH Heal & Son from Dolton and a

nice run from Mr A Horn from Lake Sourton to £140. Heifers peaked at

£360 for a smart young Limousin x from Mr DE Olde, Morwenstow with

other good young Limousin x heifers to £338 on behalf of Messrs NC & RM

Skinner from Beaworthy. Young Charolais x heifers to £325 for Mr D Rees

– Douse from Exbourne with further British Blue x heifers to £320 for

Messrs WF Parsons & Son from Pyworthy.

A superb trade for several quality consignments of cattle this week, forward stores saw many over £1000 with a top of £1300 for a superb Limousin 24 months old from Messrs N & B Trewin, Westcott, Bideford with their

10 steers averaging £1053 and heifers averaging £1037. Younger 17 month old single suckled Simmental and

Charolais steers from Messrs RA & DT Cleave, Kennerland, Woolsery averaged £1040 topping at £1090 for

four Charolais. Younger single suckled purebred Limousin heifers 16 months old from Mr P Endacott, Halwill

sold well at £930. Single suckled purebred Limousin steers from Mr G May, Port Isaac reached £815.

Young Dairy x Continentals 8 – 12 months old saw a flying trade up £50 - £70, many bunches of steers £650 -

£700, heifers £500 + and many more could have been sold. Stronger Holsteins saw a slight improvement 15 –

17 month old types nearer £600, young 12 month old types £350 - £400. Natives again saw a very strong trade

16 – 18 month old Aberdeen Angus steers topping at £1060 from Mr S Gubbin, Boyton.

A dispersal of well bred pedigree Devons from Mrs H Chapman, Halwill saw a good trade topping at £1040

for a 5 year old Devon cow with a 3 month old heifer calf at foot with others to £1000. Shorthorn cows to

This week’s winner of the Lark Plant award for top price store cattle goes to Messrs N & B Trewin, Westacott, Abbotsham,

Bideford for a superb Limousin steer reaching £1300.

Another strong trade, larger framed cows with condition topped at £870 for a Holstein from Mr JC Palmer,

Chulmleigh with others from the same farm to £780. Smaller crossbred cows from Mr S Urquhart, Brendon to £450 and more required.

Cows in short supply, top being 121p/kg for a 790 kilo Holstein from Mr S Chudleigh, St Stephens realising

£955. Beef cows topped at 133p/kg for a 660 kilo cow from Mr S Gubbin, Boyton. Mature bulls topped at

103p/kg 1036 kilos realising £1067.

Good cattle saw a good trade, a consignment of well finished Aberdeen Angus’s from Mr K Thorne, Norton

realised 176p/kg for both a 630 kilo Aberdeen Angus heifer over 30 months old and a handyweight 612 kilo

Aberdeen Angus steer. Several unfinished Natives this week sold from 140p/kg – 145p/kg.
